During his childhood he benefitted from a classical education, and proved to be a knowledgeable sort, as well as a skilled duelist, though he wasn't precisely the best when it came to sporting games, and has a perpetual limp that's followed him into adulthood after an unfortunate incident involving a primitive form of rugby in his teenage years. Afterwards, he dedicated his time to being a jack of all trades, learning the art of fighting with a sword and shield as well as learning to operate matchlock pistols and muskets.

After the discovery of the new world, Marks eagerly volunteered to join some... noted explorer (Marks doesn't remember his name too well) on an expedition to the new continents, where he was one of the first Europeans to set foot in North America (well, one of the first few hundred, anyways). While on his own, taking a look at a nearby lake, he came across a crashed ship and decided to investigate it. Unfortunately, it was being watched carefully, and he was taken into the mothership along with the crashed scout ship. After being 'prodded' for information, Marks was stuffed into cryo storage and promptly forgotten about.

Biography: A quiet, reserved man, Hal was born in the New Californian town of New Reno. Never knowing his parents, Hal tried to make his best as a street urchin before scrounging up enough caps to buy a 10mm pistol at 16. He then became an enforcer for the Wright mob family, collecting from bar tenders and brahmin rustlers who owed money to the family, and forcing them to pay up if necessary.

At 22, Hal wanted to settle for a job that let him see the wastes while also higher paying. So he collected his last pay check and moved to The Hub, where he got a job for the Crimson Caravan company. This job let him see everywhere from Modoc to Gecko, from Shady Sands to Dayglow, and so on. He quickly became known as a tough, reliable guard who was a crack shot with a rifle, but didn't speak unless he had to. And when he did, it was usually just basic remarks or comments.

Sometime in 2276, the caravan he was guarding was attacked by raiders north of Arroyo. While the others were all killed, he was knocked unconscious, and presumably the raiders didn't know he was still alive. Hal woke up alone in the middle of the road, the only evidence of the attack left being the corpses of his coworkers and pack brahmin. Hal was collecting his barings and getting ready to travel south when he was blinded by a bright flash, and abducted.
