Hello P2TM, hello everybody!

I wanted to address some things that have been going on in our group, P2TM and the NS community at large. The speakers and I have been talking about some things, and now that a lot has been aired, would like to bring it out in the open for everyone to shake their GM staff at.

Now, to segway to why I'm in your mail box today:

In the current year, things are a bit different in CoM. A few big names are no longer with us, either partly or entirely. There has been a tick-down in activity in the CoM OOC, big enough for us to notice. And from what I hear, this isn't just with our group; P2TM is feeling these same things too.
So, for me, this brings some questions to mind:

1) Activity (NS Summer is nearly upon us, and with it, the promise of many new and old faces)
2) Longevity (How to keep CoM strong and relevant in the current year and the coming 2018)
3) Whats Next (Pub and The Madhouse have shiny, new stuff. We need some.)
Before I put up my own ideas, I'd really like to hear everyone's else thoughts on these matters, and any others that they'd like to bring forward. So please, anyone, have the floor.

The points mentioned stand up for discussion here, as well as anything else you guys think would be relevant to talk about and add to the discussion. Now, here are some solutions that have already been worked out by the Speakers:

I think it might be cool if we could work on something cool and big. Some sort of rp that'll be fun and attractive to revitalize everything with new ideas and such.

For sure though, even with some people leaving or slowing down we have a great group and we should work to keep it thriving.
Uhh so random thoughts.

Charm's right, a fun RP that appeals to lots of people could really get people going.

-Maybe we could aim to make it newbie friendly? Put an emphasis on encouraging and mentoring less experienced players and advertise it like that?

-We don't have like a chat do we? Unless I'm just not in it. Maybe like an official discord server or something similar would be cool, I'm not familiar with a lot of the options outside discord but with that it's easy to have multiple channels and the like so people can shitpost or just socialize without the more serious areas being cluttered.
Cosmetic makeover? The front page is good but it could be more eye catching, some stuff could be moved around.

-What about having the next thread be hosted by an admin account that multiple people have the password for? It'd be easier to update things and add links to new RPs or useful resources. And do stuff like change the poll or what have you.

Many thanks to Charm for setting us up on Discord. The general chat is set. We only have to work on getting an introduction and announcements channel up, for CoM business.

So it seems we already have some runners up for possible CotM Projects. My plan, if its cool with everyone, was to make a short-list of ideas, current and past RPs that are from members of CotM. Put the list to a general vote, selecting the top three for official Summer Project status in CotM. Group members would be encouraged to include themselves, either constructing or RPing, within one of these RPs.

Right now, the list is Atria's Technologic Arcanum, and URA's Project Warfighter.
Thoughts friends?

I can reboot the PW if URA allows. After all, I have experience on military-related RP, though given its complexity, I'll need assistances. Also, Tri, you might not know but I made two renditions of Peacekeepers RP, basically like PW except individual characters in a team, not a group of teams in the RP.

Well let's start broad and narrow as we go.

I think character based to start with, having one perspective to focus on is probably going to be easier for newer players. Although I never do nation stuff anymore so maybe I'm just biased there.

I think fandom isn't the way to go, since particular fandoms are only going to attract their fans and crossover or multiverse style RPs are appealing but can be messy and confusing for newer players.

I wouldn't focus overly on mechanics, I suspect newer players might not get on with them unless they are already coming form a tabletop or similar background, again might be my own biases. A simple stat system for character creation can help new players nail down their character's strengths and weaknesses and evolve without becoming unbalanced however.

Something colorful with plenty of action, maybe lighthearted fantasy or superheroes are always popular come. Other potential themes could be zombies or urban fantasy or maybe something like steampunk. Supernatural stuff like demons and vampires and the like might be worth thinking about too.
Simple but flexible and fun character creation. Players should be able to easily create someone who stands out without being OP but is still fun and exciting. Superheroes is great for this because you can encourage people to pick ONE power and build around it, encouraging them to creatively use that power instead of tacking on extra ones. Even if we go for another setting we might still benefit from a one power/role type system. As I mentioned above a simple stat system might be useful, it provides new players with a way to gauge how difficult something should be for their character and removes to some extent the temptation for every character to suddenly be an expert at whatever the plot calls for.

This one might set off some red flags with more experienced players but academy settings are usually popular with newer players. They might be a bit of a cliche but they do have some strengths to consider, especially for dealing with newer players.

