We'll probably begin in 1940--in regards to exact technology and weaponry, it'll be variable. But later technology (i.e. weapons/tech developed in mid/late 1943 to 1945, sans nuclear weaponry) won't become available until some time progresses in the RP.

Hey guys, I was looking to make an app for this, but I'm having a problem with the ratio of Military size to population, does anyone know a good percentage?

Hmm, I wouldn't say at war normally, but is kind of a Communist Dictatorship, so it tends to stockpile on it's military and try to build a large one, compared to it's population (54 million core, 1 million colonial.). So, in an easier way, a large military compared to the population :P.

Playing this RP? Thought it was a very interesting concept. But with that comment, I was just wondering what was a good percent of your population to have as your military.

For a more militarized society 1-2% would be pretty good I think.

Briefly describe your nation's political system and structure: The President serves as both the non-voting Speaker of the Senate and as the head of state, being elected every 5 years. He has the power to veto bills from the Senate (which can be overturned by a 2/3rds vote), Request a declaration of War, Command the Armed Forces, and maintains control of the Federal Government. The Senate holds the power of the pocket book, has the power to raise and levy taxes and tariffs, create post offices and courts, and declare war. Each Senator is elected for a term of 5 years. Each state (California, Nevada, and the Four Corners) have 5 Senators each, creating a total of 30 voting members and 14 non-voting members for the Territories.
Briefly describe your nation's economic system and current state: The Economy is a Free-Market Capitalist system. Large Manufacturing Corporations, such as: North American, Lockheed, Grumman, Chevalier Automotive, Chryslus, Corvega, Grumman, Republic, Consolidated, Boeing, Vultee, and Douglas; currently lead the economy, generating millions of dollars for the economy every year. This is combined with large resource corporations such as Chevron and the service industries that follow them, creating an extremely large mixed economy. Though economic growth is slowed, it has proved to be fairly stable and still generates a safe amount of money for the nation's economy to continue to prosper.
Briefly describe your nation's population (political views, opinion of the government, happiness, etc.): The dominant Political Party is currently the Constitution Party, led by President Warren. Though the lack of growth in the economy has been criticized by the minority, the Democratic Socialists, the public remains largely behind the Constitution Party. Public Attitudes about the government are mostly positive and trusting along with a modertly happy population.
Briefly describe your nation's history since our point of departure (POD): The Mexican Empire opens up settlement by Americans to Arizona, New Mexico, California, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. When Texas began its revolution in October of 1835, Settlers in the Southwest, feeling many of the same effects of the centralist Mexican Government, began its own insurrection. Texian volunteers begin to organize the Insurrectionists into a force that mostly mirrored Sam Houston's Army. The Southwestern Army, as it was christened, was able to inflict a number of defeats on President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's spread thin Mexican Army at around the same time as Sam Houston's force inflicted a major defeat at San Jacinto, forcing the Mexican Empire out of the region almost entirely. A group of Californian men, leading a movement to not join the Republic of Texas established a Constitution and created the newest nation on the North American continent. 1848 saw another Mexican Invasion of Texas and the Southwestern Confederacy, the union of the Four Corners, Nevada, and California. This unsuccesful invasion resulted in reparations such as the turning over of much of Northern Mexico to the Confederacy's in 1853, following a highly successful Military campaign through Baja and "leap frogging" down Mexico's Western Coast.

National Attributes (Passive): Breadbasket; Five-Year Plan
National Attribute (Active): Jingoism

