As part of a new effort to try and better organize PL groups and stories, we're trying to classify players by story categories as well as play and post style. We'll roll out the main features come January, but we would like some input from you guys concerning some preferences about post style.

Tilt, Swith, I'll be taking bits of your app and modifying it. Thanks.

More modifications to come later (as needed), but please fill this out and post it in the OOC for now so we can gauge the room.

Code: Select all
1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? (comedic, serious, romantic, etc)

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? (Light can be taken to mean minimal, if any, consequences to the events and short stories without long arcs, with the overall effect being a lack of effect on the world and setting at-large; heavy is antithesis to this, with long-term consequences for character behavior, stories linking together, and stories impacting the world

Please keep in mind that heavier-content roleplay can involve permanent character death if missteps occur or as part of a story arc, so if this is not for you then more likely light-content roleplay is up your alley. Not all heavy-content roleplays will involve death - not all heavy-content roleplays are dangerous - but keep in mind that with PL EPIC, we are favoring a permadeath system and moving away from the constant character revival of PL Classic)

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration?

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? (Sheepquest and Gio's Equestria event are examples of encapsulated events, while the chicken coop and feast are emergent, free-form roleplay events)

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? (# of times a day for yourself)

6) What is your preferred response frequency? (# of times a day for those you're RPing with)

7) What is your preferred post length? (minimum # of paragraphs, max # of paragraphs, etc FOR YOURSELF; be as descriptive as you want)

8) What is your preferred response length? (same as above, but for THOSE YOU'RE RPING WITH; be as descriptive as you want, again)

9) What is your favorite genre? (Anime, FPS, mystery, anything fantasy/magic, high tech etc)

10) What is your least favorite genre?

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.
My own app is below as an example:

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? Serious, Romantic, Gritty, Dark

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? Heavy

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? Multiple Branches

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? Encapsulated Events

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? 1/day - 1/2 days

6) What is your preferred response frequency? Same as above or 1/3 days, but not any faster

7) What is your preferred post length? Minimum 3 paragraphs, no maximum; prefer heavy description and character movement as well as dialog

8) What is your preferred response length? Similar to above, but I don't mind lighter description and more dialog if it moves the plot along

9) What is your favorite genre? Cyberpunk, Political

10) What is your least favorite genre? Magic, Anime

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? (comedic, serious, romantic, etc) No preference.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? (Light can be taken to mean minimal, if any, consequences to the events and short stories without long arcs, with the overall effect being a lack of effect on the world and setting at-large; heavy is antithesis to this, with long-term consequences for character behavior, stories linking together, and stories impacting the world) Heavy-content primarily.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? Multibranch.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? (Sheepquest and Gio's Equestria event are examples of encapsulated events, while the chicken coop and feast are emergent, free-form roleplay events) Encapsulated.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? (# of times a day for yourself) Genre-dependent; naturally familiarity/experience with genre is a factor.

6) What is your preferred response frequency? (# of times a day for those you're RPing with) Commensurate.

7) What is your preferred post length? (minimum # of paragraphs, max # of paragraphs, etc FOR YOURSELF; be as descriptive as you want) 2-3 paragraphs.

8) What is your preferred response length? (same as above, but for THOSE YOU'RE RPING WITH; be as descriptive as you want, again) Commensurate.

9) What is your favorite genre? (Anime, FPS, mystery, anything fantasy/magic, high tech etc) High-tech, cyberpunk/postcyberpunk, mystery, mil-fi, spy-fi.

10) What is your least favorite genre? Anime.

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? (comedic, serious, romantic, etc) Comedic, Drama, Serious are the main three. I'm willing to doRomantic too, but not often. I heavily prefer drama with mixes of humor in to break it up, as pure drama can get almost boring if its nothing but drama all the time.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? (Light can be taken to mean minimal, if any, consequences to the events and short stories without long arcs, with the overall effect being a lack of effect on the world and setting at-large; heavy is antithesis to this, with long-term consequences for character behavior, stories linking together, and stories impacting the world) Heavy, consequences ho!