*A fixed location: If most or all of the action is focused around one location we can really flesh out that one location and it becomes a lot easier for players to take space into account: where am I, who else is there? how long would it take to go to where other people are? If we have a map and the space becomes familiar it's way easier to get a handle on that stuff.

*Players and their characters can learn as they go: The whole point of an academy setting is that the characters are there to learn so new players don't have to internalize large chunks of lore or history to convincingly play their perspectives.

*It's less of an issue when characters act out: Okay so Player A decides their character is a badass and when an NPC that's supposed to be their boss gives them an instruction they mouth off and do their own thing. In some settings and stories this is a huge issue, in a military setting that's some pretty serious insubordination and to handle it in a manner accurate to the setting might entail a lengthy detour. Other options such as asking for a rewrite or flatout ignoring the post can be messy. In a school setting you jsut give 'em detention, badly behaved kids actually add to the fiction. Obviously it's not a good idea to deal with bad player behavior solely through IC events, you combine that with OOC talk to address the underlying issue but IC consequences add weight to the action and encourage players to really inhabit their perspectives.
*Finally many of our new players are likely to be highschoolers, making it a setting that's instantly recognizable and relevant to them and the characters involved will be easy to get to grips with. One thing I've noticed is that it's very hard to convincingly write a character older than yourself and relatively easier to write one that's younger, after all it lets you draw on your own experiences.

Well this ended up being a lot longer than I planned. Here is the cliff notes version.

Character based
Colorful setting, probably with some recognizable fantastical or supernatural elements, with plenty of action
Fun, easy character creation
Possibly an academy setting or one that has similar advantages.
Love to hear other people's thoughts.

I AWAKEN FROM MY SLUMBER
Okay, so I've been thinking some about that idea, Tri--finals are kickin' my ass so I haven't been on. Many apology.
I had an idea involving a fantasy slice-of-life: a magical community within a larger "normal" city with all sorta cool shit happening but there's some sinister shit happening beneath the surface. I can throw together an OP real quick when summer starts.

So to sum up:

1. Chat: We've worked out the start of a Discord. It will be encouraged as a tool for instant messaging, not a replacement for posting in the group thread. People can do both, and it is encouraged.
2. CotM Summer Projects (better name pending) are a thing now: original ideas, current and rebooted RPs from members of CotM are to be offered to the group in thread, kinda like we already do. Except, these will be the pet projects of CotM, as a community, for the season they are offered in. A short-list of these will be compiled, then put to a general vote, selecting the top three for official Summer Project status in CotM. All members of CotM would be encouraged to include themselves, either constructing or RPing, within one of these RPs for the season. This will give us somethings to put out to P2TM and advertise that we are a group of great RPers, as well as keep things active and fun for us all here.
3. Altannia's RP for Newcomers: A basic RP that would be inclusive to a great many newblings, but still fun and attractive to you old veterans! Lets beat the drum, and get some new blood in here.
4. Preparing For III: A new thread is imminent. And unfortunately, our Great and Mighty OP rest in pepperoni. Temp has said he will be gone, checking back occasionally, but will not be leading us into a great and glorious 3rd Thread. If we'd like this group to continue, we kinda need that. So, I propose that an official CotM nation account be created, shared between the CotM Speakers, for the purpose of continuing the group and ease of management.

I recently got permission to make an rp similar to Owl Creek Academy, brought to us by UKP and Britanania.

My rp will be more of a spiritual successor than anything, but i will be using things from it.

The rp will take Elements from the X-men series, the Charlie Bone Series, the rp above and the Game Bully.

The Rp will take place in Mellow-Brook Preparatory School, name may be subject to change. The school will be well known for accepting and 'reforming' troubled students. The vast majority of these troubled students will either be Metahuman or Psionic, havent decided yet. Either way they will hold great power and the world would shun them if they were revealed. The rp will focus around both Human and not entirely human students, focusing on the troublemakers and those that involve themselves in the school.

This will be my next Academy style rp, most likely, unless i finally try to reboot Thelrose Academy.

Edit: i just had a thought, concerning a naruto rp following a band of rogue shinobi mercaneries, eh?

Though my next rp, will most likely be Mellow-Brook Academy i had thought of another interesting idea.

A naruto rp, different from many of the great ones that have been made. It would follow a group of mercanaerie rogue shinobi in the wake of one of the shinobi wars. Could be interesting.
