I think we ought to stay together.

I think I'll make my living as the group's merchant or something.

G-Tech, are you going to keep track of inventory, or are we using the typical "infinite merchant inventory' thing?

I want to separate as much as possible. I'll may visit farholme from time to time but I'm otherwise curious as to what G-tech's world has to offer.

In terms of mad science.

I was under the impression we'd mostly be going our seperate ways and getting to it, NPCs abound. Either way, my little log cabin settlement will rise! Perhaps only a metre or two, but still, it counts!

The Grim Reaper wrote:Name: Abu Grimm
Description: Abu is uncharacteristically dark-skinned, despite having ultimately typical characteristics of his peers from the old world. His black hair is tangled and curly, although it is surprisingly easy to shape - making for a frame to his face that becomes markedly different from hour to hour, with sweat and humidity. He is short, and stout, with a friendly stature and a calm, peacible demeanour. Despite this, his general posture has all the alertness and dogged determination of an army officer, although not its discipline or technical prowess.
Biography: Grimm, who prefers his last name, is something of a storyteller. It was a mere twenty-seven, twenty-eight years ago that his mop of black hair first emerged onto the world, leaving a mark that would never quite be extinguished. There was no silver spoon in his mouth. While his father's income was immense, and reputable, his trade as a musician meant that much of his earnings went to the day-to-day needs of a travelling family, and to various private tutors across the continents. His mother was a free spirit at heart, a revolutionary years before her time who could stir the hearts of even the most stoic men around her to the plight of those lesser than they, all from the relative safety of the ever-changing hearths at which the family took dinner.

It was for this reason that his parents were cut down where they stood, so many years ago - when he was a young teenager. It was merely by a stroke of luck that he was hidden away in a cupboard, to be found by an adoring fan of the family. The only thing he inherited from his parents was a deep interest in the endurance and the creativity of the human spirit. He made his way through odd-jobs, running messages and secretarial work for townships and cities. For a time, he worked as a patent clerk, putting to bear his very substantial, broad understanding of the world, having studied for mere twinklings of a moment with some of the greatest professionals on the continent in succession. He stood for office. He won. He had a track record defined by both fortune and virtue, a man Machiavelli would have admired and envied.

And then he was struck from office, by an estranged political rival of his mother. A man driven by honour, an honour that demanded the subjugation of his rivals. A man who could bring to bear an army which easily persuaded Grimm's political supporters to break ranks for this man. A man who would not rest until Grimm was totally erased from the continent.

As luck would have it, they came to a compromise. As fate would have it, Grimm's supporters came through. If ingenuity has anything to do with it, Grimm shall come out stronger in this New World.
Skills: Silver Tongue, Inventor, Lucky

Interesting history. Happy to have you Grim.

Olthenia wrote:Name: Guncer Pregorius

Description: Guncer is a short, stocky fellow with broad, comely features and thick, brown whiskers.

Biography: Born to humble mushroom farmers out by the Herring Isles, Guncer's life was destined for mediocrity. At any rate, at least it taught him how to tend crops. His family's involvement with the attempt to unionize the local mushroom pickers soon brought Guncer at odds with the powers that be, however. On the dark, mist-haunted Herring Isles, that meant none other than the powerful Fungal Guild. Guncer found he had a glib tongue and an articulate mind, and when Guildsmen attempted to sabotage their struggle it was Guncer who became his fellows' voice for better wages. Unfortunately, it took more than a loud voice and a clenched fist to pluck the Guild from power. In the end, after a summer of veiled threats and a lot of shouting, the young Pregorius saw his nascent union outlawed. Doors closed in his face now, and his neighbors turned their backs on him for fear of Guild reprisals. To that end, Guncer decided, if a man desired freedom he'd have to find it for himself - which was why he took hire with a ship bound for the Wild Lands.

Skills: Skilled Agrarian, Silver Tongue, Martial Prowess

I find the concept of a guild amusing, he'll build the first commune, I would reckon. Welcome Olth.

