It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. It's utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more

INTRODUCTION

Ever since the Great Age of Myths had ended during what the mundane world called the Middle Ages, when supernatural beings and individuals, threatened by the encroaching spirits of Reason and Science, hid themselves from the eyes of mundane humanity, continuing their existence in covert ways. The Masquerade was born.

Truth be told, the supernatural world wasn't put in jeopardy by this phenomenon, for the most part.

Vampires continued to rule the night, even with curtailed blood supplies, and sired new children of the kindred for ages to come. The werewolf clans prowled forests and steppes, balancing their wild nature with the need of mantaing a covert identity. Mages' Lodges and Witch covens proceeded undisturbed in practising their craft, like they always did. Other beings, like faeries and other spirits, preferred to remain dormant and completely secluded from human society.

The supernatural world still continued to influence the mundane one, in a barely perceptible way. Of course, not every revolution in the history of man had been secretely engineered by ancient arch-wizards, and not every famous monarch was in cohorts with vampiric beings, but the forces of occult still tried to model human history to some degree.

The Great War wasn't really their doing, however. The Mage Lodges of Europe didn't really see any value in the bloody product of years of squabbles between the noblemen of Austria-Hungary and Imperial Germany and the post-Jacobins of France, the Vampire kindred lamented the loss of so much fresh blood, and the werewolf clans were bothered by the crescent industrialization of their lands.

No one, not even them, could have foreseen the results of that conflict.

In the space of a few decades Germany, humiliated and stripped of its Imperial garbs, would have started its supreme revenge against her victors. Powered by the ambitious visions of an Austrian war vet turned politician, the German nation had adopted the National Socialist ideology, an explicitly racialist and anti-Bolshevik creed owing much to its Italian-born sister, Fascism.

Months of compromises and diplomacy on the part of Europe's foremost democratic powers, Britain and France, wouldn't have accomplished nothing. Germany swallowed Austria first and Czechoslovakia second, while building up her war machine and finding like-minded allies in Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan.

As this happened, the supernatural world itself came to a split: Germania Lodge, the regulating authority of Germany's magical community, revealed the details of its craft and of the fabled Vril-ya magicry to the ruling cadre of the Third Reich. The vampires and werewolf clans of the country soon followed suit. Their motivation varied: some were in it for the power, some for blood, and some, and many of them at that, had simply been raptured into the nationalistic Aryan ideal of purity, which wasn't very extraneous to many members of the supernatural world. The most prominent leaders and individuals in Germany's supernatural underground joined the ranks of what came to be called the "Inner Circle".

The Masquerade had been broken.

Powered by occult forces and experimental technology, the Nazi War Machine began a continent-wide campaign of conquest in September 1939. Poland was the first to fall, as the German Wehrmacht shocked the world with its gigantic tanks, walking war machines and exotic ray weaponry. Meanwhile, the armies of Imperial Japan, similarly aided by occult forces, continued their unmatched conquest of eastern Asia.

After Poland, it was the time for Denmark and Norway to fall, with Sweden falling prey to a Nazi to a Nazi-simpathizer government. The Germans plowed through the Ardennes forest, sidestepping the Maginot line and bringing havoc to Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and their main target, France. For the first time in the war, the supernatural population of an invaded country tried to participate in the defense effort, in some way or another. They didn't succeed, but the fall of France taught an harsh but valuable lesson to Great Britain and the other members of the multinational coalition which came to be called the Allies: they needed to take advantage of whatever the Nazis were using to boost their war machine to dramatic levels.

Image

The supernatural inhabitants of Allies-aligned countries gladly welcomed this call for help, for the most part, feeling threatened by the genocidal fury that had apparently invested their Axis-aligned "relatives". The Grand Mage Lodge of Albion first achieved contact with the British government in 1940, just after the narrow escape of the British Expeditionary Force in Dunkerque. Sending eccentric Arch Mage Alister Crowley as their representative, the Lodge managed to open a stable diplomatic channel with newly elected British PM Winston Churchill. Crowley proceeded to inform Churchill about the supernatural world in its finest details, touching on issues regarding the Masquerade and its recent breach on part of Germany's supernatural community, and the need for Britain and other Allied powers to start taking advantage of their own occult arsenal.

The results of this historic meeting would be vital for the survival of the UK. Through the framework of the SOE, Britain started recruiting volunteers from its wealthy occult underground. Mages, witches, vampires and werewolves alike joined the ranks of commando teams employed in what were dubbed "Shadow Ops": secret operations aimed at occult enemy targets which weren't enough for mundane special forces to handle. Always in Britain, the ancient knightly order known as the Round Table resurfaced, supplying the state with its members, skilled hand-to-hand warriors using enchanted weaponry and plate armor. Many supernatural individuals were also recruited from other nations of the Empire.

This proved to be a great boon to Britain: when the Axis finally attempted an aerial invasion of the Isles through the use of massive Zeppellin transport craft, it found itself repelled by an unexpectedly prepared Britain and her arsenal of state-of-the-art aircraft, Witch squadrons and counter-magic spells. Operation Seeloewe, the Nazi plan to swiftly end any opposition to their reign in Europe, had failed.

Even after the British triumph, the war continued to stall. By 1941, Britain found herself locked into battle with Germany and Italy for the control of her territories in Africa, still suffering from enduring German bombing blitzes on her major cities. Meanwhile, on the other side of Europe, the uneasy secret non-belligerance pact between Nazi Germany and the USSR came to a swift end after the former invaded Soviet land as a part of what came to be called Operation Barbarossa.

The USSR, a communist dictatorship led by a Georgian-born follower of the late Vladimir Lenin, found itself put at a great disadvantage by Germany's occult-powered military. In the precedent decades, the materialistic Bolshevik governments of the USSR had purged the majority of its supernatural population, fearing their hostility to the revolutionary ideals and attachment to old, reactionary traditions.

Even then, the Soviets had since found a completely party-compliant way to solve their lack of supernatural beings: Psionics. Russian researcher Semion Davidovich Kirlian discovered in the 30s that all material objects possessed an aura which could be manipulated by some humans with a particular set of neural abilities, permitting them to access the power of reading minds, moving objects with their thought and other psionic feats, without having to resort to magic.

The USSR used their psionics research and other bizzarre, scientifical weaponry to face the German invasion, leading to long and bloody battles. Even then, the harsh conditions the country versed in forced Stalin to collaborate with Britain and Free France's Shadow Ops programs, pooling their own talent in the shared Allied assets.

However, 1941 would have ended with a last unexpected surprise. An happening which shocked a whole nation, and may have definitely changed the course of the war.

Under the directions of Congress, The United States of America had remained sharply isolationist in foreign policy since Hitler had taken power in Germany, much to the chagrin of President Roosevelt, an outspoken opponent of the Nazi regime. The Mages' Grand Lodge of the Americas itself preferred to remain neutral, not wanting to get caught up in Albion and Germania Lodge's conflict.

