The Canadian Northwest within a 50-75 mile radius of Vancouver BC is clusterfucked in a Civil War right now.

Sounds like somewhere I'd like to be.

Posts are good. You just have a long way before you can even encounter someone though. Pretty far from the others.

Oh sure probably somewhere amongst the numerous factions of rebels. No clue who's going to win. Probably the Infected. Loyalists are still wrecked after the Emerald War. Rebels always have shitty equipment anyways, plus it's the Post-Apocalypse. Warlords and Bandits will either get killed off by Loyalists, Rebels, other Warlords and/or Bandits, Infighting, or Infected.
Cheers mates.

So I have this hangup over using images I found off google to represent my characters. Part of it's because I'll never find an image that perfectly encapsulates my character and part of it's because it feels like stealing someone else's work.

So instead, I draw them myself. Here's the most recent WIP of Kyrissa Kerembor, my character from my other RP. Usually I'll first sketch the character on pencil and paper, then ink over the lines I want to keep. Previously I would then just shade in the image with pencil and the end result would be monochrome, because I am crap at any sort of colouring medium. Recently though, I've started experimenting with colouring on my iPad using an app, which is what produced Kyr up there.

Anyway, this is Flak, having almost finished the initial sketching. Already I can tell that colouring him' going to be a heck of a lot more challenging than Kyr, since he's going to be a lot dirtier and his clothing is more of a scavenged eclectic mix rather than hers, which means more colours. Still, I'm looking forward to it!

Nice. I'm the same, would rather draw my characters rather than use a generic google image. Feels more personal. I typically loosely sketch on paper and then transfer into line art on Photoshop or Illustrator (having a scanner would make this so much easier). Then it's just motivation to get it redrawn. Actually working on a sketch of Sera.

Fun fact: Flak and Kyr both started off as stick figures. Then I just kept adding to them.

Best advice I can give you is literally just go on Google and search "How to draw X" where X can be manga, comic book characters, female anatomy, eyes or whatever you happen to be struggling with at the time and want to improve. Guaranteed, you'll find plenty of step-by-step walkthroughs. They may look intimidating at first when you see the finished product that you're aiming for but you can just straight-up copy them to start with and you'll probably be amazed at how good something comes out after just following the instructions. Then, once you get the hang of the style (which'll only take a couple of practice sessions, really) you can start experimenting with your own stuff.

Ah, well apparently the way I want to draw is harder than everyone elses, as I prefer realistic looking, and less cartoony, as I myself am not a fan of anime, or manga, so it seems to be a more difficult approach in my opinion. The heads are the easiest part, but drawing torsos and pants and shoes, and Oh my God hands are a nightmare.

My main problem used to be legs. These days it's eyes; I just fucked up Flak's right this minute and now he looks like a crazy old man!

The funny thing is, both realistic and cartoonish-style art use a lot of the same basic techniques. In both cases the artist will almost certainly start by drawing a rough 'skeleton' - basically a stick figure with ovals and simple shapes for head, torso, arms and legs, etc. what follows afterwards is simply a question of fleshing out that skeleton and adding detail. If you're going for realism, just got for less abstraction spend more time on that detail work. And again, the internet's still got hundreds of free tutorials for doing realistic artwork as well.

For anyone wondering, I joined this website during my edgy teenage years. I made a lot of dumb, awkward posts, flip-flopped between various extreme ideologies, and just generally embarrassed myself. I denounce a sizable amount of my past posts. I am no longer active on NationStates and this nation/account is no longer used.

I was kinda hoping the link would be the guy from FLCL.

I just pictured her with thicker eyebrows and that's how they came out in the line work. Maybe I'll try shrinking them back.

I don't know what FLCL is.

Hmm, perhaps it's not only the size of the eyebrows, but also the colour and shape. They're different from her hair, so they look kinda weird. And they could also be stretched out a bit so they look a bit more normal.

I'm not trying to be overly critical or anything, and feel free to disregard anything I say, because when it comes to art, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
