The PT-FT system is too vague for my tastes. There are other systems out there. One of my favorites is found in Traveller. (Charts and brief overview.)

Huh! Looks like the GURPS Traveller v3/v4 guys did a nice job fleshing out the Classic Traveller mess. It's probably more than suitable for NS RPing up to TL 9ish-11ish (PMT). After that, it's all wibbly-wobbly techy-wechy handwavium, in a variety of flavors.

Still has vague nostalgia for the Classic Traveller setting, despite its limitations.

We could always adapt it for our needs. I like the way it gives an easy reference cap for the various categories. It's also a bit forgiving. For example, cities in jungle terrain are considered modern tech but we can bend that rule a bit for species that exist nowhere outside of a jungle. Their culture would have evolved to compensate.

Yup, yup-yup-yup. That's one reason that I prefer specific historical periods for "past tech". Playing "dreadnought and sabre" changes a lot between 1905-tech and 1915-tech.

Sure. My objections to using even GURPS v4 TLs for NS FT RP is that the latter is all Clarkian. If the players can agree on the forms of FT magic they're using, they can play. If not, they can't.

See, Our Heroes are the new owners of the Free Trader Snafu, a rather battered scow on which they owe some improbable number of megaCredits. The ship was, until just before the curtain goes up, owned by Captain Coolness, a shrewd merchant, skilled pilot, ace gunner, excellent manager, and all-around great guy. Captain Coolness cashed in his chips a little while ago. Our Heroes have just read Captain Coolness' Last Will and Testament, and found that as a final gift, he's bequeathed the ship to them.

The Snafu is inbound with a full cargo hold for Babblekund IV, and Our Heroes hear the Offical Introductory Radio Broadcast. The Beowulf is about 20 minutes flight time away, adrift outbound from Babblekund IV.

Curtain rises, and... action!

We could start by cutting up the player application. An RP needs a name, a genre, and a perspective; a franchise field is useful too. Hm. Also a field for a scenario description/abstract, and possibly a sketch of the first OOC or IC post to give people an idea of what to expect.

The OOC looks sharp. Plenty of info, simple to understand.

In my experience, Friday/Saturday launches gather more activity. You might not see the thread pick up until then. The key will be to keep the OOC active so it remains on the first page during peak times.

You already hit the advert thread. The Cafe is another good resource.

Now the bad news. Many RP based on franchises are successful due to large fan bases. Atomic Robo appeals to a much smaller audience. A tabletop-to-PBP might not attract players unfamiliar with the franchise.

Thanks Cer, though I threw out all of the Tabletop so I'm just using the setting. And I'm aware of the size of the fanbase here on NS is just me and maybe one other guy who mentioned it once and is still active. I see that as an advantage for myself as I'm the one who knows most about the setting so there is nobody to complain about canon when I go off the reservation and say for example give Stephen Hawking an exosuit.

No, Mecha-Hawking is not going to appear.

zomg! The "pool of sick colours"! I tracked down the symbol, finally. It's the Mythical & Hoplite Noodgies font, lower case 'p'.

I'd really, reeeeaaallly like to go back to the original symbol and font, in honor of Briter (he was the gog's original graphics guru). We'd in no way use the bright pink. Everyone's thoughts?

The logo font is called Digit. It's notoriously difficult to read but that was part of the purpose back then. Members knew what it said. Nonmembers asked us what it was, and once they found out, they wanted in. It wasn't very intrusive when used as part of a sig on an OSF or other gamer forum.