This isolationism ended on 7 December 1941, when the Imperial Japanese Navy, aided by mysterious seaborne creatures, laid waste to the US Navy base in Pearl Harbour as a part of an attack aimed at crippling the capabilities of the US Pacific Fleet, the only possible opponent to Japanese naval dominance in the Pacific. The Day of Infamy spelt the end of US isolationism and the awakening of a sleeping giant.

The US officially entered the war on the side of the allies, supplying its large arsenal, technological and magical, to the war effort. Other than the array of American supernatural individuals and creatures recruited into Shadow Ops squads, the US also revealed the product of a series of secret pre-war experiments: the Minuteman supersoldiers, men of unbreakable will and immense strength who voluntereed to have their physical abilities boosted to superhuman levels.

By the end of 1941, the war had finally reached its top momentum. Shadow Ops Commandos, composed by mundane and supernatural individuals of every nationality, creed and even gender and ethnicity possible regularly undertook dangerous mission deep in Axis territory, facing the dangerous spawn of the forces of occult and of perverted Nazi science.

This is the story of one of such squads, fighting a war beyond simple human comprehension.

A war...that lit the World On Fire.

Inhabitants of a World On Fire

VAMPIRES:The Red Progeny of Cain

Call them Caininites, Antediluvians or Strigoi, Vampires remain one of the most ancient species on the planet, claiming descendance from the Biblical Cain himself. Lore aside, they're certainly the apex predators of the supernatural world: blood-sucking creatures bestowed with unnatural strength and resilience, incapable of aging, agile and able in hiding their true identity from unwary mundanes. Vampires possess elongable, sharp canine fangs which can rapidly burrow in the veins of a living being and suck them dry, even though most vampires will just savour a few gallons before detaching themselves from their prey. Completely drying a victim will transform them into a ghoul, a walking corpse prone to violence and with a taste for human flesh, only to decay in the span of a week.

Vampires need blood to survive and mantain a youthless appearance. The sources can vary, and vampires tend to have some favourite ones. Werewolf blood, or the blood of a particularly special human, are considered delicatessen by vampires. The former usually whips them into a crazed state reminescent of the one of an hard drug user. Other than that, blood is also consumed by vampires when healing from wounds or regenerating lost limbs, or when using the common vampiric ability of turning into fine mists or swarms of bats. Speaking of which, a vampire can be killed only when decapitated AND staked in the heart. Simply committing only one of the two actions will merely put the vampire in a state of slumber up until the stake is removed or the head is re-attached. Alternatively, vampires will quickly decay into dust when completely drained of their blood reserves, either in the space of a few nights, or instantly if exposed to a direct source of sunlight.

Sunlight doesn't kill vampires. It weakens their powers and highlights their proverbial paleness and other features which can give off their real identity when examined by a trained eye. Other weaknesses include cold iron and silver which, either in the form of weapons or bullets, will provoke deep and hard-to-heal wounds, albeit not directly killing them. Garlic can scramble an untrained vampire's senses and throw them in a status of confusion. Finally, vampires have a very cat-like relationship with water, and prefer to sleep into enclosed spaces surrounded by homeland soil, which is apparently quite relaxing for them.

Vampires have inert genitals, and reproduce by introducing a little quantity of their own blood in the bloodstream of a feeding victim, which will be turned into a vampire in the space of a few weeks. Fledgling vampires are usually in a weakened state, and need large quantities succor from their vampiric progenitors before eventually becoming accustomed to their new condition and learning to hunt for their own blood. Due to this, vampires tend to sire only a single "child" at the time, which is one of the main reasons for their dwindling numbers.

Vampires have a dynastic hierarchy, with a Vampiric Progenitor of multiple Vampiric Children ruling over what is called a "Countship", consisting in himself, their Children, dignitaries and assorted allies and based in a given territory. Famed Count Vlad Tepes ruled one of the most active Countships in Europe before being killed in Britain by a group of vampire hunters led by Doctor Van Helsing.
Vampires are a competitive race, prone to get in territorial conflicts with rival vampires, and with werewolves, their natural opponents. They're generally ambivalent towards humans, seeing them mostly as a simple source of nourishment or, in the case of Mages and Witches, as people to keep themselves away from. That said, "animal-only" or simply filoanthropic vampires aren't that uncommon.

Axis-aligned vampires mostly come from Countships in Germany, Romania and Hungary. They are mostly motivated by a mix of racial supremacistic views towards other supernatural beings, a wish to see the "impure" vampires of other countries perish, and pure bloodlust. Allied-aligned vampires come from multiple countries, mostly the US and France (Great Britain once had a sizeable population, but it dwindled after Dracula generated an anti-vampire scare in the late 19th Century. British vampires still exist, and they don't exactly think greatly of hunters). American vampires are usually stereotyped as particularly sociable, much less stuffy and carefree than their continental brethren. A common stereotype is, for some reason, Cajun or otherwise New Orleansian heritage. French ones are instead seen as an aristocratic, somewhat decadent and self-centered bunch of snobs, likely to have some deep-seated ills against the Garou.

Adept at stealth and powerhouses in close combat, Vampires are a vital component of Shadow Ops commando teams. They're usually forced to become accustomed to the idea of working in close contact with werewolves.

WEREWOLVES: The Wrath of Primordial Nature

The theories on the origin of Were-kind are quite controversial. Many clans claim heritage from ancient Moon deities, others think of themselves as manifestations of the mythical personification of nature, Gaia, and some Mages even think of them as a missing step in humankind's evolution. No one can be sure.

At their core, werewolves and other werecreatures are humans cursed (or gifted, depending on what you think of it) with the peculiar condition of periodically transforming into humanoid wolf-men possessing absurd strength, inhuman resilience and an imperishable rage.
A common misconception is that werewolves transform only under the full moon. Rather, this is only the period of time when a transformation is more likely. Werewolf can attempt to transform whenever in eye contact with lunar light, or when enduring heavy stress and emotional trauma.

Speaking of which, werewolves have three main forms: their human one, the wolf-man form, and the wolf form. The last one turns the werewolf into an oversized but otherwise normally looking wolf. The bestial forms are very hard to control, but werewolves can at least distinguish allies from enemies, provided they marked them before.Even in their human form, werewolves tend to be uncommonly hairy, or at least have some sharp, almost lupine features, like a long and thin nose, almost pointy ears. They age at a slower pace than normal humans, but contrary to vampires, can actually die of old age. Werewolves can either reproduce sexually (the curse is also hereditary) or carry out the curse by biting someone and leaving them alive during a full moon night.

Werewolves can theoretically be killed like normal living beings, but their resistant hide will turn most weapon fire and blade cuts into simple flesh wounds. However, silver bullets happen to penetrate their skin very well, and can be lethal if they reach vital organs. Untrained Werewolves can be confused or drugged to sleep with extracts from the plant known as wolfsbane, and will instantaneously be knocked back into an human form if they ever happen to be knocked unconscious during combat.

Werewolves can regenerate lost limbs, albeit in an unusual manner: if maimed when in bestial form, the wolf will regenerate their lost limbs when turning back into their human form, and will too retain them during any subsequent transformation to a bestial form. Their favourite diet consists in raw meat consumed in bestial form.