Briefly describe your nation's political system and structure: At the top is the Caliph, the hereditary position of the Al-Baelgoi dynasty. The Caliph is the supreme leader in the name of Allah, able to dismiss the Assembly and Cabinet whenever he sees fit. The Assembly is formed of four hundred popularly-elected ministers. From their ranks, ten ministers are elected from within the Assembly to act as a Cabinet for the Caliph. They do not the power to enact laws, however they do have the power to decide what bills may be proposed to the Caliph for approval. The Cabinet is elected each year, with every minister elected every five years.
Briefly describe your nation's economic system and current state: The economic system revolves around the state-controlled oil-and-gas industry, which provides roughly half of the country's GDP. It is a very lucrative business, supplying the black gold to all neighboring countries at high rates which has allowed the Caliphate to grow in leaps and bounds. The agricultural industry has itself been able to rapidly expand due to the money brought in by the energy industry. Modernisation and industrialisation has seen the village farms become very productive food-centers, capable of not only feeding the masses but also in exporting to other countries. Although the industrial sector is still flagging far behind other countries, it is growing at a steady rate, fueled by renewed vigor and government money.
Briefly describe your nation's population: For a Sunni majority, there is a Sunni dominated government, providing a guiding hand in times of question and a symbol of hope during crisis. The Jewish communities are ruthlessly persecuted, so much so that almost all have been removed from the country. The notable exclusion is the community of Gaza, who have been granted semi-autocracy for their actions during the Egypt-Arab War of 1812. The Shia populace are a large minority of the country, and as such have not been persecuted as mercilessly as the Jews. However that is not to say that they have been allowed to live unaided. Indeed, at the best of times relationships between Sunni and Shia are professional. Since there is a lot of economical potential in the Caliphate, as well as the fact that it is the most stable nation in the sub-continent, the Shia see no reason to leave.
Briefly describe your nation's history since our point of departure: Refusing to face the Ottomans at Chaldiran, Shah Ismail was able to watch as the Sultan Selim was forced to withdraw before his army completely disbanded. On the retreat, the Persian forces brought them to battle, inflicting a humiliating defeat and causing the Ottomans to give up large swathes of land and caravans full of gold in return for their Sultan. An uneasy peace lasted for nigh on five years before a vengeful Sultan returned for revenge. With no threat of a two-front war, Shah Ismail was able to bring together a large army in order to face the Ottomans. Now willing to fight at Chaldiran, the Persian cavalry destroyed the Ottoman artillery before it could devastate the Persian infantry. A short clash, the battle was a strategic and political victory for Ismail, seeing Selim falling back before his army could disintegrate. This was quickly followed by the costly victory at the Battle of Söğüt, where Selim and several prominent generals were captured or killed. This would be the final large-scale land battle fought between the Ottomans and Persians, although three years of guerrilla and siege warfare waited the victors in eastern Anatolia.
With the Ottomans turning their attention to Eastern Europe, the Safavids expanded south, annexing Egypt and large swaths of North Africa, the Barbary States kneeling after the threat of facing the ever-victorious Persian armies.
Safavids at their greatest extent
Several decades passed, the Persians fighting tooth and nail to try and hold on to their far-reaching domains. However, political strife between various claimants within the Safavid royal family saw regions declaring independence or indeed, in the case of the small island Malta, seceding to the Italian Kingdom of Sicily. What made matters worse, during the 17th Century the Shia Muslims, ever a minority even if the ruling dynasty was of their faith, saw the most violent overthrows in history. Lead by the now world-known Caliph Jaela, the rebels - Sunni Arabs, Persians, Ottomans, Jews and Christians - gathered together a vast army and laid siege to Isfahan. A royalist army did attempt to face the rebels in battle, however they did not succeed in either relieving the defenders or rescuing the royal family. Once the walls fell, the entire Shia populace was wiped out. Named ruler by a body of Imams, Jaela went on a seven year Jihad within the former Safavid Empire, butchering hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslims in order to cement his rule.
The newly raised Al-Baelgoi dynasty would continue a line unstopped until the present day for rule over the Caliphate. Although they would lose the Barbary States to rebellion and mismanagement, most of modern-day Turkey to nationalism, Egypt to an ambitious younger cousin, and the eastern lands to war, the central heartlands would remain staunch vassals of the Al-Baelgoi. They did remain a backwards country until the aftermath of the Egypt-Arab War fought in the early years of the 19th Century.
Fought between Hussein Al-Baegoi, Emir-Governor of Egypt and his cousin Muhammad Al-Baelgoi, Caliph of Persia, the war lasted two decades, involving not only the Near and Middle-Eastern countries and kingdoms, but also the former Persian territories of North Africa, Malta and Crete. Hundreds of thousands died in the war which ended in stalemate, both countries reeling like prize-boxers, too exhausted to launch another punch. It was this war which spurred on the eventual industrial revolution, bringing in Westerners to oversee great constructions which mirrored that seen in the vast factories of Europe.

Are Siberia and Korea claimed? I'd love to lay claim to those, if I could.

Siberia, possibly, Korea, nope :).
You're average kind fellow, who secretly runs an oppressive dictatorship on a brilliant website. Love it.