The Flame Dawn wrote:Name: Nuban Rao
Description: Nuban is a tan skinned man with short, messy, black hair. He often wears a sugegasa (The Japanese Term for a Paddy Hat), as well as some simple light clothing in addition to a pair of hide boots.
Biography: Nuban is a peasant farmer hailing from the Eastern Kingdoms who had heard stories about the Wild Lands. He was fascinated by stories about how bizarre the lands were compared to the rest of the world, which still seemed like a mystery to him. After a fire devastated the majority of his crops and his home, he was left with no where to go. Instead of becoming a beggar and wait for his life to run out he decided to sell everything besides some clothes, his hat, and one of his goats that survived the fire, and hire a ship to take him to the famed Wild Lands. He knew that he would either succeed and become a famous settler or die trying, which he thought would be a better fate than becoming a common beggar.
Skills: Enduring, Pastoral (Goat), Skilled Agrarian

I'm glad somebody brought a goat, excellent. Also accepted.

Cartagine wrote:Name: Asger
Description: Asger is a tall and muscular man, most recognisable for his angry look and the burn scars that run through it. He has long blond hair and an almost equally long blond beard decorated with braids. He wears a brown shirt with a brown pants and a pair of old leather boots. Alongside that he also wears a fur cloak, the last item he has from his previous life.
Biography: Asger grew up in one of the poor regions of the Empire though he was luckly enough to grow up on a farm. His parents proved food for the large city about a day and a half ride from their farm, it was alot of work to maintain the farm for a sad pay but in the end they always had food. Most of his childhood Asger helped his parents on the field together with his younger sister, he learned the basics of farming from his father and the basics of cooking from his mother in those years.

Once he became a teenager he joined his father to bring their crops to the city. The city was something he would never get used to, so many people and more importantly so many rude people as he would describe them. Upon a day though a man walked up to him, a man in fancy clothing with expensive jewelry on his hands and around his neck. The man was searching for strong looking people that could protect him and he asked Asger wether he would be interested as Asger was a tall and broad man. The pay was good and after a chat with his father about it Asger agreed to the job.

Asger recieved training from the cities garrison and it was there that he learned more about the man he worked for. It appeared that the man became rich by collecting taxes, a job Asger always saw as stealing from the poor. As the years passed by though he learned that even rich people had to pay taxes and that both rich as poor people complained about it every time. Asger was one of four that made sure nothing happend to the tax collector and in the years that he worked for him it was only once that he had to draw his sword.

At one day Asger's father visited the city again and as always Asger met with him to see how things went at home. This day however his father brought bad news. Asger's sister had been killed not far from the road by bandits, bandits who still roamed the area.
Asger told what happend later that day while collecting taxes again and the tax collector insisted on him returning home as he considered such matters far more important than collecting taxes, and so the very next day Asger left the city to return home. Upon his arrival he heard that the bandits had already been killed by the guards who had started a searchparty the night before.

Asger visited many people that hadn't seen him in years including a woman with who he grew up together. She still lived at home, still helping her mother to take care of the guards that where stationed in the town. It didn't took long for Asger to fall in love with her and after spending almonst all week together Asger asked permission to her mother so he could marry her.
His marriage was by far the happiest day of his life as all people from the town, the tax collector and other people he knew from the city showed up. The tax collector even offered Asger a house in the city as a gift to him and his now wife. Asger didn't hesitate and accepted the offer, from which point his life become a standard one again, collecting taxes and taking care of his wife.

Years passed by until Asger's mother died, and shortly after his father aswell. Asger inherited the land that was owned by by them and wasn't sure on what to do with it. After talking about it to his wife and the tax collector, who by now planned to retire within the coming years, he moved back to his old home and became a farmer himself. Life was quiet and peacefull out here, a thing Asger still enjoyed even though he missed the city from time to time. Then three winters after the couple moved to the farm Asger's wife got pregnant at last and life looked promising. To all good things come an end eventually and even for Asger life could be perfect. During a stormy night Asger was out in the field trying to collect what he could collect before the storm would destroy his crops when the thunder reached his house. Asger started to rush himself towards the house of which the roof had collapsed. His wife was asleep when it happend and a large beam had fallen upon her legs. Asger quickly ran off to call for help but as he returned the remains of his house hat caught fire, most likely duo to the roof falling almost ontop of the fire that kept the house warm. There was nothing he could do and fellow townmembers held him back as he watched how his wife got burned alive.