Wolves live together in Clans led by an Alpha, usually the strongest, wisest or oldest werewolf in the clan. Clans, in a similar way to vampire Countships, behave like enlarged families striking a claim to a territory. While vampires usually prefer establishing their territories in urban areas, werewolves prefer the rural country and the backwoods. Like the rest of the supernatural world, they are often involved in conflicts for the control of new turf or to repay blood debts with rival Clans, or vampires. Just like their enemies, they harbor a distrust or even fear towards Mages, Witches and other human practitioners of the occult. Faeries and other natural spirits are probably the only supernatural beings the Clans respect.

Solitary werewolves are not uncommon. These lone wolves tend to either be crazed killers who rebelled to tight Clan laws on consumption of human beings (most Clans limit or even ban it, fearing repercussions by Hunters), or young werewolves seeking to form a new clan, or just try and live like the humans do.

Axis-aligned werewolves mostly hail from the Clans of the Black Forest, headed by the pro-Nazi Schwarzwald Clan. The werewolves of Schwarzwald are infamous for their violent tactics, human meat consumption and their outspoken belief of the natural inferiority of non-German clans. They commonly adopt Norse lore in their rituals, and worship the mythical wolf Fenris as a god-like figure. Italy's werewolves clans are instead headed by the Sons of Mars, Roman Empire aficionados.

Allies-aligned werewolves come from a wealth of countries. Of note are the Garous of France, the Scots-Irish Armstrong Clan (present in cadet branches in American and Australian territory) , the Wendigos of Canada, the Bunyips of Australia and several different clans in the continental US, either descending from European or Native American werewolf clans.

Other werecreatures also exist in secluded parts of the world: the Soviets almost entirely purged the werebear clans of Rus', now rumoured to be hiding deep in Siberian woods. Meanwhile, some even talk of ancients clans of "jaguar-men" living deep in the jungles of Yucatan, in Allies-aligned Mexico...

With their physical prowess and endurance, other than a fine attunement to nature (werewolves have a very sharp sense of smell and some degree of night vision), werewolves too are vital members in Shadow Ops commando squads. They'll be usually reluctant to work next to vampires and hunters of their own kind.

MAGES: Scholars Of The Occult

"Mage" derives from the Latin Magus, feminine form Maga, plural form Magi. Originally a term used to designate Oriental wise men, it eventually became a catch all term for the human practitioners of magic arts. Magi are individuals that, either due to heredity or pure chance, can manipulate and bend the fabric of reality by using the all-permeating life force known as Mana or Prana.

Magecraft is a deeply varied field: its applications are multiple, ranging from elemental magic, to illusionism, alchemy, summoning sorcery, runic magic, necromancy and other secret arts. Mages are also divided over deep cultural and ethnic lines. Here are the main ones, which made the most impact in WW2.

Hermetic Magic

When someone says "Magus", they're most likely speaking about followers of Hermetes Trismegistus' philosophy of magic: the rational, scientific pursuit of deeper knowledge about the fundamental elements of the world and the further refination and development of the techniques of Magecraft. With its roots in the magical traditions of Roman Europe, influenced by the ones of the Near East and ancient Egypt, Hermetist Magic is currently the most practised form of Magecraft in the Western World.

Before the Masquerade, Hermetic Magi acted as advisors and court wizards for mythic heroes and kings. Surely you must have heard of Merlin Ambrosius. They often had a deep influence in politics and public matter, which endured even after the start of the Masquerade. After all, mages are humans at heart: they really can't help it.

Hermetic Magic consists of carefully constructed spells (rigorously in Latin), wands to better direction and channel Prana, words of power uttered to launch spells or boost existing ones. Spells are constructed from a basic Latin forums, highlighting the nature of the spell, its functions and its modus operandi. As such, a great workload is spent carefully memorising formulas and sequences, and developing quick or useful constructions. That said, everyone always resorts to the simple "Creo Ignis" (Make Fire) in one moment or another.

Hermetic Magi group themselves in individual ateliers and workshops, which are governed by provincial lodges, which in turn are governed by regional lodges and finally by national Grand Lodges. This complex framework is supposed to provide a mutual platform for mages to pursue their research undisturbed, without breaching the Masquerade, and providing security from internal rivalries. They haven't always succeeded in their propositions. Grand Lodges are directed by a council of Arch Mages ceremonially presided by a Magister or Grand Mage.

Hermetists put great emphasis on study. Young members of Magi bloodlines are either raised and educated in their own household, or sent to study in Lodge-approved institutions. Stereotypically, a perfect Hermetic Mage is workaholic, quantitative, cynical and snobbish. Alchemists regularly boast that their particular field is particularly hard due to having to take account of hard chemistry in addition to the usual amount of physics and metaphysics involved in Magecraft.

Hermetics are present all over Western Europe and in many territories of the British Empire. Axis-aligned Magi belong to the Grand Lodges of Germania and Italia, the former being more prestigious than the latter. Germania is famed for its specialization in runic magic, alchemy and for continuing their research on the ancient Vril-ya civilization and their long-lost Vril energy.. It is headed by Archmagus Karl Maria Wiligut.

The Allies can count on the historic Grand Lodge of Albion, which is currently one of the pivotal institutions in the occult war between the two alliances. It is led by the Ambrosius (a ceremonial title for Magister) Ernest Arthur Rowling, and his close advisor and right-hand man Aleister Crowley. Historically, Albion had covertly influenced Britain's rise to power in the 19th Century, working to stamp out indigenous magic beliefs in the colonies. The Grand Lodge supervises and mantains several magical academis in the Isles and in other Commonwealth territories.

Other important Grand Lodges are the ones of Gallia (France), currently split between the Free French and Vichy forces, and the Grand Lodge of America Septentrionalis (or just North America), famous for the unorthodox tactics and behaviour assumed by its members, derisively called Colonials by Albion mages. Albion also mantains a presence in South Africa, India, Australia and the Japanese-occupied British territories of Hong Kong and Singapore.

Hebrew Kabbalah
The ethnical, hereditary mysticism of the Jewish people is known as Kabbalah, a system of formulas and concepts meant to aid Rabbis and their Yeshiva students in the process of understanding and controlling the secrets of YHWH's emanations in the living universe. By using the mathematical science known as Gematria, Kabbalists are capable of understanding the true nature and name of a given object or element, and bend it to their will. Famously, the Jewish Rabbis of Europe focused on and mastered the manipulation of clay, the perfect mixture between liquid water and solid earth, and used it to animate living beings known as Golems. The capability of shaping and animating objects and inert materials into living beings is the most unique thing about Kabbalah, something which no other magical tradition has ever achieved, but which many have desired.

As such, the Hermetics of Europe always harboured a deep envy and distrust towards Jewish magicians, angry for their incapability to fully access the concepts of the Tree of Life and fearing that the Hebrew people could have easily raised armies which would have destroyed all the Lodges of Europe. Even then, Kabbalah prospered in the Jewish ghettos and sthetls of the past, and a little part of it was exported to faraway lands in the most recent centuries. Kabbalistic rabbis were often accused of creating human-like golems to further secret aims of conquest and domination over gentiles, hiding behind their apparently pacifistic and reserved natures.

