The World of Lucem: Chapter 2
The Geography, Races and Major Powers of Lucem.
The Four Continents:
Lucems landmass is decided among four continents and several major islands. Though areas which should be continents are on occasion relegated to sub continents. Similar with earth, the designation of continent has more to do with politics and consistency than actual geographical features. The continents, their contents and major races are as follows:

Part 1: Aros

Aros:
Aros is the great middle continent where the great city of the gods once stood, separated from the other three by water. Much of the rest of the continent that is not part of Kazkarur is either tundra at the very bottom or Idyllic grassy plains perfect for farmland at the top. As a result it is one of the main agricultural centers of Lucem, and a hub for trade, seeing as the route between two continents passes through the Arosian river.

Aros is governed by several balkanized theocracies, desperate tribal kingdoms and other assortments of governments, but the true power in Aros comes from the corporations. These conglomerates have considerable power more so than most Arosian governments. More often a war with an Arosian government is War with the megacorperation pulling it’s strings.

Races:
Aros has a good mix of almost all Lucem races, but the ones native to Aros are as follows.

Humans: The humans of Aros are typically pale and light of hair. Humans were the closest children to most of the gods, so it only makes sense that even now on Aros they are one of the most populous species. Arosian humans are typically divided into city folk and country folk, the city folk tending towards a more tall and sinewy build while the country folk are more stout and stocky.

Scions: Scions are the Grandchildren of the gods. Being gods, they had many an affair with mortals, producing both great demigods and twisted monsters. Scions are the descendants of the former, whose retain some godly blood themselves. Scions have some great powers in relation to their parents domain. They typically have white hair and golden eyes or features telling of their godly ancestors. However, not all is sunshine for the Scions, for divine DNA is not without it’s downsides.

The Scions often suffer from horrible mutations and genetic defects, likely a result of the pure magic that warps their being. It can be nearly anything, ranging from shortened lifespans, duller wits, frailer bodies or hemophilia What’s worse is to keep the lines pure, many a Scion resort to inbreeding, making the offspring even more horrible.

Many scions go into genetic research one way or another. Either willingly in an attempt to fix the damage their godly grandparents unwittingly cause, or unwillingly, as many a government has a policy to round up dead Scions and use their bodies for genetic research. After all, the blood of the gods does make for significant fuel for progress.

Scions are the refuse of a bygone era of gods and monsters, now little more than genetic cattle for the research of once “lesser races”.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/9Qs6h ... xez5oAoK94

Duskling: When the night beasts came, they had their own gods. Or at least beings powerful enough to warrant that title. When the beasts were driven back for the first time by the gods, the gods of the night were also destroyed, Save three. Akarist, Junara and Kubelais. Of the three, Akarist is dead and Kubelais is missing, likely dead too. Junara was one of the last remaining Night-Gods. Junara was the most infamous and perhaps the most dangerous, but also the most reasonable.

When the forces of the night were nearly thrown back, Junara made a deal with the gods, betraying her own kind in return for allowing her own freedom. And in her negotiations she fell in love with one of the gods. The both of them had children who would then become a race known as the “Dusklings”.

At first marginalized, Dusklings came into their own during the second night, in which they provided pivotal roles in both the defeat of the gods and the defense against the night beast. Their nature of being caught between two worlds helped them in this case.

Nowaday’s Dusklings are almost as populous as humans. The so called children of the night have a talent for cunning and wit, making them invaluable on your side and very deadly when not. Dusklings are humanoid, though they have red or pink skin and horns of some variety. One’s horns often are seen as a sign of power and status, though in reality they have very little connection with either. A lucky few Dusklings are graced with wings and a very powerful talent for sorcery, often seen as leaders of their kind, these Dusklings are referred to as “Dusklady” or “Dusklord”.
https://prometiia.files.wordpress.com/2 ... efling.jpg

Giants:
Giants are another product of Godly-human breeding. The gods had singlehandedly created more races than most fantasy writers care to dream of mostly by having lots and lots of sex. Too bad most of those races are either extinct or were labored by so many genetic faults that the likely wish that they had gone the way of the Dodo.

The Giants though are unique in that they can be called a monumental success for the Gods, and at the same time perhaps their biggest downfall. Giants can range anywhere from 7 feet tall to the size of mountain ranges or big enough to trample countries with their big toe. Rampant magic accelerated their grown to ridiculous degrees yet without, seemingly, any of the downsides one might think doing that would have.

While you would think a race like that should rule the world, most giants are terrible leaders. They tend to be very unambitious and easily content, and also compassionate and kind. The massive ones rarely move out of fear of squashing another poor sentient, yet live forever, so often blend into the scenery over time. In fact, the most aggressive giants are the shorter ones, the ones that range from 7 to 14 feet. They don’t have the docile nature of their larger kin and instead make terrifying soldiers. As a result, the gods often enlisted them as builders.

However, after the building of the great Godly city, the giants suddenly felt cheated when their masters shut them out of the very city the built. With some masterful oration from the smaller races, even the most kind natured giant went into a frenzy. You see, while giants are very humble and nice by nature, they are prone to horrible rages which they often loose themselves in.

Unicorns:
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/73 ... be15c0.jpg
Unicorns are magical beings whom evolved naturally on Aros, quite the rarity seeing as most other beings either came here from other continents or were brought into existence by the gods “adventures” in mortal reproduction. Unicorns predate near everything on Lucem as a race, some of them able to remember back to the first Old night.

