Void

The paper just fell to the ground, seeing as Void in his current state could not hold anything physical.

"You know. The only thing I care about at this moment is getting Merlin back to being Mer. Mainly because I can't have a satisfying freedom without my work doing him in." Void said. "So, I don't give a single fuck about this war you are talking about.... AND she's gone."

Kiri stood silently in shock, her tiny hands trembling as the beautiful creature before her flashed a brilliant pure white. The shadow that had been lurking in the room disappeared in seconds, incinerated by the intensity of the light. The creature- no, the Archangel turned to Charlotte and spoke, a voice so delicate yet strong, her smooth voice felt as if the very music of heaven were drifting into her ears. Kiri couldn't have cared less about the things the Archangel spoke of, all she knew was that she could listen to that unearthly voice forever. And as if in response to her thought's the Archangel vanished, leaving nothing behind but parchments of paper that everyone held and a single blade, shining brightly on the floor. Kiri stood silently, paper in hand, still mesmerized by the thoughts of that heavenly being.

Her wings... They were beautiful, so pretty, so big

Her mouth dropped slightly as a sliver of drool worked it's way down her chin

"So soft..."

Kiri snapped herself out of the daze. She couldn't help herself, soft things, cuddly things, warms things, they were all so... mesmerizing. She quickly wiped away the drool hoping no one would nitice and brought her attention to the paper she held in her hands. Her eyes widened slightly and she turned her attention back to Charlotte.

"Wha... What is this?"

It felt well-balanced, and was comfortable to wield--almost like it had been made for her.

...Now, if only I knew how to fight with this thing.

She then looked down at the paper, her mind still spinning slightly. She had suspected something when the Gambler had implied it earlier, but... An archangel? Asking me to join some sort of spiritual war?

...But... I'm not even an angel. I'm not even human! I'm just... me.

And that's all you need to be.

Tried to kill her?!

Ichiru was disturbed. He knew that the Archangels were supposed to be good. They were God's servants, after all. Michael, for example. Yet Charlotte was good as well. Troubled and broken, but good...

What could have possibly happened that made Angels go after her, of all people?

As if in unison, a force drew each person to the paper. As their fingers brushed the pages, each one lit up in unison. A man in a hood appeared in the center of the room, glowing blue not unlike a Star Wars-esque hologram.
"Thou whom hast read this contract, hast an opportunity before ye."
"Quit it, Michael, and use the updated version."
"Fine, boss...
"You who have received this contract.
You have an opportunity before you.
As useful as it might be for me to simply narrate this contract, a picture is worth a thousand words."

A simultaneous blackout was in order as the world grew dark.

The only thing in view to our protagonists is a panoramic of a mosaic-like piece, of peaceful world - villages with straw huts, castles, oceans.
"In the beginning, there was peace. Earth slept. Sea flowed. Air flew. Space rested. Fire waved. The elements were in balance.
On the first day, there was an idea - a spark. Written down on paper, the first god was described - and hence born. Man had created the gods. Mortal by themselves, humans possessed the one thing that only the gods shared - creativity. Imbued to the stars, their creativity had sparked a flame of much, much more.
More gods were birthed. Air gods, Water gods - the domains were being claimed as man wrote more and more."

Gods popped into view in the sky above, starting with one before slowly growing in number.
"Then disaster struck. Man had created a new god - the first evil.
Arnos, Lord of Chaos."

A dark figure appeared on the ground, as black tendrils spread through earth, water, and sky alike.
"Arnos spread his chaos quickly, before the other gods could realize this evil. He corrupted and twisted the elements. The earth bore earthquakes. Water became vortex. Air became tornado. Fire began to spread.
He convinced man to create his children. Entro, god of entropy. Xanthar, god of plague. Zila, goddess of monsters.
And finally, Ares. God of war. "

The dark figures of Arnos's following gathered under the ground.
"This was when the original gods finally took notice. They fought this new evil, but it was too strong - good knew not how to fight, with the god of war among their enemies.
But all was not lost. With the help of Aphrodite, the love goddess, the good seduced Ares to their side. He taught them how to fight with the help of a new god, Hephaestus - Master of the Forge. The war has continued since. Entire pantheons have been born."