Hermetists considered them outsiders and banished them from lodges, openly permitting other Hermetic mages to try and steal Kabbalistic secrets or even attempt assassinassions on Rabbis and their yeshivas. This enmity endured up to the mid 19th century, but resumed in the aftermath of WW1. With the rise of Nazism and the subsequent Backstab Myth popularized by Hitler's party, Jews and kaballists by extensions became open target for crimes and injuries motivated by hate or opportunism.

As of 1941, most European kaballists are missing. Reports flow from Poland about "death camps" were Jewish prisoners are starved and worked to death, or sent off to "industrialized killing chambers", which may also house captured Kaballists. The Allied High Command has been mostly dismissing them as exaggerations made by a tired and helpless Polish Resistance in an attempt to get further aid against Nazi occupation, but the overnight detainment and disappearance of many Jews has raised some degree of suspicion among Allied ranks.

Some Kaballists serve in the Shadow Ops squads, mostly hailing from American yeshivas, or refugees from Nazi persecution in the European mainland.

Vril Energy

Vril Energy is the long-lost magical power source of the fabled Vril-ya subterranean people of Hyperborea-Thule. An highly advanced civilization, possibly descending from the people of Atlantis, the Vril-ya refuged themselves in the depths of the Earth after an unknown calamity, their traces lost forever. Germania Lodge mages first, and the Nazis themselves later have tried multiple times to find the access to the subterannean kingdom of the Vril-ya and its capital Agarthi with several expeditions. The results were mixed, but apparently some German magi managed to find a way to produce Vril or at least extract it from the underground and make use of it. Vril-powered vehicles and weaponry are a commonf feature of the wonderweapons in the occult-empowered Axis military.

Vril practitioners, if they even exist, use staves imbued with great destructive power. If they actually exist, they're probably firmly on the side of the Germans.

Onmyodo
Onmyoji are the Japanese equivalent of Mages. The practitioners of this oriental art make use of rectangles of paper called Ofuda, imbued with Japanese inscriptions which permit them to cast protect wards, offensive spells or even summon the natural guardian spirits known as Shikigami. They also make use of Kujin, words of power which can strengthen the force of a blow or generate pranatic blasts.

Onmyodo practitioners are a regular feature in the occult forces of Imperial Japan.

Ki-Based Martial Arts
Martial Arts are present in multiple cultures around the world. However, in China and in other far eastern countries these fearsome fighting techniques also carried a deep spiritual, mystic and philosophical baggage. Secluded monastic orders like the Shaolin took it one step further, and integrated a particular form of close-ranged magecraft in their own styles, focused on the manipulation of the pranatic force known as Ki or Chi. Usually, Ki is manifested in the form of augmented blows or blasts of projected energy. Another common technique is the use of special physical pressure points to trigger painful reactions in a target.

Martial Artists are common in the ranks of Allied countries like China, Indochina and Vietnam, and some of them even found their way to Shadow Ops squads.

Spiritual Magic/Shamanism
Shamanism refers to all the traditions pertaining the primordial worship of nature and its forces, be it Druidic paganism, Native American totemism or Russian folk magic. All forms of Magecraft rooted in these ancient rituals are part of the label. Shamans have largely gone extinct in Europe, but they thrive in Native American and First People reserves, in Yucatan and the Amazons, in the Aboriginal homelands in the Australian outback, in various parts of French and British Africa and in some parts of the USSR.

Shamanism is looked down by adherents to Hermetic magic, and considered an uncultured and primitive brand of Magecraft. Sometimes, more organized but still exotic forms of magic, like many Oriental traditions, are derisively referred to as Shamanism.

Chtonic Knowledge
Not much is known about Chtonic Magecraft, a term invented by the American magus and novella writer H.P. Lovecraft. A professor of the Miskatonic Magical Institute in New England, Lovecraft developed articulate theories (or ramblings, if you want to think of them as that) about ancient extraterrestrial gods sleeping in the depths of the ocean and their imminent and catastrophic return.

The Grand Lodge of America eventually fired him, both tired and disturbed by his ideas. After Lovecraft tried to distribute them to mundanes through the use of novels and short stories, the Grand Lodge decided to authorise an hit on him to avoid breaking the Masquerade. Lovecraft was implanted with an experimental alchemical toxin, which would have covertly broken his body down in a period of time.

Lovecraft inexplicably survived the effects of the toxin, and disappeared from public life. A Lodge raid on his home found it unoccupied, its library almost completely emptied. Most importantly, a large pedestal made from what seemed to be human bones was laid in the centre of the room, apparently the former shrine of a tome greatly prized by the mysterious magus...

All in all, mages, with their particular set of abilities and useful magical knowledge are another vital part of Shadow Ops squads. Hermetic ones are likely to harbour an haughty or highly dignified opinion of themselves, and look down upon mundanes and other supernatural alike. Hermetists don't blend well with Witches, but they're at least on speaking terms.

WITCHES: Magical Maidens of the Pagan Nights

The origin of Witches is shrouded in antiquity. Ever since the dawn of civilization, female priestesses and shamans from all parts of the Western World paid tribute to the ancient forces of nature and to the ancestral magics that resided in them. Be them Greek, Celtic, Italian or from somewhere else, the progenitors of modern witches continued to practise their peculiar form of nature magic even with the encroaching shadow of Christianity looming over them and defaming them as satanic worshippers or devious occultists.

Witchcraft is inherently feminine, qualitative, communitarian and grounded into a spiritualistic view of magic and its connotations. This puts it at odds with the cold, harsh scientific nature of Hermetic Magecraft and the individualistic outlook of many of its practitioners. Witches will take great offense if mistook for a female Maga, and the reverse will also happen.

Witches organize themselves in Covens, groups of highly variable sizes which are usually bound together by close familiar, emotive and/or social ties. Covens in Europe are usually governed by an inner council of elder witches, while American covens adopt a democratical, meeting-based structure. Covens offer refuge, mentoring and supplies to its members, and preside over the weekly Sabbath feast, and seasonal holidays such as Beltane, also called Walpurgisnacht in mainland Europe.

Similarly to mages, witches inherit their magical attunement from their parents. Unlike Magecraft, Witchcraft's focus is not on bending and manipulating nature to do one's bidding, but collaborating with it to reach a common goal. As such, they usually excel in elemental magic, potion brewing and in animal husbandry. Notably, almost every witch possesses a familiar, a benevolent, loyal servant spirit which takes the form of a mundane animal. Cats and ravens are especially popular. Witches are renowned for their ability to fly through the use of specially treated brooms. A veteran witch's flying speed can rival the one of a modern Spitfire fighter plane.

Due to their pagan origins, many Witches have a distrusting or even somewhat hostile attitude towards Abrahamic faiths such as Christianity, due to an history of persecution and defamation at the hands of both Catholics and Protestants alike. Even then, Christian witches are not an oddity: the pagan Witch Cult, with its emphasis on the Golden Rule analogue called the Rede, can be sharply syncretic in religious matters. Even if it is mostly considered a smear dating back to the Middle Ages, the claim that Witches are Satan-worshippers is not always untrue: several fringe groups and covens have incorporated an ominous devotion to Christianity's daemonical adversary, out of a want of revenge against the abuse suffered by Witchdom during the ages. Most mainstream covens take an highly dim view of such Luciferian cults.

