PL: The EPIC OOC XI [closed]

I'm not afraid of Brit and Sandy going at it verbally, I'm afraid that I'm going to majorly screw up like I did years ago. I know Sandy is not Slo. That I'm sure of. I just fear that I'm going to inevitably repeat an action that's going to have major consequences. I know none of us want that. It's quickly looking like that day as I remember something good happening before it. Today I just got recommended by the CAP promotion board to be a 2nd Lieutenant. I don't want to get a leg up and then lose this again.

Then don't screw up. You're in control of your actions, here. Just make sure your characters are behaving in-character, and that you don't lash out at one of Slo's other characters as a result of this, and you will not be in danger of repeating it.

I need to point out, though, that earlier in this conversation you stated that you didn't want the meeting to play out this way. I also need to point out that you are the only person talking about you leaving. We've all suggested ways that you could resolve this conversation without leaving; none of those are consequence-free, but roleplaying would be boring if all situations could be solved without repercussions. If you leave, it will be because you chose to, not because you lost anything.

If you took any of the advice given to you over the last page or so, you would be able to salvage this situation and have Brit behave the way someone with paramilitary experience - you are in CAP, and she is your doppelganger, no? - is supposed to behave.

Hell, you can ignore the advice and just roll with the punches. Have Brit and Sandy get into it - arguments happen in real life and art is supposed to imitate life. And besides, you can't have an interesting roleplay without conflict and Cer has pointed out that many of the compelling moments we're building up to in PL are happening because of conflict.

You are not hurting anyone but yourself.

The only person who appears to be wounded by what is going on ICly is you. The players who are trying to help you out and the player you're posting off of (Slo) are all approaching this from the perspective of roleplay. Roleplay is a game; it's not real life. If that's difficult to understand, and you perceive yourself as hurting actual people when bad events happen in the IC, then I would advise stepping back from RPing for a while and straightening out your priorities.

Brit is NOT you.

There is a reason Cer has banned self-inserts (Brit escaping this ban as a result of being grandfathered in), and it's because shit like this happens. Players get too attached to their self-inserts and believe that when something happens to them, it's happening to the player. Sandy is arguing with Brit, he is not arguing with you. Stop trying to protect Brit by metagaming in the OOC to avoid punishment.

Failure is a part of life. Stop trying to give her free passes and pillow pits to fall into when she falls.

If she's a character worth keeping around, she'll learn something from falling. If not, stop playing her and play some of your other characters who are more compelling and can do more with the group.

1. CAP does prepare us to be good first responders. Sometimes all our training flies right out the window, though, especially when we encounter our first "jarring" moment in the field. That's okay. Think of what Sandy's doing as a Deputy Commander for Cadets reviewing cadets' actions after an actual REDCAP. I got roped into doing that once. I was serving as a MO, but they knew I was also an AEO that worked with cadets, and we didn't have a DCC handy. So I had to sit two of them down and explain to each that, next time, they had to make sure they kept their radios on. The cadets made a simple mistake because they were freaked out by the dead body they found. Now, every time I see them at a SAREX, they hold up their radios and snort at me. Granted, Brit doesn't feel like laughing now. But the advice Sandy gave can only serve to make her stronger. That's CAP pride. (And Sandy, being a Prof, probably doesn't believe in praise sandwiches.)

You won't, Mon. You know it's there. You know it's a dangerous slope. But you spotted it before you got too near it. Good job. Now stop poking the ledge with that stick or you might fall off it.

4. There were times in my life where I was called onto the carpet for silly stuff I had done. I wanted to just die. To vanish into the rug and never be seen again. I was so embarrassed. The feeling passes. Going off to die won't solve anything. Imagine killing yourself because you forgot to turn on a radio? Play Brit as sullen, or angry, or embarrassed, or in a state of PTSD, but don't do her the disservice of offing her over something so basic as having an error pointed out in private.

Actually, it's a chance for you to read up on PTSD. It doesn't hit right away, so her anxiety could be a slow build over time. It's an interesting character twist.

Not going to go into a sob story right now (who needs to read that this late at night, right?), so I'll take it as such and try to...well I'm gonna try to see where this goes. And I'm also going to take time to respond instead of jumping right on it. I suppose that works too. I'm trying. I really am. I just see myself getting closer to that situation last time and it makes me afraid.

Brit isn't really one to let people know what she thinks of them until it gets to a point, even despite all of what's going on. She hasn't seen Sandy act out against her. He's also older, and she respects her elders. I guess that post was just me being hot-headed.
