@Torsi: Should post soon. Had long to-do list today.

@Prim: Bon anniversaire! Enjoy something which would probably annoy your chars!
@Doughertania, as this is on the previous page:

Yep. That's pretty much exactly what was happening with the precedent, which was my character.

The fact that "Fvaar" would be interacting with a character in that instance implied that "Fvaar" existed within the game world; like you, I don't have the authority or even the reputation to NPC someone able to alter reality on a whim; it was pointed out that "Fvaar" would be pretty potent.

Adding to current post: Another issue was the implication that PL was fictional - obviously it is, but to our characters it's real and that's not something anyone wanted to change.

I'm not sure how others see this, but I've noticed that these NPCs are seeming fairly real - which is cool, and makes interactions involving them considerably more interesting. They're also painting something of a picture of North Warnborough, through their conversations abd even their very existence.

This has gotten me thinking about the future, in which we probably will return to Bielefeld. Maybe players could put more into 'Bielefeld-citizen' ones? I think most of us have been scared to claim anything about non-player characters; I know I basically considered them staff-or-GM-territory-HANDS OFF until this story, where we did get permission to create them and many developed them further. Obviously some NPCs are still staff/GM, for instance Ayla in Gallimaufry, cultists anywhere cultists end up, and natives of nations on nation visits.

However, I think sprinkling some less-plot-important NPCs which aren't one-dimensional into posts where appropriate - for instance abroad trolleys, in restaurants, at parks - could add interest to some locations which I for one have posted for as though they were deserted. As an example, a 'couple wearing expensive-looking clothing' could be gossiping or chattering or whatnot about something - say work or the latest episode of a show - at a restaurant, resulting in a PC having to listen a little more closely to hear their dinner companions.

It's always okay to drop in some faceless NPCs when characters are roaming. There's a few short rules of thumb to them... basically, yep, they're meant to be fairly real, so abusing them risks having stuff traced back to the Residents. (Angry mobs with pitchforks! Or, worse, the city enacts laws to constrain all supernaturals).

Also, if a player doesn't have his finger on the setting's pulse, the NPCs won't fit the situation. Like if a new player tried to have a bunch of Bielefelders be shocked by some Cthulhu stuff... he might not realize that Bielefelders had survived Dani's Drone and Prim's Cthulhu invasions. Rather than vomiting and freaking, the citizens would get pissed off or - more likely - fall back on their training and start dialing their phones.

I enjoy using NPCs to pad my "out and about" posts. I take my cue from Cer or the other CoOPs. How did their NPCs react before? Do they have a "been there, done that" attitude, or were they genuinely fearful/shocked/happy/blase? Cer's shown us that the Burrow citizens aren't overly freaked by weird characters, and that they're accustomed to minotaurs and even cyborgs. He's hinted that they're even aware of the alien populations down south. So if NVE or Ocho jumped out of a bush and shouted, "BOO!", they'd probably be more prone to smacking them with a broom than running away in terror.

When in doubt, ask the OP. NPCs are a great way to infuse the IC with OOC knowledge, provided you're given the OK. For instance, peeps in the IRCs have been running over possible causes behind the Fiends' attack pattern. If they run it by Cer and he agrees, one of the NPCs in Slo or Agy's posts might tell them exactly what the cycle is, etc.

It doesn't work well in PL. The OP occasionally does it, and I'll occasionally do it when progressing a timeskip as a CoOP, but it's minimally used. That isn't to say that a character's conscious can't function in the same capacity in order for him to engage in banter in his own head. But no, breaking the 4th wall is taboo here.

Hey, so I have another question. I making my character's bio right now, and I realize I'm a bit confused. Has my character been transported to the building from their home universe somehow? And if so, do I have free reign as to why?

1) Yes.
2) Their reason for coming to the Building, or their means of transport?

I'm not giving busiwork for the rest of you in the dining room. Rather than allow your conversations to lapse into "Hey, what's up" stuff, take steps to work together to figure things out. Coordinate your defensive measures. Appoint shifts. Work with Tsu to check on the ice wall, perhaps strengthening it. Figure out what you want to do so it can be brought up at the Residents meeting. This way, you have a hand in coordinating things instead of Minerva assigning tasks.

I'm going to drop in a post for Ched to help him get his character integrated. Feel free to have a character or two jump on board with that.

I need to get reintegrated, so I'll probably (try to) do that. This weekend is still busy for me, though.

Your RL stuff is more important. I totally understand the nature of it, and why it must be so. Take your time. Hans has gone on a walkabout to offer liberty. Likewise, Agy (and others) are heading into midterms next week. Swith's under the weather. I'm expecting posts to slow.

We can work on the meeting this weekend (shortly, possibly kicking it off tonight) which will give everyone a week to sort what they want to do.

@Mon. I'm going to give Gio and Slo a chance to respond before I post for Adrastus. Meanwhile, I've had Marcus speak loudly enough for the Froxians to overhear, if you want in on that planning.

I'll reintegrate my chars at the meeting itself, my healers and fighters can be approached then.

Main chars I'll run when the meeting starts:

  • Anais - main healer
  • Mezran - main fighter
The rest of my chars are background/filler to assist and facilitate.

I intend to run all three of mine during the meeting. (Yes, I haven't finished apping Kwa'a yet...while I have most of it done the mechanics of her reality are important to her backstory and general concept...hence I've been trying to get them to conform to PL physics, which is frustrating.)

@Swith and staff in general re:NPCs: Thank you for clarifying! From now on I'll be much less hesitant about using them; do let me know if I cross any lines.