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? Multiple Branches

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? (Sheepquest and Gio's Equestria event are examples of encapsulated events, while the chicken coop and feast are emergent, free-form roleplay events) I'd say Encapsulated. Means the people in charge(myself or otherwise) can keep a hold on what's happening without someone stepping in and just neutralizing the threat at once.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? (# of times a day for yourself) Any number, willing to adapt to others. I prefer posting in rounds, each player involved in the scene posting in turns so no one gets left out. It'll also fluctuate based on my schedule. Being in college is like that. Some days I get tons of time to play, others none at all. To that effect if you think I may have missed something, feel free to TG me links to posts directed to me!

6) What is your preferred response frequency? (# of times a day for those you're RPing with) Up to them, preferably within a few days, or I start to get annoyed.

7) What is your preferred post length? (minimum # of paragraphs, max # of paragraphs, etc FOR YOURSELF; be as descriptive as you want) Above 2 paragraphs ideal, can add and adapt to partners.

8) What is your preferred response length? (same as above, but for THOSE YOU'RE RPING WITH; be as descriptive as you want, again) Same.

9) What is your favorite genre? (Anime, FPS, mystery, anything fantasy/magic, high tech etc) High Tech, Sci-Fi, High Fantasy, Gritty fantasy, Cyberpunk, and a genre I'm unsure what to call but like SCP, mix of horror, psychological horror, thriller, science, and explainable phenomena.

10) What is your least favorite genre? FPS, Stereotypical anime(as gio so wonderfully explains why a bit later), Pure romantic gushy kissy-kissy kind of stuff(gets grating to read, and is a bit childish of a kind of romance)

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

1) What is your preferred brand of RP, given a choice between light and dark? A good mix of both. Light RP is fun, but it's always nice to delve into more serious things once in a while. Though I do somewhat prefer light RP's. Darker, more serious RP's are fine, but I'd rather be in one that has a meaningful story, rather than one where the GM is just trying to kill characters.

2) Do you feel that gritty RP, such as what might occur in the underbelly of Ascalon, is of interest to you? Yes.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? Yes! By that, I mean both. Some stories work when linear, and some work free-form.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? Both, but it depends on the type of story. Lighthearted events, to me, are much better when anyone can jump in and contribute, but serious events are more solid when only a single group gets to go, because it's more consistent.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? 1-2 on a slow day, 3-5 on a faster-paced day.

6) What is your preferred response frequency? At least once a day, anything more is a bonus.

7) What is your preferred post length? I try to get as descriptive as possible. I'm still not happy with the length of my posts as of right now, so I'm trying at more description and more length.

8) What is your preferred response length? I don't really have a preference, as long as it's not like, a single line or two.

9) What is your favorite genre? A healthy mix of everything (I like subjecting my characters to different scenarios), however I do imagine PL-characters as anime characters because I like the aesthetic of anime.

10) What is your least favorite genre? Probably Grimdark. I didn't want to come out and say it, but I really never was a fan of WH40k. I'm fine with PL being sort of intertwined with it, but I don't appreciate how it's sort of the setup for nearly everything. It doesn't mean that I'm not willing to participate in stories/events having to do with it, but it does mean I just never really caught on to the idea.

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? Serious, but with some healthy breaks of absurdity in between.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? Leaning heavy.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? Multiple branches.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? Encapsulated events, but I prefer the two coexist with one another for having available options.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? 1 post in 2 days or less.

6) What is your preferred response frequency? Same as above, but take your time.

7) What is your preferred post length? At least 1-2 paragraphs, no max.

8) What is your preferred response length? At least 1 paragraph I guess, no max

9) What is your favorite genre? I can work with anything honestly.

10) What is your least favorite genre? Not entirely sure, but I guess anime is sorta meh with me.

We would prefer an answer that's a little less... noncomittal. Even if you are fine with both, preferences for light/heavy content and specific tones would be helpful for the GMs to figure out what kind of events to run and for players to figure out who to invite to what events.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? Serious/Weird Fiction. I like stores to have a serious tone, I dislike watering down tension and the reality of the situation with quips. I also like stories to have major fictional elements, things should be surreal and different with large changes to reality.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? Medium. I like my actions doing things and changing the world and characters but I also want to be able to do an occasional crazy thing and not have it ripple everywhere. I suppose I just want occasional instances or places where people can act without consequence but the majority of the setting is consequence rich. Little pockets of inconsequence are good in my book, just so long as everybody know where the boundaries are to those pockets.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? I like linear primarily but I think that you can get away with mixing the two styles. An overall linear story can be broken up into different branches that each have a story but which all converge on a single end and ties them all together.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? A good combination of both. Encapsulated events should be advertised as such though and emergent free form needs real direction and focus.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? Once per day

6) What is your preferred response frequency? Once per day

7) What is your preferred post length? 2+ paragraphs.

