HIS 111: COURSE SYLLABUSProfessor: Garwall
Teaching Assistant: None
Course Description: HIS 111, or a Study in Alternative History, will explore the potential functioning of an alternative history created by the class's participants. Students will create individual nations and lead them through an ever-changing social, political and diplomatic environment, modeled after the world state in 1940.
Course Rules:
- Students will respect one another and act accordingly outside of their respective nations' roles.
- Students will respect the determined Point of Departure from historical reality, set at the year 1492.
- Students will remain within the realm of plausibility and avoid taking the role of 'God' in respect to other nations' activities.
- Students are expected to attend class and will be held accountable for faulty attendance.
Grading: Students will be graded upon a number of factors, ranging from attendance to term papers to their performance on various assignments. Any student who fails to score satisfactory on one or more projects, or fails to attend class will be removed from the course immediately and without notice.
Course Assignments: For this course, three projects will be assigned and will form the majority of the student's grade. The first assignment will be to create a nation in an alternate timeline, complete with demographics information and a brief historical overview. The second project will be a collaberation by the students to create an overall history generated by the nations they have created from the first project. The third will be a narrative interaction between nations created by the students. Although ultimately a group project, participants will be graded individually.
PROJECT I: CREATE YOUR NATION
Due Date: (To be determined)
Objective: To create a nation to exist within a custom timeframe determined by the course's participants.
Rules: To ensure proper and fair world-building, a set of rules and guidelines will be established in which your nation is expected to meet in order to maintain a passing grade. See below for more information on specific sections.
Point-of-Departure and Alternate History: Any historical events after the year 1492 are open for changing and alteration, however one must be mindful of how these alterations will change the histories of other nations outside of simply their own, as well as the plausibility of the alterations. Resurrecting certain nations such as the Roman or Mongol empires at this point are unlikely to occur, and any/all major changes must be justified. Students are encouraged to collaborate to create histories that compliment one another and set the stage for future projects.
Land claims and Disputes: Conflicting territorial claims by players in the process of creating their nations are encouraged to be handled without teacher intervention. However, in scenarios where no settlement can be achieved, the territory in question will be carved in to a neutral nation divided between the influence of the contesting nations. Additionally, large claims may be reduced if considered overpowered or implausible. In scenarios where a large nation is disputing territory also claimed by a much smaller nation, teacher intervention may lean on the side of the smaller nation in the name of balance.
Point system and National Attributes: In order to provide some contextual comparisons between nations, a points system will be used to measure a nation's important attributes. This is simply to indicate in which areas your nation places a high emphasis, rather than a tool to determine any specific qualities of a nation. You will have a total of 30 points to allocate. The point system is described as follows:
Additionally, all nations will select three National Attribues that impact a nation by specifically directing their focus of development. These attributes impart a specific bonus that may turn the tide in your favor in some situations, but will not always save you from the depths of despair. Two of these will be passive abilities that will impart a constant bonus for your nation, while the third will be a one-time active use ability that can be triggered at any point to impart a specific bonus. In regards to the military weaponry of your nations, you will be allowed free selection of equipment up to 1945. Note, however, that equipment developed later (1943-1945) will not become available for use until some time has passed in the IC.
