Matthew bowed his head and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath, and stood up straight.
"I fight because I can," Matthew boomed. "I fight because Merlin cannot. I fight because it is the role I play.
"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything."
He took a deep breath, and posted his staff at his side, in combat stance.
"If I fail or succeed I will have played my part. It matters not whether I win or lose, but I will not allow you to stand in my way as long as I do try."

Faal Lot Himdah wrote:The Little Girl

The little girl dodged out of the way, with a smirk. Her size was an advantage, and her enemy was enraged.

"You're sloppy." She said, driving a kick into Charlotte's back, boosted by magic, and sent Charlotte flying. "You fight the inevitable. Merlin will die. No matter what you do. My death will be avenged... So why fight? Merlin will die, if not here, in the future. More importantly, Merlin will kill you. You are just a whore. You think he cares about you? He cared about me, you saw what happen, he killed me. He will kill you."

"You are just a whore."

"You think he cares about you?"

"You are just a whore."

"Just a whore."

"A whore."

"Whore."

Charlotte lay where she'd fallen, stunned, her eyes melting back to blue.

...I...

I thought... He kissed me... He cares... Right?

He... he died for me...

He died because he pitied you. How pathetic can you be?

The girl lay there, under the cold, uncaring moon, faint with pain, alone. She could not move without feeling fire rip through her battered body.

She cried out, but nobody listened. No one heard, except for the man who'd torn her innocence away, violated her, and then turned away, smiling in a twisted sense of victory. The man who left her to bleed and die in the cold, unable to stand, no longer able to cry, as the moon marked the passing hours.

Her body, trembling with cold. Her face, flushed with shame. Her blood, dripping slowly, slowly. Her pain, the only reality.

She cried out, but in the cauldron of her tormented mind she heard only the voice of her torturer and her own screams--sounds that would forever haunt her memory and echo through her nightmares.

"Whore," he'd called her.

What was a whore? That was what she wanted to know.

It had to be something bad. She must have done something wrong, for him to make her suffer like this.

She cried out, and this time, no one heard it.

Anguish coursed through her, and she finally let her eyes close.

She felt a sob tear from her throat, and she simply buried her face in her arms, no longer caring.

Let the girl kill her.

Let her die here.

Let the world be rid of a useless, pathetic whore, who had caused the death of the one she loved.

The others would be able to save him. They were stronger than she.

The world would have him back, and she would be gone.

He wouldn't have to concern himself over her any longer. He'd be able to do better things. More important things.

This would stop not only her pain, but the pain of others.

The one who'd committed the crime was dead. Now it was time for her to die. Now it was time for one last, desperate act.

This act, this desperation, it whispered to her, words she'd wanted to hear for so long...

"This will make it okay."

The Little Girl

The girl went for the kill, but the knife never hit Charlotte. Just before the knife hit Charlotte the little girl and knife turned to ash. Something did land on Charlotte though, a key. A small key fell.

"Lies." a voice that sounded like Merlin spoke, but no form was to be seen. Ichiru would find himself able to move once again.

Black Fog

"Stubborn children. No matter if you win or lose, you can't stop the inevitable. You would be better to prepare." the fog consolidated into the 15 foot shadow Merlin. "As we speak, the girl named Charlotte meets her end. Why fight the inevitable? Because you have the foolish belief in the strength of others."

Seren shook her head at this news. Not in a sad way, or a means of denial; just as a resigned, I told you so.

It was bound to happen. I knew her emotions would get in the way of this.

Then she heard the last part.

"I do not!" she snapped.
She was waiting.

Waiting for the end.

Then she heard him.

"Lies."

"Merlin?!" she cried, and looked around frantically, finding no one. Just a small key.

She took the key and hugged it to her as if it were Merlin himself, sobbing.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I doubted. I'm sorry I ever doubted you," she whispered. "I should have remembered you weren't like that. I won't forget again."

If you were like that... I don't think I could have ever fallen in love with you.

Oh, Merlin...

I miss you so much.

Ichiru came to, as the spell broke, and he fell to his knees for a moment, his body sliding back into motion. "Ahhhh...that was not a good feeling...hm?" He stood and looked around the room. The girl was gone, as was her knife. Both had been reduced to ashes, and a key had landed on Charlotte's head. Then, Charlotte began sobbing, as she heard a voice speak to her.

"...What is going on?..." Ichiru asked gently, worried that Charlotte had indeed killed the little girl while he was frozen. Yet he went easy on her, seeing she had come to her senses and was afraid.

And then... he was there.

Just for a moment.

But... it made me happy...

Even if it wasn't for long, it made me happy.

Just to hear him again. Here and now.

He nodded. "Don't worry about it. This dream-world does some strange things to us. Besides, I was enchanted anyway, so I missed all of the action. I wonder, though..." He walked over to her and looked at the key. "...What could this lead to?" he pondered aloud.

