In the city of Ardwind, there is only one certainty - death. Nothing is surprising anymore; not with the constant bickering of nobles, and the wars outside of the city. Not with the Inquisition forces threatening to break the very will of the city-folk, all in the name of their crusade against rogue magic. Drunkenness and debauchery run rampant in the city taverns, and the elves in the Narrows threaten the delicate balance of power. Nothing is surprising, with such trouble all around. In a city of troubles, forever locked in trial and tribulation, an unforeseen threat is rising.
The madness threatens to consume all.
Will you survive, or will you fall?


Madness and the Inquisitor:

Set in the city of Ardwind, as well as the surrounding Red Marches, on the continent of Varrinfal, this RP will allow RP'ers to control up to three characters, all trying to make their way in a world of warring factions, magic, and trials. This RP is very much open-world, and your own interactions with other characters will dictate the way that your character makes his/her way in Ardwind. You will start out as either a member of one of the factions, or as an unaffiliated character, but the royal family and the Inquisitor are not playable, due to the fact that the storyline depends on these characters making decisions that I must dictate. Other than the NPC Royals, and the NPC Inquisitor, anything is possible.

The Inquisition

The Inquisition was formed by the leaders of the former Templar Order, who understood the need to combat rogue magic. The Magistral Alliance, made up of mages united against the throne of High Varrinfal, threatened to destroy the entire world, using their knowledge of the magical realm to do so. The Templar Order became the Inquisition in order to stop the rebellious mages from destroying the world, whilst also ensuring that the world did not turn on the mages. They brought peace to Varrinfal and to Ardwind, but that peace has now ended. The Inquisition is led by Arron Lavellan, a former knight-turned holy warrior. They make their base in the keep of Caer Maron, just outside of the city of Ardwind.

Ardwind is a city of great renown, seeming to be a beacon of hope in the difficult region of the Red Marches. Ardwind survived three blights, which were times of severe plague and war which saw many people killed. In Ardwind, all three of the main races are represented. As in most regions of Varrinfal, humankind reigns over the city in many ways. The Royal Family, also known as House Ruret, makes sure to keep the noble lords of the city at bay, despite the strife within the family itself. The head of House Ruret, Juliana Ruret, is young and inexperienced, which makes her a target for the noble lords who hope to gain power. As well as the strife amongst the human leadership of Ardwind, there are elves living within the city, too. In the Narrows, elves from around the Red Marches, as well as from the Barrens, reside. The elves, magically inclined, as well as far more cunning and agile than the average human, pose a threat to the humans, should they rebel. The dwarves, content in their lodgings, operate for themselves and by their own code of honour. They are primarily employed in risky business, and they are known as very trustworthy folk.

The most pressing threat in the minds of the royals, as well as the Inquisitor, is the Madness. For several months, various individuals in the city have become ill from a plague known as the Madness. More will be revealed as the RP progresses.

The Application is relatively simple, but I will clarify some things. Firstly, please remove all things in parentheses. Secondly, I know that there is an application for a noble house. This is very simple: you may create your own noble house, which will mean that your characters affiliated with that house will be of nobility. This is restricted, however, as I will not allow anybody to begin the RP as a house more powerful than House Ruret, the royal house. This may change, depending on your actions within the RP.

A character with high martial ability is quite able in battle, whereas a character with low martial ability is severely lacking in combat skill, and must seek training in order to fight effectively.)
[b]Stewardship[/b]: 1-20 (This is a measure of organisational skills and diplomacy. A character with high stewardship ability is able to negotiate well, and will fit in amongst politics rather than in the realm of warfare. A character with low stewardship ability is not quite fit for a diplomatic setting.)
[b]Holiness[/b]: 1-20 (This is a measure of how faithful your character is to their religion. This should be quite obvious.)
[b]Loyalty[/b]: 1-20 (This is a measure of how loyal your character is to a faction, or how loyal your character is willing to be. A character with high loyalty can be expected to remain with a faction once pledged, but a player with low loyalty will be apt to leave a faction once they are no longer benefitted.)
[b]Renown[/b]: 1-20 (This is a measure of how well-known your character is. A character with high renown is known and/or feared, and a character with low renown must work to become known.)