Outside of their coven lives, Witches, just like Magi, are encouraged to also live a more mundane, ordinary lifestyle. Their usually free-spirited, gently rural outlook on romantic matters has been the material of quite many bawdy folk songs. Witches stereotypically wear pointy hats and dark or earth-toned colours, but it's not always the case.

The witches of the Western World are divided in several different agglomerates of covens. Of note is the Scandinavian-Germanic one of Central Europe, one of the oldest in the world, along with the neighbouring Italian and French ones. British withcraft, while similar to Germanic one, is even less Christianized and puts a major emphasis on ancient traditional customs such as the Beltane festival. American witches instead come from a mixed Germano-British cultural heritage, mixed with influences from the mundane world of the colonies. A sharply American version of Beltane is usually performed every May Day in the renowned town of Salem.

The rise of Nazism threw the witching world in a deep turmoil, which culminated with the incident of "Walpurgisnacht '39", in which infamous German coven leader and Nazi symphatizer Gretchen Faust overthrew all the councils of the nation with the aid of several loyal conspirators, and enacted a purge of dissidents and foreign envoys sent there to monitor the status of German Witchdom.

Her magical powers mysteriously strengthened by the ensuing slaughter, Faust crowned herself the new Walpurgis, or Witch Queen, of Germania...

MINUTEMEN: Guardians of Freedom

The Minutemen were the curious but almost flawless result of extensive research on hormonal therapy and combat drugs performed by the United States during the 1930s. Even under isolationism, the higher ups of the US military staff pushed for covert research on new and innovative methods to wage warfare and strengthen the US's defensive capabilities in case of future clashes with the Axis.

One of said research programs was the Minuteman Project which, in light of recent developings in drug chemistry and in the understanding of human genetics and hormonal systems, was aimed at creating an highly performant brand of biologically augmented soldiers. The project faced a lot of difficulties: funding risked to run out quickly, the rising isolationist climate in the country made a good part of the DoD hostile to such a kind of blue sky research, and several dead ends and development issues troubled the scientists behind the project.

Even then, against all odds, a working "super serum" was eventually developed, giving satisfactory results when tested on animal subjects. Some even say that the whole project, which initially appeared to be scientifically unsound, was completed through the sheer willpower of the research team and their want to see an end to the tyrannical forces of fascism.

Eventually, the government gave its a-ok to a lenghty process aimed at selecting Minuteman candidates from the armed forces, putting emphasis on good psycho-physical conditions, average or above average IQ, particular combat aptitude and steadfast loyalty to the country. After pressure from the research teams, the DoD removed any racial barriers from the selection process. Due to the nature of the project, volunteers were preferred.

The selection process was harsh and, after months of training, the candidates had to undergo the greatest test: the augmentation process. A sizeable number of candidates was either wounded or even crippled by the procedure, with some dying after months spent in hospitalization, but a restricted quantity of them managed to survive through the process and succesfully receive augmentation. The first Minutemen were born.

A Minuteman is a biologically augmented supersoldier with peak/superhuman strength, dexterity and combat awareness. In addition to that, some sort of slow but handy healing factor has been observed in subjects who were succesfully exposed to the serum. When succesful, the augmentation process leads to sweeping changes in the physiology of the Minuteman: muscle mass is greatly raised, the bone structure is lenghtened and strenghtened, the production of adrenaline, testosterone and other performance hormones is also raised. The average Minuteman can lift up to 1,000 lbs, is 6 feet tall or more and gifted with a particular combat acumen and almost unbreakable willpower.

Unfortunately, the rising anti-interventionist climate in the US, coupled with the ethical and economical questions of the project led to its foreclosure in the late 1930s, with only about 60 Minutemen having been succesfully produced during its lifetime. Fears of the project's scientifical details being leaked to foreign powers eventually led to the government's confiscation of a sizeable part of the documents relative to the augmentation process and even the partial destruction of some of them. The Minutemen were moved to safe locations, secluded and hidden.

After the Pearl Harbour attacks of 1941, the American government frantically started re-activating all of its military assets in preparation for the coming conflict. The surviving Minutemen were among them: even in their scarcity of numbers, these superhuman soldiers remain an important asset for the Allied war machine, providing crucial aid to several covert and special operations.

Due to their strength, Minutemen can carry significantly heavier equipment than the average infantryman. The US Armed Forces specifically equipped them with heavier versions of standard issue ordnance, such as the .45 ACP Thompson M1A1 "Plus" or the Heavy BAR autorifle, and developed wearable flak jackets and other types of plated wear for them to use.

ESPERS: Psychic Champions of The People

Espers are the peculiar result of the USSR's policy of extreme materialism and negation of anything supernatural, and its dire need to find an efficient alternative to occult weaponry. This alternative came in the form of the discovery of the Kirlian Aura, an electro-magnetic field emitted by all living beings through psychic activity, which manifested in photo negatives under the form of swirly electrical discharges. Kirlian, the eponymous Soviet researcher who first discovered such a bizzare energy in the 30s, noticed that a select few individuals emitted a significantly bigger and shinier aura. Later on, he discovered that these people were unknowingly capable of paranormally interfering with objects and other living beings through their abnormally large, invisible aura. Later on, other Soviet researchers would dub these individuals "Espers".

Initially, the Politburo (and most importantly, Joseph Stalin) eyed such a phenomenon with great distrust. The USSR had just finished ultimating one of their many purges against the supernatural folk of Russia and other socialist republics, deeming it dangerous, only to discover that other strange beings apparently had slipped under their radar. The Espers only survived being purged when the party higher ups were soundly convinced that their powers were just inherent in human nature, and not borne out of occult workings, and Stalin himself realized the potential inherent in Esper-kind.

Through a covert selection process, the NKVD and other Soviet authorities began screening members of the Young Pioneers, the national youth movement of the Union, for Psionic potentials. Particularly gifted espers were eventually removed from the Pioneers and their families, and put under stade custody, to further attune and refine their powers and ensure that they pledged their service to the Union. Such abductions were covered up as scolarships grants, disappearances, adoptions and many other things.

The young Espers were trained in secluded academies, were they underwent several therapies, often psychological and drug-based in nature, to completely awaken their dormant psychic potential. Occasionally, shock terapy was administered to particularly resilient candidates, in an effort to lift any blocks to the unlocking of their powers. Espers were also expected to excel in gymnastics, combat skills and in at least one or two scientific fields, owing to the belief that higher psychic potential was directly proportional to an higher intelligence. Attempts to further indoctrinate Espers in Marxist ideals were also made, with mixed results: it turned out that an higher psionic potential did in fact correlate with good mental resilience and higher than average willpower. Esper abilities run a wide gamut, but they usually consists in telepathy, telekinesis, pyro or cryokinesis, medianic abilities, electrokynesis, levitation and dowsing. Usually, an Esper possesses one or two of these pschic skills

After being discreetly deployed in Poland as a part of the secret Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, the Espers had their first collective baptism of fire during Operation Barbarossa, the Nazi German invasion of the USSR. While suffering from high casualty rates, these psionic warriors made a lasting mark even against the most prominent of the occult forces employed by the Reich, and are regularly featured amongst the members of Allied Shadow Ops teams.