Near Charlotte and Ichiru

Just when Ichiru asked the question, a red and gold door appeared in the center of the room. There was no keyhole. But the door seemed to radiate a feeling of acceptance. Asking to be opened.

Shadow Giant

"Oh really? Then I assume that power that you have is all your own, not giving to you by anyone? Or is that wrong? Of course its wrong. You pathetic humans could never hope to attain that power you wield by yourself." The shadow giant stated, "Face it. That is not your strength. But the strength of another being, who gave it to you... For one reason. You rely on the strength of others, and that is the truth. Denying it will not get you anywhere. SO come at me. Come at me with that power you got from another. Come at me with a strength that is not yours."

"...Another memory..." Ichiru muttered, as he looked at the door. He then looked down at the key in Charlotte's hand. "...I suppose this is for something far more important. Hold onto that..." he told her, wondering what the key could be for.

Matthew stood tall.
"This power is mine. It did not start as my own, but I have made it mine. The power is only as strong as its wielder."
He stood in a ready stance, staff spinning.
"Come at me, shadow. I dare you."
A light rune shone on each point of the blades, and beaming light radiated from each end.
"Darkness cannot fight darkness. Only light can do that."

Shadow Giant

"Oh? Another person believes that the power is his? Did you obtain that power yourself? Or was it handed to you to use? I do not argue against the fact that the power is only as strong as the wielder. But, unless you have worked to obtained that power, it isn't yours. And that power you two wield is not a power which humans can obtain, unless it is given to them. Its a shame you know... " the shadow giant said and waved his hand, and the light on the blades disappeared. "That the power you have been given is useless here."

Void and the Dream Walker

"How? How?!" The Dream Walker said in shock.

"It seems there is a third player in this game... and he's in that wall over there." Void said picking up a piece that looked much like the little girl that Charlotte and Ichiru confronted, and watched it turn to dust.

"How? I have control, how?" The Dream Walker said looking to Merlin, "Wait a second..." It was then he saw a small crack.

"That man's feelings towards his friends, is power unlike anything you will ever know. Especially towards the half angel..." Void said and a cup of tea appeared in his hand. He sipped it much like a fancy English gentleman with the smuggest possible look.

The Dream Walker scowled, "I will not underestimate it again..."

Charlotte approached the door, looking down at the key cautiously, her hand visibly shaking.

...I... I can't believe that happened. I...

She reached out to open the door, trying to calm her breathing.
"I..."

Seren just stared.

"Of course, I..."

She couldn't seem to finish a sentence.

Even Melody couldn't do everything.

"All right, then," she said with a wry smile. "You might have a point. Is there something else you wanted to say, or are we done with the formalities?"

She looked down, awkwardly tracing a scar on her arm with her free hand. For some reason, the sensation was calming.

Perhaps because after so long, the scars were a familiar constant. They never changed, never went away. They would never leave her.

What an odd thought.

"...No," she said finally. "I wasn't."

"Ah..." he muttered, turning away for a second. He then told her, "No, you did not attack me. I believe we argued, and then the little girl froze me so you two could fight." He then looked at the scar on her wrist, and became worried. "...Where are those from, if I may ask?..." he inquired.

Perhaps because after so long, the scars were a familiar constant. They never changed, never went away. They would never leave her.

"Oh," she said with relief. "I'm glad she didn't hurt you. It was all a blur, for me... just a lot of... bad things," she muttered, wincing.

Then he asked her where one of the many scars crossing her body had come from.

But this time, it was different.

This time, he was asking about one of the ones she'd created herself.

"...I-It's nothing important," she said in a rushed manner, her tone weighted with guilt.

"It must be, if you are hiding it," Ichiru assumed. "And I saw it was also on your wrist..." As he thought of the implications, his brow furrowed with concern. "Charlotte...you don't...cut yourself, do you?" he questioned.

She continued to stare at the ground.

There was a long silence...

...then she finally spoke.

"...not anymore."

He nodded sadly, as he understood that she did indeed cut herself, at one time. "Well, that's good...that you stopped, I mean..." He then turned and looked up at the giant door. "...I wonder...how long have we both been waiting at Heaven's door...waiting for the answer they desire?" he whispered, seeming to go into a sort of trance.

"Only because it didn't work," she answered wryly. "No death by natural causes, no death by self-inflicted injuries... Immortality is a curse, wouldn't you agree?"

Then her face twisted in confusion.

"...I don't understand what you mean."

"...You're close to the truth," she said quietly, "but not entirely there. I... At least I had Merlin... for a little while..." she continued, her voice dropping. "Oh, what am I saying? We're going to get him back. We have to. We need to. There are so many people he could still help... so many people he will help," she corrected herself.

He nodded to her, and his smiled returned. "That's the spirit. Are you ready to cross, then?" he inquired, looking at the door. He wondered if perhaps he seemed strange, to her.