Important Information:

In Varrinfal, there are many beasts that might be found in an average forest, such as deer, bears, wolves, and wildcats. The laws of nature apply to these creatures: To attack a bear unarmed, is to die. To attack a wolf unarmed, is to die. Hunting is acceptable, and likely encouraged for many people. This section is dedicated not to those ordinary animals, but instead to the animals of a more unordinary nature.




The Varg

The Varg is a nasty beast indeed, with razor sharp teeth and powerful jaws. They resemble hyenas, however they are the size of a standard horse. They are extremely aggressive, and often hunt in solitude, as they are territorial about their kills. They will attack anything, whether it be a bear, or a wayward human.

The Feryn

A feryn is a medium-sized animal slightly resembling a dragon. They are covered in feathers, rather than scales, and most often live in the cold and stormy Iron Mountains. They occasionally venture into the forests of the Red Marches in search of food, which leads them to compete with wolves and vargs rather often. A feryn will not attack a person outright, but they will defend themselves if threatened.

The Keret

The keret is a form of fox, which lives deep in the forest. They are larger than a typical fox, although they are completely harmless to humans. They feed primarily on rodents, but they are known to occasionally eat carrion. The keret was once revered by the elves of the Red Marches.

The elves of Varrinfal are known for their extreme beauty and lithe figures, as well as their connection to nature spirits. They are naturally inclined to feel the presence of the magical realm, thus making them more skilled as sorcerers than humans. Elves were persecuted for centuries by the Templar Order, as the Templars saw their connection to magic as a threat to justice and peace. Because of this persecution, elves fled the Red Marches, but were brought back to Ardwind as slaves by the original human King, Andras I. Now freed, the elves live primarily in the slums of Ardwind, called the Narrows. There are elves living outside of Ardwind and the Red Marches in a heavily forested mountain region just north of the Red Marches, called the Barrens. It was given the name in order to deter humans from travelling through there, as they would almost certainly be attacked by the elves there. Elves can inter-breed with humans, and half-elves are often treated as second-class citizens.

Blood Magic is a forbidden art, practised by only the bravest of mages. The term, Blood Magic, refers to the ability to harness the power within one's own blood in order to cast powerful spells. Most commonly, blood magic is used to summon powerful beings, most often demons. The essential component of necromancy involves a mastery of blood magic, as blood magic is the only discipline powerful enough to fully reanimate a corpse. Blood mages are killed by the Inquisition if caught practising their art, so do so with great caution.


Rules:

1. I am the OP, and my word is law. I will name a co-op at a later time, and he/she must also be respected.
2. You may have up to three characters, but you must provide an application for each.
3. Noble Houses are just that - noble. This does not mean that you rule over Ardwind. You may strive for more power, but you will not begin the RP with power even rivalling that of the Inquisition. You may rival the royals, though, from the very start.
4. No god-modding. You may not do harm to any player character without consulting that player in advance.
5. Your role in this RP is yours to choose. If you wish to be a farmer in the Red Marches, living peacefully, such is your noble decision. If you choose to be a warrior, fighting against your enemies, this is also fine.
6. The real world does not exist in this RP. You may use the real world as inspiration, but no more.

Thank you for the interest. There are certainly aspects of both Lovecraft and Game of Thrones contributing to my process of making this RP. There is also significant influence from the lore of Dragon Age, and all of the video games related.

In a street fight, it has been said that he can take down 10 knights(no armor, only sword and shield) in a minute, but only through dirty ‘tricks up his sleeve’. A quite formidable brawler, but his unmanly(RL: imagine a jujitsu master throwing sand in your eyes and cutting your wrists and kneecaps with daggers) fighting style has cost him his renown as a fighter. Lost all of his duals because of unfair cheating. Eugene himself considers it ‘bullsh*t’ and thinks that there is ‘no rule in fighting’.
He can usually be found in a bar, enjoying a pint of beer. Sometimes he spends the day helping with calculations of local merchants, playing chess with travelers or writing strange notes. His exploits as a ‘wizard’ is legendary among village residents. One claims that she saw Eugene ‘make metal torches with pieces of lemon’.
Never betrays friends, but he has no friends at the moment. It is quite hard to earn his trust. He and everyone else claims that he has no diplomatic affairs, but his handwriting, surprisingly, resembles that of a very high noble. Speaks with an RP(Received Pronunciation) accent, while speaking his ‘r’s like an Italian.