8) What is your preferred response length? 2+ Paragraphs. But really I just want to know what my character would know, see and sense. Less than 7 paragraphs is preferable at that point it always seems to get tedious.

9) What is your favorite genre? Weird Fiction, Cosmic Horror, Cosmic Action, Grimdark, Cyber Punk, Military

10) What is your least favorite genre? Pure Comedy,

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? Serious, myself. I mean, I goof off, but I still think about it seriously.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? Light. Heavy stuff is good and fun, but I like to unwind when I RP.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? Multiple branches.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? Both have their appeal to me, so it's a hard one, but I prefer encapsulated.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? A shit ton; two/three minimum on a good day, usually whenever I can post, unless I'm busy or have writer's block.

6) What is your preferred response frequency? at least three, bare minimum. I prefer to get a lot of stuff in while I can.

7) What is your preferred post length? I try to go for at least a short paragraph, maybe more. Sometimes I like to go as long as I can go.

8) What is your preferred response length? About the same as my own post, at the least, to as long as you can make it, I suppose. Just so long as it isn't one or two sentences, unless they're damn good ones.

9) What is your favorite genre? Well, I wouldn't say anime, though I enjoy it; I imagine PL as an anime, lol. Anyways, that aside, my favorites would have to be Action/Adventure, and Tech/Sci-fi, which is why I like the Drones, Raptors, and Tech Priests are kind of cool, too. I, personally, like stuff like in the Deus Ex series.

10) What is your least favorite genre? Fantasy & Magic, definitely. I like stuff like knights and swords and strange beasts and magic, but not so much in PL. I honestly don't do anything with it, and I don't care for much that has to do with it. Science > Dirty Magicks, IMO, which is why I always liked the Raptors and Drones when compared to stuff like Cthulu/the Gods, etc.

Also, Grimdark, Eldritch stuff, yada-yada.

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? Serious.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? Heavy.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration? A bit of both, but lean more towards multi-branch.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? Encapsulated.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? Parroting Tilt - genre-dependent, but also schedule dependent. 1 post/day, maybe 2.

6) What is your preferred response frequency? Same as above.

7) What is your preferred post length? 1- 3 paragraphs, more if warranted/necessary

8) What is your preferred response length? Same as above.

9) What is your favorite genre? Scifi, spy-fi, cyberpunk, post-apoc, fantasy/magic (subjective), mil (subjective), diplomacy/politics

10) What is your least favorite genre? Anime, fantasy/magic (subjective), mil (subjective)
--subjective: nothing spoils a good magic or mil centered plot like bickering over about numbers or magic one-upmanship.

Please be aware that the questionnaire is to help tailor stories to what you (and others) are most interested in.

If you are noncommittal, we will not be able to do so, and will be correspondingly less willing to entertain feedback of any kind after the fact that a given story is not interesting to you (or others, etc).

I'm committed to PL, not a certain type of story. You're all acting like I'm gonna' fall through the cracks and never get to do anything for saying I'd be fine with anything.

Exactly. Bran, as Tilt has stated, the point of these exercises is to collect useful, meaningful data that the GMs, CoOPs, and that other players can use when planning story arcs and when figuring out what characters and players should be involved in story arcs.

Complaints about disliking certain events or story arcs, while taken into account, can only really help us if we understand why these complaints are happening, and data on preferences helps us separate disliking the subject matter from disliking how the event or arc is playing out.

1) What is your preferred tone/flavor of RP? (comedic, serious, romantic, etc)

Comedy/serious, both at once, as plenty of things are. I couldn't do any RP without any opportunity to be ridiculous, but it shouldn't be slapstick straight through either. I would like to save the world from an ancient evil inbetween hunting down Santa for his lack of gift quality.

2) Do you prefer light or heavy-content RPs? (Light can be taken to mean minimal, if any, consequences to the events and short stories without long arcs, with the overall effect being a lack of effect on the world and setting at-large; heavy is antithesis to this, with long-term consequences for character behavior, stories linking together, and stories impacting the world)

Kind of a difficult question.