MUNDANES: The Dominant Species?

Call them mundanes, bumpkins, bloodsacks, warm meals or every other name, nothing changes the fact that the human race is the prominent species on this planet. However, its potential is divided by several ethnical, racial, cultural, national, political and religious divisions. Mundane Humans in the Shadow Ops squads come from different extractions: some can be simple but valiant soldiers, other can be hunters aware of the supernatural and out to fight its most evil aberrations, some can be cunning geniuses.

I guess there isn't much I can tell you about them that you don't already know, is it?

AXIS POWERS

NAZI GERMANY: The Deutsches Reich

Image

The central European country of Germany is the main catalyst behind the conflict which is now tearing the world in half. Battered and broken by an unexpected defeat in the Great War, the country went through one of its darkest political and economical periods, as the fledgling Weimar Republic struggled to keep stability in the country and making ends meet. The harsh social and political climate in the country fostered the rise of extremist ideologies, one of which ended up ultimately ruling the country: National Socialism.

A conservative-revolutionary movement with a strong emphasis on racial nationalism, extreme militarism and all-around chauvinism, Nazism and its supreme leader Adolf Hitler managed to slowly but surely rise to the Chancellorship of the nation, wisely manipulating the greater public's fear of encroaching Bolshevism, and fueling the so-called Backstab Myth and many other anti-Semitic canards, polarizing the views of the nation against a perceived Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy aimed at subverting the racial and moral integrity of the white Aryan, as the Nazis defined it, race.

Hitler's political and ideological potential didn't go unobserved in the German occult underworld: the magi of the Thule Germania Grand Lodge mostly applauded his revanchist and Germanically exceptionalist ideas, the vampire Counts of the Alps were greatly interested by the romantically conservative ideals of Nazi revolution and its implications on social hierarchy, the werewolf clans of the Black Forest found common ground in the Nazi ideas about the ideal, warlike Aryan and its objective superiority on the other races of the world, and the witch covens which congregated on Mount Brocken mostly found solace in Nazism's peculiar re-evaluation of the antique pagan creeds of Germany. Even then, many other supernatural beings openly dissented against the rising regime, either out of ideological or moral reasons, or simply out of a sincere want to keep the Masquerade unbroken. Many of these dissenters and rebel either found themselves exiled and banished from their kind, or even put to death and other terrible fates.

Eventually, most of the Arch Mages of Thule co-opted Hitler's rise to power, going as far as opening diplomatical channels with the newborn Third Reich, and gradually introducing it to the unseen wonders and horrors of the Masquerade, slowly but surely undoing it. Soon, other pro-Nazi supernatural groups pledged an open allegiance to the Regime. A few months after Hitler's election to Chancellor of Germany, the powers of the occult had already managed to completely enlighten the Reich about their existance.

By 1939, the Nazi Germany's military-industrial complex had succesfully managed to implement the occult and almost pseudo-scientific technology in its workings, with the discovery of the amazing power source known as Vril being one of its greatest developments. Vril, and other bizzarre types of weaponry, magical and not, permitted Germany to quickly onslaught over Poland, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands and France, while dealing harsh blows to the Soviet Unions as a part of Operation Barbarossa.

Germany's military, the Wehrmacht, is the product of a state's entire economy being focused on waging war against its arch-enemies. The Heer, its land-branch, is the main tool of destruction at the hands of the Regime: a solid backbone of well-trained infantry divisions armed with cutting edge semi-automatic rifles forms the infrastructure of an army focused on the use of efficient tank divisions, fearsome walking war machine and gargantuan armored platforms known as Landkreuzers and armed with deadly ordinary weaponry and more exotical ordnances, such as the Rheotron beam weapons or the aforementioned Vril ammunition and power sources. Last but not least, the Heer possesses a wealth of special units, ranging from the heavily armored Panzersoldaten, to the high flying Raketensoldaten and even occasional supernatural units like werewolf packs and small but deadly vampire commandos. While it is not unusual to see a supernatural being or practitioner of the occult arts assigned to Heer platoons and squads, it bears to note that the German Army remains a mostly conventional force, albeit one armed with cutting edge tech.

The Luftwaffe, created under Hitler himself, is the infamous air branch of the Reich's armed forces. Equipped with highly performing fighters and sturdy, terrifying bomber squadrons, the Luftwaffe dominates the skies of Europe, bringing terror in the minds of civilians and soldiers alike. Even more infamous are the Witch Squadrons, or Hexensgeschwaderen, serving under it: flying atop of their incredibly fast brooms, these sorceresses of the sky have earned grudging respect or everlasting hatred from their Allied rivals. Recently, the Luftwaffe has been researching new methods to harness recent technological advances in the knowledge of so-called "Duct Engines"

While not as prominent as the other two services, the Kriegsmarine is well known for its shifty, paranoically efficient submarine units known as the Wolfpacks, the bane of Allied resource routes in the Atlantic. The good combat record of the relatively small navy branch, which has begun to adopt water mages in its ranks, is probably one of the main reasons why the German miliary higher ups tend to overlook the not particularly Nazi-ish nature of the navy.

Last but definitely not least is the Waffen-SS. While the Heer could be called the iron hand of the Nazi State, the Waffen-SS units are the spiked steel gauntlet of the Nazi Party, a part-elite, part-fanatic cadre of combatants who hold steadfast loyalty to Hitler and the ideals of racism, especially racial theory. Their likeliness to commit war crimes against those deemed inferior by the Party is so heinous that even the not quite clean Heer is sometimes shocked by their actions. If the Wehrmacht is a tool of conquest, the SS are a tool of extermination, humiliation and destruction.

At the deep, dark heart of the SS lies Ahnenerbe, a covert cadre where the Reich pooled some of its most skilled and ruthless individuals, occult and not. Armed with the best equipment, weaponry and manpower pools the Reich has to offer, Ahnenerbe is Nazi Germany's premier tool of supernatural warfare. SS Divisions with ties to such a shadowy group are usually seen fielding a wealth of inhuman troops in battles, ranging from surgically augmented monstrosities known as Ubersoldaten, to battalions of ghoulified soldiers and elite human troops clad in Vril-powered armor.

Ahnenerbe also conducts research on occult artifacts and fringe science, staging several expeditions to remote parts of the world to search for ancient magical relics or more Vril sources, and conducting unethical experiments to further their aims. Most importantly, they also serve as the Nazi Regime's greatest line of defense and offence against Allied Shadow Ops commandos and other enemy supernatural threats.

Currently, Nazi German troops are heavily deployed in Northern Africa, aiding Fascist Italian troops in their attempt to destroy any British presence in the area, and in the Eastern Front against the USSR, as a part of ongoing Operation Barbarossa. The rest of Europe is occupied by Heer troops, who harshly exert their dominion with the help of puppet governments and military governors.

