What a way to start the new year

" '... it was always burning since the world's been turning, WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE!!!! No we didn't light it but we TRIIIIIIIIIED to fight it! We...' "

Giovenith was absolute crap at public singing, not that she cared, thoroughly rocking it out over the Disney-issued toy karaoke machine she'd dragged out into the Building New Years party. When she'd said be singing her mom's favorite song, most were expecting something a little more... rural, but Pearlelei had an infamous taste for the circa 70s-80s era. Willow played the same part as several other residents, forcing a smile and steady clapping along in order to be polite to his friend. Oh dear Celestia, why did she have to pick a 4 minute song? Mercifully though, it soon came to an end, with the godling being congratulated but also hurriedly rushed off the stage in case she decided to sing something else (which no one felt they could take anymore of it). Feeling quite accomplished, she returned to the table where her pony friend sat.

"Good job, Giovenith," Willow complimented. "That was very... unique."

"It's my mommy's favorite song!" Giovenith said, nodding and taking a sip of her apple juice through a novel swirly straw. Several people had gently offered the opportunity to try some alcohol given she was old enough by Bielefeld standards now, but being the goody-two-shoes she was, had turned it all down.

"I know, you said," the beatnik stirred his own drink. It had a few spikes in it but not enough to get him too messed up, wanting to be able to hide his overly cheerful drunk side. Given the godling also wasn't a fan of drunk people in general, he also felt it would be fair to stay sober so she could have someone to stick with in case her other companions became unbearable. "Any particular reason why?"

"Partially due to the backstory behind it," Giovenith explained, adjusting her sparkly party hat. "The singer came up with the idea for the song at a younger friend of his's birthday, where his friend told him he felt that the world at it's current state was messed up beyond fixing. When the singer tried to comfort him by saying he thought the same thing when he was age, the friend responded by scoffing and saying that nothing had happened during the singer's time, which really shocked him. So the singer decided to make the song, composed entirely of headline events from his birth year up to the year the song was written..." She took a sip of her drink. "... the "fire" is an allegory for the natural chaos and confusion of the world. It has always been here. No one generation is responsible for the world being complicated and scary, but it is none the less every generation's job to try and work with it: 'No we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it.' But ultimately no matter what we do, there will always be new crazy things shaking up the world, hence the last lines, 'But when we are gone, it will still burn on, and on, and on...' "

"Mmmm..." Willow hummed in understanding, lips on his drink. "So he's dismissing the world as fucked up?"

"Not really. The song isn't trying to be pessimistic, but rather, it's about coming to terms with the nature of chaos and encouraging future generations to not blame themselves too much for "ruining" the world, because the world was never a calm or sane place to begin with. There was never an "innocent era," you can only do what you can in the little time you have."

"I guess that's a good song to open the New Year with."

"Yes!"

Reflective confetti rained down everywhere from an unknown source though the New Year hadn't struck yet. Giovenith picked some out of her apple juice and wondered if there were anymore of those giant novelty sunglasses left somewhere. All the kooky party favor wear was always her favorite part of this holiday, and she was disappointed but not too surprised when Willow had refused to wear any. To each their own though.

"Why don't you sing something!" she suggested.

"I don't sing."

"Sterling told me ponies sing all the time!"

"Well I don't."

"Then how do you normally spend the New Year?"

"Doing exactly what it is I'm doing right now," Willow swirled the ice in his glass and took a sip.

Giovenith huffed at her pony friend's blandness, smooshing her face and turning to teasing instead. "Have you ever kiiiiiiissed a giiiiiiiirl on New Years?"

He snorted, but smiled behind his glass. "Yes, but you don't need to know the details of that. You going to kiss robo-boy when the clock chimes?"

The godling smiled and further squished her own cheeks. "Of course! But you still need to find something to do, you can't just sit here all the night. New Years is a party, you have to do party stuff, even if it's not singing or kissing!"

"I dunno, doing nothing has worked pretty swell for me so far."

"Unacceptable!"

It was unacceptable! New Years were heavy times, to think, it would never be this year number ever, ever again! Days and months repeated themselves, but never years, short of them ditching A.D. and starting a new time cycle anyway, which wasn't likely to be happening anytime soon. That's why you always had to do something extra special every time, because you could never redo the chance to do something for that year!

"Will you jump over a table?" she asked.

"Uh, no, I haven't drank that much."

"Will you start the countdown?"

"I don't think that's really something you can just start all on your own."

"Will you give a speech?"

"That falls under the same category as singing, so no."

"Dammit Willow!"

"Whaaaaaaaaat? I'm a simple stallion."

Giovenith only grew more frustrated as Willow finished off his drink without concern. She came to the realization that the pony would never go for anything that involved making a scene of himself and decided to aim lower. Problem was, New Years didn't come with many low-grade super memorable activities. You either went big, or as Willow was already willing, sat around and watched. Still, she was a creative girl, she could find something for him to toss into the celebration. Getting a lightbulb moment, she asked, "Will you pick a song..."

"Not singiiiiing..."

"Not that, will you pick a song for the DJ to play?" she asked, this time more pleadingly, propping her fists beneath her chin.

Setting his empty class down, the abstract painter leveled a look at his roommate and analyzed the amount of effort she was putting into her puppy eyes. Usually he was immune to that sort of thing, but when Giovenith did it, there were very few beings in the universe that could not fall for it.

"Fine," he gave in. "Give me the song catalogue."

"Yaaaaaay!" Giovenith got up and brought the lamenated binder book over to her pal, who began to sift through the pages for something that sounded appropriate. He wasn't familiar with any human music artists, so he had to blindly guess what might have been good for the occasion based on title alone.

His hoof settled on a song, solely because it had the word 'Goodnight' in it. "That one."

Up went the song. It didn't draw too much ire or praise from the crowd, and was largely filler for the wait for the countdown. It would be quickly forgotten, but for now, Giovenith felt somewhat satisfied, no matter how small the victory.

"I like it!" she praised.

"Kinda corny, actually."

"Hush you."

Pretty sure it's just effective story-telling, but the teens not being allowed to see Marcus just makes my blood boil. I've always hated those situations. It made me feel something, and I love when writing does that.

I like to go on Reddit to read some posts on r/Relationships sometimes, and whenever there's a post about someone not being allowed to see someone (Usually an SO's family not allowing someone to see someone in a hospital), it always makes me angry.

Part of it is that I don't know when Torsii's leave is up, and Torii and Drova have to get things squared away. Another part is that I didn't expect all the teens to go. Large group for a private moment. But also, the characters themselves don't like being told what to do or not do, which the group inside the apartment is well aware of. It would detract from the story if I had to veer off to respond to Kale trying to mess with the plants, or if Drova and Torii had a quarrel in the biogarden.

Fair enough. I (As a player) am really desperate to know whether or not Marcus is alive or not, but I'm satisfied knowing that I'll find that out through Gio, but Drova's angry that he doesn't get to know what happened (And the dick-ishness of the characters telling them to leave) because Marcus ran off for a few minutes, and now is hurt/dead. He's like "How did that even happen?"

Keep it simple.
Use Meaningful Symbolism
Use 2-3 Basic Colors.
No Lettering or Seals.
Be Distinctive.