Ares rose from the earth, joining the portrait of Aphrodite in the sky. A new portrait, Hephaestus, accompanied him.
"These you know as the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, and, the newest of the lot, the Monotheistic.
Evil has been busy, however, biding its time. Evil has spread to the mortal realm, and the number of evil gods has increased as well. Enter the Vampires, the Werewolves, the Demons, and all manner of foul creatures -
But most importantly, the Shades."

Dark figures dotted the picture, burning homes and killing men.
"In come the Watchers. A force of good created by none other than the Gambler himself. They have grown, but are too few to stop what is coming."
A few beacons of light dotted the map, but were soon flushed out.
"The time is now to take action. We cannot wait, for evil will strike soon. Arnos has awoken.
Some of you may have already been contacted by other forces.
Liai, goddess of order and justice, daughter of the Gambler. She is for good, and on our side.
The Gambler. A neutral party, unless the rules of engagement are breached. A generally useless stance.
Void. We know not your goals, Void, but you would do well to not provoke us.
This is where you all come in. We offer you a place in our pantheon, as demigods, and perhaps eventually something more.
Choose a god, and sign the contract.
Welcome to the War of the Gods, and may the Essences be with you."

The vision faded to black, and the real world slowly returned.

As the vision ended, Ichiru blinked once, and then he looked away, thinking.

Original gods?

Choose a pantheon? Something more?

Sign the contract? Become a demi-god?

War of the Gods? Essences?

What on earth does all of this mean?

He walked away from the group, and he went into the hallway alone. He needed to process what he had just heard. Another sort of spiritual warfare, even bigger than the one he was already involved with, was going to happen. "...Could it be...?" he whispered to himself, as he stood in the darkness.

Void

"So Arny's back? Cool." Void said a smile on his face and looked to the paper, "I don't know if you can hear me, but.... You want to know my goals? They have always been the same. Though I have often tried to achieve them through different means. Right now, I couldn't care less what you gods are up to. Do you expect me to sign my services to beings that are, how to put this, younger than me?"

Void chuckled, "I have more important things to do...."

As Charlotte returned to reality, she lowered her head slightly, closing her eyes.

I don't understand...

Me, a demigod? Why?

What use would I have?

"I do hope you will join us."

I wish I knew what the cost would be...

...

...

...

If I were a demigod, I'd be more powerful, wouldn't I?

If I were a demigod... I could save Merlin...

Her eyes widened as the thought crossed her mind, and she stared at the paper thoughtfully.

"No answer? Good. Looks like we can continue. It sounds like Charlotte, Kiri and... Where'd that demon kid go? Ichiru, yeah that was his name, where is he?" Void said, "Anyways... Everton. You have yet to say if you are in or not. So, are you willing to join us? Or are you going to go make up with the Miss's?"

You have yet to say if you are in or not. So, are you willing to join us? Or are you going to go make up with the Miss's?"

Ichiru listened from the hallway, and while he was annoyed that Void had referred to him as the "demon kid", he let it pass. He did, however, sneak closer to the room, to listen to what Void was planning to do. He also wanted to hear what the others thought about it. However, he did not want to step back into the room just yet. He needed to stand away from the group, to sort his thoughts.

"I don't care about power or gifts that someone else will give to me", Kiri said, her expression stern.

"Quartz once said to me Kiri, the only power you need is the one inside of you, having power changes people, especially of that power isn't earned or worked for. I believe in those words."

"Charlotte. I want to save Merlin too, but what do you think he would say if you changed along the way?"

"I don't think the contract or power or whatever it is, will bring us happiness."

Her serious expression softened,

"I mean, all we need is a place to eat."