Either one could give the wrong impression. I don't like the anxiety of possibly having characters die or majorly screw something up, but I also don't like having their lives and actions be totally pointless and inconsequential. I want something between "We'll all pelt each with maple syrup today lololololo!" and "This is a fucking death match, watch your step motherfuckers," where there is meaningful continuity and change but the game isn't stressful to play.

If I had to go with the closest to accurate, I'd say light. I'd risk having meaningless stories over accidentally stepping on a mine and having all the writing and thought put into a character rendered meaningless in an instant.

3) Do you prefer a more linear storyline or one which offers multiple branches for exploration?

Multibranch. If you get too linear, you risk rendering some people bored or useless.

4) Do you prefer stories run as encapsulated events or as part of emergent, free-form roleplay? (Sheepquest and Gio's Equestria event are examples of encapsulated events, while the chicken coop and feast are emergent, free-form roleplay events)

Encapsulated. It's just a safer, more efficient way of getting things done. I'm not averse to free-form, I like it too, but if I'm actually trying to accomplish something big, having people stupidly wandering in out of curiosity or boredom and getting in the way isn't something I want (I remember once I ran a very small event for about three people that wasn't even meant to be impressive or important, but for some reason like 12 fucking people caught wind and all demanded to come along - then got mad at me when said event didn't have them doing anything, when it was never meant for them to do anything in the first place). Encapsulation also allows one to have greater control over the consequences of the environment and actions, which no one can deny is a plus.

5) What is your preferred posting frequency? (# of times a day for yourself)

Minimum once a day, maximum - as many as circumstances permit per day.

6) What is your preferred response frequency? (# of times a day for those you're RPing with)

At least once every three days or so. I start getting irritated after that, but I'm understanding of real life circumstances.

7) What is your preferred post length? (minimum # of paragraphs, max # of paragraphs, etc FOR YOURSELF; be as descriptive as you want)

I try to get at least two paragraphs in - if it's less, it's generally because we're going fact-paced or I'm not really sure what to actually do. I don't really have a maximum number, if my mind permits it, I can write on and on and on and on. I generally never go over 7 paragraphs in RP though.

8) What is your preferred response length? (same as above, but for THOSE YOU'RE RPING WITH; be as descriptive as you want, again)

Preferably... five sentences to five paragraphs, in general. I can make exceptions depending on content though.

9) What is your favorite genre? (Anime, FPS, mystery, anything fantasy/magic, high tech etc)

Fantasy/magic, but not too heavy. I like worlds where anything could happen, but I don't like it when everybody needs to read through like three guidebooks in order to make a single move. Fantasy, in my opinion, should start simple and become progressively more complex.

10) What is your least favorite genre?

Gotta be Anime. I don't hate it in premise, but 99.9% of the time, it's played by weeaboos who have absolutely no idea what they're doing, and who somehow wind up making already annoying cliches within real anime even more annoying and even more frequent. They also seem to be the most prone to Mary Sues - the most common issue bringing down Anime RPs being that everybody wants to be the story's troubled little victim and it's top badass at the same time to the point of toxic manipulation, characters illogically flipping back and forth between "I will kill everyone here with my unstoppable power!" and "You can't even understand half the shit I've been through!" depending on what the player believes is more likely to get the submissive response from the other characters and players. But because everyone wants to be this at once, it soon devolves into both IC and OOC bitch-out-fests about who is more deserving of having sycophants, everyone imagining in their own heads that if they just write the longer, louder, more scathing rant, the others will see the error of their ways and immediately beg for their character's mercy and forgiveness... which of course never happens, because nobody wants to be anyone's sycophant.

This isn't a problem exclusive to Anime RP, but it is most common there because anime is the only place where bullshit crowd-winning, "You don't even know!" rants seem to work.

QUESTIONNAIRETAG A@#P%$) This is not a question and has been intentionally left not blank.

Well, I mean, I don't really have a preference, like I said. I'm willing to be in any sort of story as long as my characters don't fall by the wayside and are forgotten. I went through PL for a few years without being in any major story, I'm just grateful to be included in stuff again that feels like it has meaning. It's why I don't have a least-favorite genre, it's why I appreciate both light and dark (Light is fun when there's no dark to be had at the moment)
