A Mercenary Company Roleplaying Adventure

"It was a time for wonders, a time for discovery and adventure. Across stars and planets spanned the Empire of Aelosia, a multiracial nation led by a higher elven caste compromised to the pursuit of happiness and progress engulfed in a plan of expansion during the last two centuries. Aelosian starship fleets prowled the stars, adding new territories into its fold by skillful diplomacy, technological and cultural superiority, and occassional use of force. From their artificial Metropolis, the Aerilaya, the Everqueen Empress surveys her territories through an assembly of the highest oligarchy known as the Noble's Gathering, formed by the aristocracy and nobility of the Empire, famous for the constant plotting and scheming between the different families, trying to extend their power and influence over the others.

Yet, every light cast a shadow. Expansion has led to conflict, and conflict led to weariness. For every system colonized, a new enemy appeared lurking across the void trying to gnaw and erode the Aelosian Conquests. Lesser races grow discontent with rulers that seem to be too far away, or just grow jealous of their autonomy and freedom. Even if only one colony amongst hundreds grow discontent, it saps from the Empire's strength, and every unattended rebellion turns into the seed of further dissent in new planets. Every year, the Empire spands, and even the well oiled Aelosian military forces are starting to become spread too thin to be engaged in all the fighting theaters. Plus, every year less of the potentially immortal elves become willling to serve and risk their eternity lives in low level conflicts for meagre rewards.

Now, the unthinkable has happened. The elves' armed manpower is almost spent, forced to remain in garrison duties, and expansion is lagging to unprecented levels, due to the lower population growing of the long lived race. In an effort to recover numbers, the Aelosian High Command decides to take advantage of the vast coffers at their disposal and hire foreign soldiers to fight its wars on their stead.

The Age of Glory ends, and the Age of Avarice begins..."

OOC INFORMATION:

Welcome to the Scions of Avarice, a warlike, mercenary company oriented RP set in the vast expanse of a Star Empire. The technology level is high, even brushing fantasy levels as well, but even an Ogre wielding a club with a nail or a space hillbilly with a shotgun could become a force to be reckoned with.

The aim of the RP is for the players to form a paramilitary mercenary company that fights for the Aelosian Empire in different missions appointed by their employers, so more likely I'll reserve the spot of the "leader" of sorts, more of a mercenary vaultkeeper that acts as the representative from the employer. As such, there is no deterrent on race or origins, although as you might guess too outlandish propositions might be refused outright.

More likely, your characters will form an elite squad for high profile operations, so take into account that an interesting role might get you approved faster than a more common one. For example, no more than two snipers or marksmen in one squad would be sensitive.

Now let's review the rules:

COMMANDMENTS:
- None of the RP-ing big ones: No Godmodding, Metagaming, Predicting, Etc etc
- Respect your fellow RP-ers, the tone of the story, and the OP.
- Remember that its a fantasy-tinted high technology RP, but mind your power level. If you a psion, for example, you won't be able to lift up MBTs and throw them around first adventure. Think that you are creating the fluff for a level 1 character in a tabletop game of sorts (further on that, because that will be exactly what you will be doing). Take into account that when you design your veteran of one hundred wars that somehow isn't more skilled than a recruit, (and makes himself look stupid). No imba, please.
- Make interesting characters! A big part of that is NO ONE-LINERS OR POOR GRAMMAR. Have at least a paragraph for every post. No need for walls of text, especially during action sequences or conversations, but don't be
- Let your characters have flaws. Additionally, I reserve the right to hijack (due to inactivity) or outright kill off (for extended uncompatibility) characters (with a warning.)
- This RP includes numbers, generated by me and influenced by your application. It will follow a game system and should only used during action sequences as to restrain a bit the success of your actions according to random and your character's skillset, and also means that your character might find death against your wishes if something goes horribly wrong. If you have further questions about this, ask. As I will be the one handling the numbers, you don't need to worry about those in character creation.
- TG me if you have anything you want to ask that hasn't been clarified here.

If you want to know how the story will go, I suggest you read, for example, Gaunt's Ghost series of novels. Or also Sharpe novels, or actually any war time adventuring novels, (as Starship Troopers, for instance). However, remember that you will be thrown in a high tech, future technology environment, even if it has some elements of fantasy.

Just fill the form about the character you want to join, I'll evaluate it and let you know if you are accepted. Unfortunately, I only can handle a certain amount of people, so I'll let you know also when the thread is full, but a waiting list. Additional information on your character, as special traits, pictures for appearance or other things I couldn't think about, is optional, so feel free to add it if you want it.

