Are you talking about as if Everton was replaced by me or something?
If that's so...
I would conclude that Charlotte was depressed in some way that she was hiding and needed a therapist, good relationship and kindness.

She's been possessed/she co-exists/split personalities(verb) with some kind of nameless evil psychopath demon that wants to cause pain and sadness, and Charlotte's been struggling to contain it for near her entire life/5 years, and this has caused her to alienate almost everyone and basically make her sadder. Vicious cycle.

Hmm, yes...
Not possessed, not really a co-existence, more of the split personality thing, he has a name, he's not actually a demon, and yes, although that's not the only reason she alienates almost everyone.
He's also a person...