According to the Polish Resistance, the SS has been systematically removing European Jews from the ghettos of occupied territories, transferring them to unknown locales which, according to rumours, function as "harsh work camps and factories" for their prisoners. Allied Command has frequently overlooked these reports, even judging part of them as simply an attempt of the Polish Underground to elicit more help and aid for their nation. Some British mages have advanced the hypotesis that it may be the part of a heinous pagan sacrificial ritual against those perceived as impure by the occult members of the Regime...but the truth is likely much more mundane and horrific.

Imperial Japan: The Land of the Rising Sun

Image

While the Meiji era showed that Japan was capable of adopting new cultural and technological influences from the west, and the Taisho era provided further proof of the fledgling empire's desire to join the great powers of the world, it was the Showa era which finally cemented the island nation's status as a force to be reckoned with.

With its weak parliamentary system being virtually in the hands of the Imperial Army and Navy, and bolstered by the Emperor's tacit approval of its expansionistic plans, Japan tried making its prophesized destiny of rulership of all of Asia become true by establishing several footholds in continental and oceanic East Asia. The first to fall was Manchuria in 1931, during one of the many confrontations between the Empire and the growingly unorganized forces of KMT-ruled China.

Even before Hitler's first contact with the occult underground of Germany, Japan could count on the help on an assorted entourage of mythical beings known as Youkai, which pledged allegiance to the God Emperor Hiroito, and on its rich background in the magical practices of onmyodo, and the kami-related magic of the miko priestesses. Empowered by such an occult arsenal, Japan cut further into China after the dubious Marco Polo incident in 1937, which prompted the empire to launch itself in another campaign of conquest. Shanghai fell in three weeks, while the Chinese capital of Nanjing was swiftly razed to the ground, its population victim of untold atrocities at the hands of Japanese troops. Even after the capital of second capital Wuhan, however, the Chinese government continued a desperate resistance from the third capital of Chongqing, which is still ongoing in 1942.

1938 saw multiple border clashes between Japan and the Soviet Union, which eventually ended with a stalemate and a neutrality pact signed in 1941 between the two countries. Unbeknowst to Japan, the USSR would later collaborate with Western Allied intelligence agencies in several operations against the empire, including Shadow Ops.

Japan's ruthless aggression against China would not go unpunished: after heavy condemnations by Britain and France, the US took direct initiative, levying a set of hard sanctions and putting an oil and steel embargo on the Empire. This, in conjunction with precedent ideological leanings and a shared hostility towards the Soviet Union, convinced Japan to further its imperialist agenda by allying with Germany and Italy in what came to be called the Pact of Steel. The Axis Powers had been born.

The next years would see the Japanese invasion of French Indochina, the subjugation of the Dutch East Indies and the occupation of British Malay and Singapore. However, the Japanese encroachment on the Pacific would hit its climax with the sudden attack on the USN base of Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, aimed at crippling American naval combat performance in the ocean. The attack, which was also aided by mythical sea creatures on the Japanese side, would however just rouse the US from a period of isolationist slumber, and unleash another formidable enemy on the Axis powers.

The Imperial Japanese Army is disproportionately big in comparison to the other land forces of the Pacific Front. Even then, it suffers from major equipment and training setbacks, which are remedied only by the almost fanatic fervour and loyalty to the God Emperor which possesses the vast majority of its soldiers, and the high combat performance of the elite Imperia Guard divisions. Several youkai, from the boisterous Onis to the shifty Kitsune, are employed by the IJA, which is mostly deployed in Japanese-occupied parts of China, Burma, Indonesia and an innumerable quantity of small islands and atolls in the Pacific.

The Imperial Navy remains Japan's military powerhouse. Capable of competing even against the prestigious Royal Navy of Britain, the IJN is the Allies' main opponent in the Pacific Theatre, embroiled in a deep rivalry with a wounded but motivated U.S. Navy. The IJN makes heavy use of occult weaponry in its battle for the control of the Pacific seas, including the help of several seaborne creatures from Japan's mythical past.

Fascist Italy: Legacy of The Caesars

Image

While predating both Germany and Japan in the development and use of fascist ideology, Italy was less sharply effective in performance. Nominally a constitutional monarchy held by the House of Savoy, Italy's true ruler is Benito Mussolini, Il Duce, a former socialist politician who codified and created the National Fascist Party in the early 1920s, quickly leading it to the total control of Italy's politics in 1922, when a column of party members marched on Rome and succesfully convinced King Victor Emmanuel III to hand over power to him and the PNF, threatening him with the possibility of a Bolshevik takeover.

The local magical community's reaction to Mussolini was mixed. The few but pampered vampiric lineages of Italy took a graceful interest in his demographic policies and openness to preserve social hierarchies, the werewolf clans of the country and especially Latium admired his mission to create a new Roman Empire in the Mediterranean informed by traditonal and masculine values, the numerous witch communities appreciated his mystical views on national identity but loathed his latter approaches with the Catholic Church and the extremely chauvinistic tone of his ideology, and the Grand Lodge of Esperia (Italy) and its mages reacted indecisively, splitting in different sides and faction over the issues of support and opposition to Fascism, and isolationism and interventionism in Italian political affairs.

Italy's first imperialistic endeavour in the fascist era culminated in the 1937 takeover of Ethiopia. The Italian military, which suffered from sub par performance during said campaign, drew international condemnation from the League of Nations due to its indiscriminate use of mustard gas against African troops.

Eventually, much like with Japan, a combination of ideological common grounds, diplomatical isolation and far fetched military goals lead Italy to openly ally itself with Hitler's Germany in 1939, forming the nucleus of what would go on to become the Axis. With the start of the war, however, the Italian military would started providing its German allies with multiple hassles, like the almost botched invasion of Greece in 1940, which required German intervention and the annexation of Jugoslavia to be completed, and the long and grinding North African campaign against Britain and Free French Forces, which hasn't yet seen a clear end. A sizeable Italian contigent was also sent to the Eastern Front to accompany the Wermacht in the fight against Soviet forces, with greatly mixed results.

The Italian Royal Army is a moderately large land service branch, blessed with several specialized infantry divisions such as the mountain Alpini, Bersaglieri motorized troops and Folgore paratroopers, but plagued by average to bad arms, lacking armor and, most importantly, a terminally incompetent command apparatus. Like the rest of the Italian armed forces, it has got a lesser percentual of magically enabled troops, due to the aforementioned internal divided in Italy's supernatural underground. It's mostly deployed in Northern Africa and occupied Greece, with a sizeable expeditionary force on the Eastern Front.

The Italian Royal Navy is a numerically formidable seaborne force, possessing generally well designed (but aging) ships and capable of competing with the British Royal Navy for the control of the Mediterranean, but riddled with glaring technological weaknesses such as the lack of adequate radar and sonar equipment, and a general lack of materials and crew training. Due to the Kriegsmarine's lack of prominence, it's the most important navy in the hands of the Western Axis.

The Italian Royal Air Force is numerically small, and afflicted by slow production queues and outdated manufacturing methods, which heavily hamper its ability to field its newly designed planes, which generally tend to be good quality. Regia Aeronautica witches, while few, are well known for their very good combat performance, which has permitted them to generate a low but respectable number of aces.