If you have rped with me in the past, just fill the character form. If you haven't, please try to add a link to any other of your RPs, so I can judge the quality of your writing and play. Also please try to remain constant and active, as after a certain period of inactivity, I could kill your character or make it dissappear from the story in order to carry on. I promise at least two posts a week from my part, if no more, and I expect all participants to have the same availability. Less than one post a week gets you in an awkward position, and two weeks notice without posting gets you the temporal "I'm an NPC now!" rule that can quickly evolve into the "I got fragged by lost bullets!" rule. You can for sure take vacations, (giving the control over your character to me, temporarily in a "follower mode"). Other rping details, story details, and any other kind of details pending can be discussed in this thread before I create the IC one.

Background: A former officer on the Aelosian Navy, Sorshasta seemed to have been freed from service on mysterious and better not talk upon reasons. Using her retirement money to acquire a Starcutter, (a small FTL able starship with the capacity for 25 crew and passengers) and to recruit the needed muscle, she also secured a Cors Patent from an Aelosian House, a permit that allows her to recruit foreign mercenaries and fulfill assigned missions with them. She has invested all her remaining belongings into this venture, and hopes to either get rich or die trying. Her personality is best described as pragmatic, and is far smarter than she looks, a good problem-solver that seems to get along better with foreigners than most of her elvenkin. She keeps her mind open, but her eyes wide open.

Background: When Ragnar was a member of the C'tholan Clan, he was the most feared and storied Raid Commander of his clan. He was said to have the tactical genius that would put most "Monkey Thinkers" to shame as from his vantage points, he could make out every gap and weakness in an enemies defenses. He lead several very lucrative and successful raids, but once the "Monkey Blockade" starved the Charmagnan into submission. Ragnar was left without a purpose and without honor. But he aspired to earn his honor, as well as a hefty fortune the best way he knew how. By hiring himself off as a mercenary. He would often take jobs offered my various men in power, such as governors, business magnates, and industrialists, as long as it appeased his sense of honor.

Home world: Tannenheim, lovingly called ‘Grinder’ by many war veterans.

Race: Homo Taurus, ‘Taurans’. These bipedal bovine creatures are strong in muscle, and intelligent. Their race has developed a political system based on martial strength and military prowess, which is why they accepted Elven control so readily. The Elves were clearly martially superior, partially because of their technological advancement. With the Taurans slowly assimilating these technologies, how long this remains the case is a matter of time.

Main Skill Training: Grenadier, BlackOps, Dissent suppression

Secondary Skill Training: Officer, Political interference, intimidation

Special Traits: Strong martial abilities, tough soldiers, impressive peacekeepers. The Taurans are born grenadiers, strong assault troops, forcing their way through many an unprepared defender. They are tough, brave (foolhardy, even) and fiercely loyal.

Standard Equipment:
Railgun, a magnet-powered multi-barrel machine gun that fires metallic shrapnel at a horrifying rate.
Two-handed shock mace, an electrical melee weapon that is the pride of the Tauran race. It is swift, hard-hitting and deadly in close-combat.
M-787 Hand Cannon, a sidearm that is often used by Tauran grenadiers. It is a revolver-sized pistol with a single chamber for firing a rocket-propelled grenade. Used most effectively en-masse, but does the job on its own.
Tauran Reinforced Armour, a mixture of modern technology and the Tauran culture. It looks like the armour the Taurans wore when the first Elves came, but has a few nifty tricks learned from the invaders. Reinforced steel, shock plates, reactive charges and magnetic assistance, for instance.

Miscellaneous info: The Tauran race values martial prowess and experience above almost anything. We’re not just talking about combat here, although that is an important part. Intelligence, strategical and tactical minds are even valued more than simple brute strength. This is evidenced by the Right of Conquest, an ancient law dating back to early Tauran civilisation. The Right of Conquest contains the rule that any position can be rightfully taken by an act of war. If some other Tauran has the ability to raise a larger force than another, with stronger allies, better supply lines and superior tactics and weapons, that Tauran has the right to take the other over. After combat has proven their might, of course. This Right of Conquest is a strong driver in Tauran society.

Rank: Soldier in the Tannenheim Army, Colonel in the Imperial Army, sergeant in the mercenary force.

Background: Long story. A very long story. You see, being of bovine nature, the Taurans of Tannenheim reach maturity far before humans or elves would. Specially Elves, who are nigh-immortal. The Taurans reach maturity at the age of 13-15, an age that also includes forced conscription. From the age of 15, every Tauran has to enter into the military of their respective state, warlord, emperor, governor, whatnot, to learn the required skills. From this conscription, a leader may choose the people to perform in their government, as soldiers and administrators. It’s a selection process, one might say, to see the strongest in society. Bolklov was one of those conscripted youngsters.

