Background:The Martian does want to be on Earth. It a backwater plant polluted with oxygen and water, it the most hostile environment in the entire solar system and he’s stuck on it. He wasnt even so suppose be here he was headed for Venus when he crashed on this deathworld. He just wants to get home and see his broodlings. But he crashed in Afghanistan and his transportation pod was stolen by a rouge terrorist group, until he get it back or creates something similar he isn’t going anywhere. Lucky he was able to communicate with a group of US Marines in the area and make an uneasy truce. He helped them in their “War on Terror” and they would keep an eye out for his pod. But its been almost three years and nothing has showed up. The Government has offered him everything to keep him as a military asset, as they fear what someone could reverse engineer from his pod, but all he wants is a way home. So he has been assigned to the Knights as the team’s heavy hitter with the promise that NASA will make him a replacement in the next five years. But that is simply too long to got without holding the tentacles of his gene-allies so he secretly seeks out another way off planet.
I approve of the Jules Verne reference. Accepted