Her stomach growled loudly.

"I'm really hungry..."

Void

"Oh boo who." Void said to Kiri, slightly annoyed, "What is it with humans and short attention spans? Like seriously I have seen goldfish who pays attention longer." He snapped his fingers, and a dark red magic circle surrounded them all with an independent one appearing on Merlin's forehead, "Everton. I need an answer now. And Ichiru stop hiding and join us."

Kiri took a quick swing of her fist at Void which passed harmlessly through.

"I'm not a goldfish." She said indignantly folding her arms and standing straight in an attempt to hide her discomfort.

"I just have more energy than old people like you."

Pouting marched forward stubbornly and nudged Charlotte toward Merlin. Deciding that she was too hard to push Kiri turned and walked fearlessly up to Void, taking a place by him.

Charlotte's face was drawn with worry, now. She didn't know what Merlin would think if she accepted the offer.

But at the same time, she wanted to accept it. The things she could do with power like that... She could really make a difference, she imagined. Instead of being that slightly irritating tagalong Naphil, she could use her power to help the Watchers. To have a purpose.

And wasn't that what she'd wished for for such a long time? To have a reason to keep living?

She'd found Merlin, yes, but then this Dream Walker thing had nearly destroyed that. She thought, perhaps, if she had this power, she could protect him from that ever happening again.

She realized with a start that she had absolutely no idea how much power a demigod even had...

I'm going to have to think about this more, but... I think in the end, I might just agree.

She was growing irritated at Everton and Ichiru's lack of response. Did they not care? Did they just think that they had better things to do? She wanted to physically drag them over. What do you have to do that's more important than bringing Merlin back?! she wanted to scream, but... that could ruin everything, she thought. Better to keep it hidden for now. I'm just concerned because he's my friend. Hah. I'm sure that will be believable, if you have the deductive skills of a rock.

She noticed awkwardly that, other than Void, she was standing closest to Merlin's body, but mentally shrugged it off. Coincidence.

Ichiru did come out from hiding, but as he walked back toward the group, he glared coolly at Void. "Kiri is far wiser than you are, I see now. But I suppose that is an argument for another time. Let us go and save Merlin," he answered, calmly. He stood next to Charlotte, and he waited to see what Void would have them do.

A few of the notions mentioned were interesting, but not really. He was too busy trying to look for catches. Just like Quartz did with literally everything.

"Of course I'm fucking in to saving Merlin," Everton snapped. "You don't seem to understand how out I've been over the last few hours. He looked at Kiri and smiled. Her naivete and persistent confidence was a gracious respite from the recent anger surrounding him and Quartz. Enough of one that he clenched his fists and breathed, trying his best to expel it. Why couldn't he be a little more like Kiri?

"Sorry about the fight, Kiri," he said in a far more calm manner. "I'll sort it out after this. I'm sure there's something I can do to fix it."

Void

"I'll have you know that I am not a demon. I may be a demonic force, but that doesn't make me a demon. Calling me a demon says that someone is above me. I am an embodiment of a force older than creation. Have your facts straight before you speak boy." Void said, and then looked at them all. "Understand this. I am not apathetic, I understand emotion. How else could I make inappropriate comments at inappropriate times." he smirked.

"Five beings. A demon kid. A holy child. A runemaster. A half angel. And myself. This is quite the band we have. Anyways, before we go, one last thing. I will not be with you bunch at the start. I'll try and distract the Dream Walker as long as possible. You four, stick together. Before we can even fathom the idea of defeating the Dream Walker, you need to break its hold on the three parts of Mer's mind. The persona, the subconscious and the ego." he said, "With that said. I can't say what you'll face. But try to stay together. Don't get lost."

With that Void disappeared and they would all fall to sleep. They would wake up in a strange forest, it looked normal, except for the miniature floating purple obelisks. There was a path at their feet that lead further into the forest. On the horizon, a floating castle thing could be seen.