Unicorns typically have the ability to shift from human form to the form of a horse, always with a single horn pointing from their forehead. They can also take on a hybrid form if they wish, mixing traits as they desire. They are almost always very good with magic, though as a drawback they are a little slow when it comes to reproduction.

“Enhanced”
The enhanced are not so much a race as a classification. With the advance of magic hand in hand with science, magicians and scientists were on a sweet honeymoon as they realized what they could do in terms of changing the biologies of individuals to their whim. Of course such experimentation rarely got the desired result, often ended in premature death and was almost always grotesquely expensive, but the results… they often spoke for themselves. This has caused many a conflict of course. Enhanced have no rights save if they pay off the debt the corporation assigns them which is usually a fraction of the money spent in making them. Some do manage to, but most don’t and so become corporate or governmental slaves.

Most famous on Aros are perhaps the “Justicars”. A corporation created a group of super fast humanoids and then sold them to the highest bidder. They were then used as peacekeeping forces and law enforcement. Nowadays their ranks are thinning but they still keep the peace where they can.

Xyrixma:
When magical experiments fail, and they often do, often there can be an unintended consequence. Often this consequence can range from annoying to catastrophic, but they are usually temporary. This is not so with a Phenomenon called “Slimation” which permanently transforms the subject, the caster or just some random inanimate object or person nearby into a slime creature, who’s body is pure magic. Slimes tend to favor the shape of whatever they happened to be before becoming slimes, though in reality can take any shape they please. The ones that prefer humanoid shape are called Xyrixma.

When they are spawned, Xyrixma are mostly dumber than a sack of bricks. However they learn quick, some becoming very intelligent after a short period of time, though they do quickly max out at a certain point, though that point is different depending on the slime. Xyrixma almost always tend to identify as female, often appearing as female version of the species they were transformed from.

Xyrixma eat two things: Magic and Biomass. They get bigger as a result of devouring either, and can release the former in burst. They are weak to extreme temperatures however.

Powers in Aros:

The Three Alliances: (Often called the big three)
Three corporate conglomerations of multiple amalgomised companies effectively dictate the fate of Aros. War’s between them are vaguely common and they all exist in a state of pseudo cold war with one another. They all exist in a permanent stalemate, though if one were to ever get advantage over one of them they it would be the single most powerful force on Aros. Each is overseen by a director, who dictates the actions of the Alliances.

The first is the United Agricultural and Biological-research Alliance (The UAB, or the ‘Alliance' as it’s more often referred to), the second is the Clean Water Association or the ‘Association' as it’s nickname and the third is the Labour Union, or the ‘Union' as it’s more commonly called.

The Alliance has the best equipment, gear and technology, having advance genetics research on it’s side. The Association has magic on it’s side, plus a supply of sea and water based monsters. The Union has numbers on it’s side, as well as more skilled private militaries and more money.

The irony is that official wars between all sides are very short as they rely on each other for survival, so often that is why they are unsuccessful, as their private militaries have to achieve unrealistic goals to get the upper hand on one another. They trade with each other for water, food and the union controls labour. No, the real wars actually go on for much longer, even though ceasefires and treaties are organized.

Kazkarur:
http://orig02.deviantart.net/4a2b/f/201 ... 4o49nr.png
If anyone could stand up to the big three, its the city of Kazkarur itself. Perhaps the last bastion of freedom from the three groups, Kazkarur has always been a city of progress and achievement. It functions under a democracy, with various districts each having a governor and all answering to one mayor. Kazkarur covers the area an average country would, so the city state is taken very seriously, especially by the big three, each conglomerate aiming to keep the senate on it’s side while attempting to demonize the others.

Kazkarur has been fixed up after the god war, but there still remains unsafe parts of the city, still filled with godly servants and Night Beasts. Not to mention the horrible problems with crime.

Free states and cities:
There are a few states and cities relatively outside of the influence of the Big Three. The Xyrixma kingdom is slowly growing into a power worthy of respect, and there are various raider and bandit kings who claim territory in the lawless tundra to the south.

Check out part one for a brief history of Lucem
By the way, this is just worldbuilding for the place which Asdra comes from. Feel free to comment if you wish ^^.

Reminds me: in my choir class, we once sang a song about war that included Jeremiah 8:16, for which I had no context ("From Dan is heard the snorting of his horses; At the sound of the neighing of his stallions The whole land quakes; For they come and devour the land and its fullness, The city and its inhabitants."). All I could think throughout that whole song was, "Who the fuck is Dan? Why does he have world-destroying carnivorous horses? Dan is the most anticlimactic name possible for a harbinger of doom. 'Oh god no, it's Dan! Not Dan!' "

I think of the show, "Dan Vs." Great show. Chris and Dan remind me of Gio and Willow respectively, though more violent and eccentric.

"What's going on over here? Oh, magic, never mind, we're going."
"Cool, magic!"
"Seriously, how old are you?"
"Magicians have powers that normal humans can't understand, Dan!"
"No, they have gimmicky decks of cards and thinly veiled distractions. 'Watch this haaaand, you will feel a puuuuunch...' *punches*"
"Ow! How did you do that?!"