For months Asger felt terrible, nightmares kept coming back about that day and he still heard the screams of his wife everytime he sunk into his thoughts. He felt like there was no point in his life anymore and didn't even bother to rebuild his house. As he sat at the grave of his wife he heard two people talking about him and one of them mentioned that Asger needed to start over, to begin a new life. It was at that point when he noticed that that person was right. Asger made sure to go as far away as he possible could to start over in the hope that it would do him some good. He gathered all of his possesions, which wasn't much more than his clothes and a cloak made by his wife, and left for the city. While on his way he considered to dumb the cloak as it reminded him of his wife, but then those memories where positive as he remembered the many days and nights his wife worked on that cloak for him.

Once arrived at the city it didn't took long before he got information about this new world and upon hearing about it Asger was determined to go there, to start a new life with new oppertunities, hopefully a peaceful life, a life he could somewhat enjoy.

Skills: Skilled Agrarian|Enduring|Martial Prowess

An interesting history. Hopefully he can find some solace from his personal demons and a new life in the Wilds. Accepted.

Agriculture supposed to work?

Ah, yes, I knew I had forgotten something. I'll add in a blurb about that, but basically you till the land with a hoe or plow, seed it, then wait. Most crops grow in a certain amount of time.

Harkback Union wrote:Name: D. D. Rotwang
Description: Washed ashore by the sea, Rotwang found himself on this mysterious continent. His memories flicker with knowledge and his mind is engulfed in a mad pursuit of science.

Biography: Rotwang was a young scholar of the empire. He studied geology, botanics and alchemy and spent much of his student life strolling around the countryside in search of materials to mix into his mentor's potions. Meanwhile however, he would also spend time secretly studying ancient texts from millenias before, written in languages alien to most. Rotwang understood none of the words, but there were some interesting drawings about the insides of animals that caught his attention. Most of his colleagues at the time were busy theorizing about methods for turning iron into gold and searching for the elixir of youth with which man could become immortal, their best method to do that was apparently to test all possible combinations of materials on prisoners.

Rotwang had other plans. As soon as he got his degree, he begun investigating the mysterious powers of nature and life, he used oddly shaped glassware to enlarge and shrink objects for the human eye and used them to study the night skies, he chopped up plants, and then he chopped up animal and human corpses to study what's inside, amplifying his findings with the use of the glassware. He also begun designing ludicrous machines with which to conduct his nefarious experiments on the dead. Contemporary scholars were quick to denounce Rotwang for his wicked ways and the imperial court was soon to follow. Rotwang was ordered to stop his activities and report to the Imperial academy for peer-review of his work, but Rotwang refused, knowing that he would probably be denied funds, banned from all scholarly work or worse. Facing loss of his livelihood, Rotwang begun work on his grand experiment. He believed that demonstrating the experiment to his fellow scholars would allow him to regain his prestige and the trust of the court, but he was running out of time.

Soldiers were already on the way towards Rotwang's laboratory when he made the finishing touches to his machine. When the soldiers banged on his door with the arrest warrant, Rotwang turned on the machines. "Its now or never..."

But the machine didn't work as intended. So much so not that the sparks it spewed set fire to the containers of hazardous chemicals that were part of the machine. Rotwang Opened his window and screamed "RUN!" to the people outside the street. The maddening noises of the bending metal, the bright sparks and the purple-colored smoke pouring out of every opening of the laboratory even convinced the soldiers to back off. Rotwang barely had enough time to grab his trusty coat and some of his most important items. Mere seconds after he left through the back door, his laboratory and with it, his house, exploded. The Explosion could be seen, heard and felt miles away. The tremor shook the streets, and panic broke out in the neighborhood. Crowds around the city stood amazed by the distant roar and the sight of the massive cloud of smoke. Some scholars at the academy's tower also noticed the explosion. - "Hah, He had it coming." - One robed man noted.

