Military Information
Military Branches: The Russian military contains three main branches in the Russian Army, Russian Navy and Russian Aerospace force. The military also contains sub branches such as the Airborne troops, Rear of the Russian army and Strategic Missile force. These forces make up the Russian military and all fall under the ministry of defense.
Active Size of Military(With Branches): As of 2008, some 480,000 young men are brought into the Army via conscription in two call-ups each year. The term of service is 12 months. Eligible age is 18 to 27 years old. n 2006, the Ground Forces included an estimated total of 395,000 persons, including an approximately 190,000 conscripts and 35,000 personnel of the Airborne Forces (VDV). This can be compared to an estimated 670,000, with 210,000 conscripts, in 1995–96. These numbers should be treated with caution, however, due to the difficulty for those outside Russia to make accurate assessments, and confusion even within the General Staff on the numbers of conscripts within the force. RuAF pilots average 80 to 100 flight hours per year. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, share of modern armament in the Air Force has reached about 35% in 2014. The figure was raised to 55.6% by mid-2015.
Reserve Force: Look above
Primary Weapon (Rifle): The standard assault rifle of the Russian armed forces is the AK-74M. In 1991 the Izhmash factory in the city of Izhevsk began full-scale production of a modernized variant of the AK-74—the AK-74M (M—Russian: Модернизированный; Modernizirovanniy or "modernized") assault rifle that offers more versatility compared to its predecessor. Apart from several minor improvements, such as a lightened bolt and carrier assembly to reduce the impulse of the gas piston and bolt carrier during firing, the rifle features a new synthetic stock made from a black, glass-filled polyamide that is shaped like the AK-74 fixed stock, but also side-folds like in the AKS-74. Additionally the AK-74M features an improved muzzle device, a reinforced smooth dust cover and a redesigned guide rod return spring retainer that allows firing the GP-25, GP-30 and GP-34 under-slung grenade launchers without having to use the previously necessary additional receiver cover fastener. Each AK-74M is fitted with a side-rail bracket for mounting optics. The AK-74M would have been adopted by the Soviet Union as the standard service rifle, and has been accepted as the new service rifle of the Russian Federation with some AK-74Ms featuring a Picatinny rail for easier mounting of optics that lack a side-rail mount. The rifle is slowly being phased out and is expected to be in main service till 2022.
Secondary Weapon(Handgun): The primary sidearm of the Russian armed forces varies but the most common is the Arsenal firearms strike one. he Arsenal Firearms "Strike One" is a polymer-framed, short recoil operated, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol introduced by the company Arsenal Firearms in 2012. The Strike One uses a Bergmann System, which has not been used since late 19th century. Unlike the Browning system, the barrel does not tilt. It is locked with a Y shaped part that during the recoil locks the barrel and bolt and half way through it drops, releasing the barrel. The barrel stops its motion, the bolt continues back, ejecting spent round loading fresh one and on its way back the Y shaped locking fork reengages and the barrel and bolt move together forward. In the Strike One, however, the barrel does not tilt. Instead, it moves in a straight line, thus increasing the accuracy. The bore line in Strike One is lower than even on a Glock, further reducing the barrel climb during rapid firing. The Strike one is rated for +P+ ammunition and specifically set up to fire Russian 9×19mm ammunition 7N21 and 7N31 which are close to .357 SIG in their performance. The pistol will be available in: 9×19mm, 9×21mm IMI, .357 SIG, and .40 S&W. There is no discussion for 10mm Auto or .45 ACP versions, although a .38 Super version is being considered due to this cartridge's popularity in Italy in particular (Italian laws forbid civilians to have weapons in the same caliber as military and police). A fully automatic version of Strike Onewas madefor the Russian Armed Forces. Longer barreled version (300mm) is also available.