And he couldn’t have chosen a worse time to turn 13. Eleven years ago, the conquest-hungry Elven navy descended on the formerly independent system. While the Taurans had just developed machine guns and repeating rifles, the Elves unloaded on the world with heavy artillery, plasma rifles and space ship bombardments. A heavy hot for the Taurans at first, but not for long. Adaptivity was a desired trait among the Taurans, and as soon as the Elves hit the world for the first time, those leaders with the greatest adaptive mind rose above the others. What followed was a short period known as the ‘Rightful Taking’, in which those leaders consolidated their power above the others (following the Right of Conquest), followed by retaliation. The Taurans dug large fortifications in mountains and under the ground, creating giant networks of tunnels beneath the planet surface. They were adapting.

When the Elves noticed that their bombardment wasn’t doing much good any more, they opted for a ground assault. Rightfully thinking these creatures were far behind them in tech, they sent a few battalions of men down to the surface to round up any pockets of resistance. This turned out to be strategical failure. The first waves of infantry were completely unprepared for the harsh reality of Tannenheim. Taurans, masters of the planet’s terrain, unloaded on these few battalions with a vengeance. Among these soldiers, our good friend Bolklov. They tore the first wave to shreds in guerrilla warfare, surrounding, separating and destroying whatever forces landed on their surface.

The Elven commanders, realising they had done goofed, quickly turned up the dial of the ferocity of attacks. First, they sent armoured corps. Then, air superiority units. Drones, special forces, walkers, heavy artillery… More and more men and material poured into the planet. Had they used this amount of force immediately, they would’ve ended the war in weeks. But, as they slowly turned up the dial, the Taurans were given time to adapt. With weapons scavenged from the first infantry assaults, they could take down the armour. And with guns disassembled from the armour, they could take on more armour and even fighter planes. With weapons from fighter planes, infantry assaults became futile. The world grew in power. And with it, her unity.

It took three years for the Elven forces to finally defeat the Taurans. The world had gotten the nickname ‘Grinder’, as many who were deployed there didn’t return. Finally, with help from some proxy lords and civil strife among the Taurans, the Elves conquered Tannenheim. As her leader, they appointed a Tauran governor who had proven himself in combat. Despite everything, the Elves knew of local traditions, and they knew they had to support the strongest Tauran in Tannenheim politics. This governor happened to be the commanding general for the unit Bolklov was stationed in, who was raised to the position of ‘Imperial Guard’ for the governor.

It was there that his career finally took off. Especially in the later days of the war, Bolklov had distinguished himself as an effective commander of men, and one with a mind for politics. In the first weeks after the war, it was he who supressed any dissent among the other Tauran lords and generals. Whenever someone threatened the position of the new governor, Bolklov quickly put an end to that threat. So, when the Elven Imperial Army decided that having Taurans in the army was a good idea, the first people they turned to was the Imperial Tauran Guard. From them, they created the Tauran Regiment of Grenadiers, a specialised military unit meant to be a regiment of storm troops. Hard-hitting, charging berserkers ready for a fight.

As it soon turned out, these troops were more than just a grenadier regiment. Commanders realised that Tauran soldiers on a planet reduced the risk of revolt significantly. With tactical and strategical minds highly-placed in Tauran command, the regiment knew how to deal with insurrection. Especially Bolklov, who had dealt with Tauran insurrection on his home planet, had a head for crushing insurgents. If you know how to deal with Tauran revolts, other races become pushovers in comparison.

It was in this manner that Bolklov finally reached the rank of colonel. This, too, he did through the Right of Conquest, as was Tauran tradition. With him at the head, the regiment became a famed unit, even earning the prefix ‘Her Majesties’ in the process of killing rebellious scum throughout the galaxy. But not all was right. Back home, on Tannenheim, another insurrection had taken place. Without Bolklov to stop it, the rebels had taken their enemy through Right of Conquest. The old friend of Bolklov had bitten the dust. Now, this new governor (who was supported by the Elves) rightly feared that the grenadiers would come back to haunt him with a vengeance. So, in order to stop them, he convinced the Elven overlords that Bolklov needed to be discharged. It became an honourable discharge, the Elves fearing the grenadiers too much to really get going, but Bolklov was fired and ordered back to Tannenheim, where he would await execution.