Once again, Ichiru found his new moniker "demon kid" to be annoying, but he focused on the task at hand. Moments after Void disappeared, he indeed did fall asleep, passing-out on the ground near Charlotte and Everton.

When he opened his eyes again, the sun in the sky peeked down at him from behind the trees, waking him. He felt his back lying against the cool grass, and he looked around. Everyone else was there with him. Sitting up, he rubbed the back of his neck, which had been tight from stress. "...I am guessing this is Merlin's mind?..." he asked nobody in particular.

Charlotte looked around and commented dryly, "It's like we fell into a fantasy novel."

Except the stakes are higher.

"Come on," she urged, and set off, taking the path. "We need to hurry--You heard what Void said, 'as long as possible'. Void isn't powerful enough to hold the Dream Walker off forever, which means we need to minimize the amount of time that he has to."

Normally she wouldn't dare take command like this, but she reminded herself that Merlin's life was at stake. She would do anything to save him; things she wouldn't do for anyone else.

She'd proved that during her first attempt to save his life. An offer she wouldn't have made under any other circumstances... and yet she'd done it.

For Merlin, she'd do anything.

Ichiru nodded to her, and he followed her with the others. In the meantime, he looked at all the floating obelisks, confused. What exactly do these mean?... he thought. He also wondered if maybe they would see any other spirits here, besides Dream Walkers...

With a snap of her fingers, The three suddenly looked into he mind of Merlin - that is, the strange forest.
"Here lies your first task - assist your friends in defeating a Dream Walker."
Liai laughed.
"Not as you are, however."
She took their Watcher canes in hand and closed her eyes. With a flash of light she handed them back.
Matthew inspected the cane. Almost accidentally, he brushed a button at the center. The staff hissed, and identical blades around three feet long slid out from each end. The edges pulsed with a purplish blue glow, and Matthew experimentally slammed it into the dimension matter they stood upon. It sliced right into the fabric of the dimension, standing on its own.
"Raw Essence weapons," Liai spoke gravely, a serious expression on her face.
"Some would say god killers. Though not enough to actually kill a god, raw essence can cut anything except other essence. Use it wisely."
Then with a wave she was gone, and the two Watchers had been transported to the forest.

"Well!" Seren said with an enormous grin. "That was fascinating." She looked like a child who'd just been handed a new toy--or maybe ten new toys. "I'm quite happy with how things are turning out, what about you, Matthew?"

Void, somewhere in Merlin's mind

Void appeared in front of a door. Taking a breath he opened the door. It was a dark room he walked into, embedded in the back wall, was what looked like a giant purple gem, inside the gem, was a familiar figure. Merlin. His eyes closed, trapped. Void's eyes did not look to him though, he looked to the figure standing in front of the gem.

"Ah, so Void returns.... this time with allies. Don't think I have not felt their presence. Let me guess, you are here to distract me, while those six try and free my toy." the Dream Walker said, "It won't work, I will ---"

"Oh just shut up. I know I can't beat you in a fight, but I know what you like. You like games. So I have come to purpose a game." Void said, Six, I only brought four.... damn those 'gods' they are interfering aren't they.... I'll use this though.

"What sort of game?"

"A simple game. Those six will attempt to free the three parts of Mer's mind that you have locked up. That is their goal. They are my pieces." a table appeared, over it looked like a map. Six pieces appeared on Void's side of the table. Each one was shaped exactly like the six people who came to save Merlin. "My goal is to have my pieces succeed. Your goal is to stop them. The rules are simple. I only get these six pieces, you can send what ever you want to counter them. But what's a game without a wager. If I win, you free Merlin."

"And if I win?"

"You can have Merlin, and my six pieces." Void said and put out his hand.

The Dream Walker smirked, and grabbed Void's hand. "I accept the terms of the game. Let the game begin." with a snap of his fingers, the six would find themselves suddenly at the castle's entrance.
