History: The modern-day Wittelsbachs of Bohemia can trace their origins back to the fateful decision of Albert III, Duke of Bavaria, to take the Bohemian crown for himself in 1440. The rule of Albert III passed, with him dying in 1460. However, his 2 successors, John IV and Sigismund I, vied for the crowns of Bohemia and Bavaria. Eventually, they compromised; John would get Bavaria, Sigismund, Bohemia. Thus, the Bohemian branch of House Wittelsbach was born. Peace reigned until 1550, when the ruler of Bavaria, William IV, died of disease, leaving the Bohemian King, then Rudolf I, heading both countries. The Duchy of Bavaria was incorporated under the Kingdom of Bohemia.
Meanwhile, in nearby Italy, the crushing defeat of Austria in the Italian War of 1551–59 left Austria broken and humiliated. Many nearby nations capitalized on this, and Bohemia was no exception. On July 27th, 1567, Bohemia declared war on Austria. The weak Austrian military managed a desperate but effective defense in the Alps, dealing numerous defeats to the invading Bohemian forces, However, the main armies of Bohemia were rampaging in the flatter areas of the country, leaving Austria weak. Vienna was besieged in Summer 1567, it fell in the earliest days of Spring 1568. By this time, Bohemia had secured most of the countryside, barring a few mountain strongholds. However, following the fall of Vienna, the humiliated Hapsburgs came to the negotiating table. Austria would be integrated under the Kingdom of Bohemia as the Duchy of Austria, and would still be headed by Hapsburgs. Unhappy, but with little choice, the Austrians signed the treaty.
With both Austria and Bavaria, Bohemia was looking to be a major player in Central Europe. In 1623 it was decided that Bavaria would be granted semi-autonomy as a vassal, and, thus, the King of Bohemia gave up his position of Duke of Bavaria. Bohemia continually attempted to become Holy Roman Emperor, but was always shot down by the other electors due to it's already-immense power. The rise of Prussia in the north has left many Bohemians uncomfortable, but as the new century dawns, Bohemia remains optimistic and powerful.