Bolklov, not being the dying kind, did the honourable thing in return. He saluted his troops, hopped on the first freighter ship he could find and disappeared off the Imperial Rader. The Elves had no plan to get involved that much in bovine politics, so they stopped their search and went about their business. And so went Bolklov, now trying to find enough resources to one day return to Tannenheim to exact his revenge. To become the new lord, if possible. And what better place to find Fame and Fortune than a mercenary corps?

        Race: Fex. Formerly hive-minded giant mosquitoes with no free will, now a bunch of self-serving, near-paranoid violent psychopaths. Normally kept as 'attack dogs' by various groups.
        Main Skill Training: Black-Ops, Deceit, Poisoning
        Secondary Skill Training: Medic, Torture, Explosives
        Special Traits: Extremely agile, rather small, can survive off the blood of just about anything, immunity to disease and poisons, naturally poisonous, cannot use weapons or armour.
        Standard Equipment: None.
        Miscellaneous info: Psychotic space mosquitoes.

        Name: Bezewavyfeteknik (a.k.a Bezew, but normally simply referred to as 'the Fex' as is common with them)
        Age: 31
        Gender: None. Like all Fex, he is genderless.
        Rank: None. Fex did not have ranks. All Fex were either Queens or not-Queens. Queens gave orders, not-Queens followed orders.
        Background: Bezew was hatched some 21 years ago, which makes him a very old Fex, considering the average age of death for a Fex was 20. Fex pupate from their hatchling forms into their adult forms within a year, and after doing to form a mental connection with the nearest Queen, who controls everything that Fex does and leaves them no free will.

Thus Bezew has no memory of anything from his early years, as those memories are with his dead Queen. The Elves hit the planet some two decades ago. The Fex, not being a warlike race and instead simply content to cover the entirety of the planet in tunnels as the Queens sought to make their own lives as comfortable as possible, were not believed to be a threat by the Elves, who simply thought they were some native non-sentient wildlife. Small mining colonies were founded and a military garrison installed, and the Elves moved on.

Unfortunately the Elves hadn't scanned the planet deeply enough beyond the few surface mineral reserves left untouched by the Fex, mostly rare radioactive isotopes, as they were enough to warrant a colony, and didn't discover the full extent of the Fex until the first cargo transport had arrived.

The Fex had swarmed over the colony, overwhelming the garrison with sheer weight of numbers, butchering everyone and looting everything to line their Queen's nests. A response force arrived, and after a full scan of the planet revealed the full extent of the Fex network, they did the only logical thing.

They left numerous high-yield radiological explosives on the surface. The Fex, having no concept of a bomb, moved them to the nests, where they detonated. The death of 90% of Fex queens led to a psychotic break in the Fex. Enraged and with no orders to follow, they all turned on each other in a month-long bloodbath where approximately 86% of the entire race slaughtered itself.

The Elves used the chaos to extract the surviving Queens to use them to breed more Fex to use as slave labour, while the remaining 'free' Fex were sold off as guard dogs. Bezew was one of these Fex. However, the intelligence of the 'free' Fex was underestimated, and many escaped into the Galaxy at large where they became like a cancer, spreading across the stars and wreaking havoc wherever they went. Some retained the 'guard dog' persona, using it as a cover for doing whatever the hell they wanted. Bezew was one of these Fex, and was willingly traded between groups as a so-called 'loyal' Fex, unlike the 'rogue' Fex that became a parasite on the Empire.
        Physical description: Ugly bastards. They're only about two feet long from head to stinger.

Thus far, we have a sniper, a pilot, and a grenadier/tank. So, you tell me what we need to fill the gaps!

You can help me during the app phase, also to filter new apps, and I apprecciate it, but regarding the Co-op part, I am pretty clear about the direction I want the story to take, and also want to handle the crunch part all by myself. There's the fact the story happens in the universe of my NS nation, a universe only I am truly familiar with. Having a Co-op during the IC phase would complicate matters. Thanks for the offer though.

Oh, yeah, no, I was thinking as much. It was really only the OOC part I offered my help with. Your story is your story, after all. This will give you more time to focus on the story aspect.

Lunas, are you entirely positive you want to roleplay a giant mosquito? I think that might hinder a bit your possibilities of interaction and also places me in a conundrum regarding the numbers for such char, (planning to use Only War rpg rules). In retrospective I am in part to blame because I should had said "humanoid only" and I forgot. There's also a couple of minor things in your background that might need fixing, as Aelosians do not really use slave labor, for example...It's actually anathema for them. This elven empire tends to fall more towards the "good" empire side than evil tyrants. While a rogue conquistador might try to pull that, if discovered he would face capital punishment.