The initial confusion allowed Rotwang to escape unnoticed. To his luck, the imperial authorities believed him to be dead, but there were many who could still recognize him, so He decided that its best to leave for the new world. With what little he had in his pockets, he managed to get a ticket for a ship that left that very night, but now he had only a few knaves left in his pockets for his life after, whatever it would be like...

But Rotwang's ship would get into a terrible storm Just mere hours before arriving at Farholme. Rotwang does not remember what really happened, if the ship sank or if only he fell overboard, but he survived and that's all what's important.

Skills: Botanics (Or whatever that agricultural skill is called), Prospecting, Inventor.

Hmm, I'll say he fell overboard on the journey not far from the city. You will have it slightly rough at first though, as the point of everyone starting in Farholme was that you could buy goods for your endeavors there. At any rate, good, and accepted.

Not exactly- I will be tracking the inventory of the NPC merchants in Farholme, but they will have plentiful supplies. And since they'll be making profits, they'll be replenishing their stocks regularly from across the ocean, and allow players to place orders for particular goods if so desired.

Actually, there will only be eight NPCs to begin with, five guards of Farholme and three NPC miners there. More people will come to the New World over time, however, and be available to be recruited for your various enterprises, or if left alone go build their own settlements and whatnot.

Well originally there's only the one merchant, the Captain of the Garrison of Farholme. And most of the time the prices he buys and sells for aren't the same, nor the items. He'd be happy to sell you dried meat for, say, three knaves, but he'll only buy it if you're selling for less than that, around a knave, as a rule of thumb. So no, you won't make money using Silver Tongue unless you resell elsewhere or to your fellow players, but you will find your money goes farther than it would otherwise.

Quite so- they're essentially stable NPCs to provide a flow of money to the settlement so it can steadily upgrade itself over time, and continue importing supplies despite consuming supplies itself. If you try to forge a relationship with one of the miners over several months you might be able to lure him away, but in general terms they're very content fellows.

Fair enough.

I was considering setting up in the settlement if at all possible, just for a short period. My character isn't anywhere near as hardy as some of the others, but I was hoping that good fortune and a good smile could win me an honest job in urban planning or accountancy and human resources management. Perhaps television advertising.

Either way, I was banking on spending some time making friends with the NPCs.

What are the odds we might find a lone woman trying to carve a life out for herself. I don't mind sharing some of my food if she can pull her own weight.

If you mean "find" as in discover wandering the wilderness, essentially nonexistent. The Wild Lands aren't going to be inhabited, your characters being more or less the first colonists. If you mean "find" as in, "recruit once more settlers begin arriving", certainly. Use an EP, make an inn, spend money to send advertisements back to the old world. Whatever you like, really, as long as you run it by me first.

Quite reasonable. I'm sure if you talk to the guards they might find work for you- any fledgling settlement needs men to go fell trees, or fish, or in the case of Farholme extract silver from the mines. I'm expecting most folks to stay somewhat nearby at least initially, as wandering off by yourself immediately into the dangerous regions will just have you end up starving.

Mkay, to clarify, the reason y'all start with several Enhancement Points is to allow immediate modification of the RP setting to account for things I didn't have the time to write up but which you might wish for. Feel free to use them at any time, and remember, they can also be converted to cash.

With that out of the way, we have at least enough people to start the IC. So I may start looking into that in a while.

G-tech, may I exchange my 5 starting money for a tiny damaged boat (2 person max) and some supplies that fell overboard?

What supplies are you thinking of?

I am. Didn't I mention that? But if you want to create a truly Eastern kingdom, you'll need some proper Himalayan yak, not those stupid weakling goats.