While often derisively depicted as bumbling buffoons under the command of their more wrathful and violent German allies, Italian troops have done their fair share of atrocities and assorted ethnic cleansing campaigns, especially directed against Jugoslavians and Greeks.

ALLIED POWERS

The British Empire: All The King's Men

Image

Britain, with its multiple dominions and colonies, emerged victorious from the Great War but bearing the mustard gas-poisoned scars of the horrific battles in Belgium and France and their inhuman death toll, and the lasting economical signs of such a wide and costly conflict. The rise of Nazism and its subsequent declaration of war against the democratic powers of the world is now subjecting the British Empire to yet another harsh test: will the armies of the King, bolstered by the greatest mages and witches of the world, manage to suffer the vicious onslaught of the Axis and help in claiming victory for the Allied forces? Or will the shadow of the swastika loom ever closer than before on the white cliffs of Dover?

Great Britain: Heart of the Empire

Britain's contemporary history and the Grand Mage Lodge of Albion's own one are deeply entwined. During the 19th Century, The Lodge covertly supported Britain's colonial adventures, both out of simple national jingoism, and of interests in the opening of new, exotic countries to their magical research and occult archeological expeditions. From Egypt to India, Canada to Australia, the Lodge spearheaded the creation of new, organized Colonial Lodges and began to work in stamping out indigenous magical traditions, deeming them inferior.

Eventually, the Empire started declining after the grave economic downturn caused by the aftermath of the Great War (which, according to some, had allegedly been an Albion Lodge plot to take out the German Empire from the political world map and leave free space for Britain and its magical community). For most of the 20s and the early 30s, Britain suffered from an era of unemployement, disappointing economical performancing and sociopolitical upheaval. However, unlike most of Europe, the proud monarchical tradition of the country stood the test of time, and just witnessed the rise of the peculiarly moderate labour movement. Instead, Britain's greatest test as a nation would come soon, in a different, unexpected and critical form.

Ever since their rise, Britain held an ambivalent opinion of the totalitarian regimes domineering Europe. The initial policy of appeasement towards the nazi-fascists and, in the case of Mussolini's Italy, even workable diplomatic ties would soon reveal its faults when Hitler, after annexing Austria and Czechoslovakia with the tacit inaction of the UK and France, would proceed to enter war with the two as a part of his conquest of Poland. This would eventually lead to Chamberlain's downfall and Winston Churchill's rise as the Prime Minister of Britain.

Meanwhile, the Grand Lodge of Albion gradually became more and more wary, even anxious about Germany's alleged use of bizzarre, exotic weaponry in its offensive against European democracy. Some suspected that the Grand Lodge of Germania had breached the sacred rule of the Masquerade, providing their services to Germany.

And they were right. The Invasion of France in 1940 saw Germany's occult-augmented military harshly defeat the Allied defending forces, which were saved from almost complete destruction only by the desperate intervention of France's occult underground. The British Expeditionary Force, badly battered and demoralised, unceremoniously managed to evacuate through the Channel Strait.

Even then, Britain's seemingly darkest hour would turn into its finest one. Other than the support given by its dominions, colonies and by volunteers all over the free world, Britain would also receive the peculiar, invaluable help of its greatest, hidden benefactor. With the help of Aleister Crowley, the British Grand Lodge succesfully made contact with Winston Churchill, briefing him on the world of the occult and its involvement in the war, and instructing the British goverment on how to finally harness its vast magical resources.

Germany was hit with its first failing when the gigantic Operation Seeloewe, an aerial invasion of the British Isles aided by the unwieldly Zeppellin airships of the Luftwaffe, was met by unexpected, tenacious resistance by the Royal Air Force and the British Army. Mages erected giant magical barriers and projected beams in the sky to hasten the advance of the zeppellins, Witches took the fight to the skies and aided fighters and AA turrets in taking down Luftwaffe flyers, vampires and werewolves fought along with common soldiers and hunters to repel the small pockets of Germans who had succesfully managed to land on British soil, only to find their collective doom.

The Battle of Britain was a turning point in the war. A ray of hope for the forces of European democracy, an huge blow for the totalitarian fascist regimes, and a sign of the ultimate breaking of the Masquerade, with all the consequences of the case. Later on, Britain would rush to Africa, fighting Italy and Germany in an harsh but occasionally rewarding campaign, while its forces in India would mount a counterattack against the encroaching Japanese Empire.

The British Army is a modern, growing combat force. Its lack in immediate numbers is made up by good training and equipment, and an officer cadre which is quickly growing accustomed (albeit with still some glaring problems) to the new methods of waging warfare. Morale varies on the theater of combat, but the average English Tommy is either stereotypically cool-headed and prone to sardonic quips, or cocky and full of the "East Londoner" spirit. The Army also fields Scotsmen, Welshmen and volunteer Irish soldiers from the neutral Eire. It is mostly deployed in Northern Africa, fighting the combined forces of the Italian 10th Army and the German Afrika Korps.

The Royal Navy is a strong naval combat force which was unfortunately marred by severe unpreparedness in the early stages of the war, which led to the initial Allied downturn in the Battle of the Atlantic, setbacks in the Pacific, and an heated confrontation in the Mediterranean with the naval forces of Italy. Nonetheless, the RN doesn't back off easily: it has pioneered the use of the equally innovative and deadly SONAR, and is also aided by the expertise in camouflage and navigation supplied by the great mages of Britain.

The Royal Air Force is the efficient aerial branch of the British Armed Forces. Gifted with skilled pilots, reliable and performing airplanes and the aid of newly developed RADAR technology, the RAF is the greatest enemy of the German Luftwaffe. A rivalry which is strenghtened by the already existing one between the witches of both countries, which now regularly duel each other over the skies of contested Europe. Many pilots hail from occupied countries, or are even volunteers from neutral nations.

Britain was the main backer and founder of the Shadw Ops program, and still remains its host, with the SOE/OSS/NKVD joint Shadow Command being located in Baker Street, London, next to the historical home of famed 19th Century detective Sherlock Holmes.

However, Britain is not alone in this fight.

Canada: The Mighty North, Strong and Free

In a great display of both autonomy and loyalty, Canada's parliament indipendently voted on the question of hailingor not Britain's call for help. It did. While it may not seem like it, the Dominion possesses a rich military history of triumphs, harking back to the 18th Century. The infamous Canadian sturmtruppen still haunt the memories of German veterans of the Great War, while the grim tales of ancient native shamanism and of fearlessly vicious werewolf clans are being proven true by the entrance of the Northern Dominion at war. If something can punch a lot above its weight, then that something is Canada.

ANZAC: Death and Deserts Down Under

Australia and New Zealand share a common heritage of being the ancestral lands of warrior people, colonized by the convicts, military men and tough pioneers of other warrior people, all of which were thoughened up by unforgiving weather, dangerous fauna and ruthless colonial fights and squabbles.

After heeding Mother Britain's call, the "ANZAC" countries promptly decided to go all in in the fight against Japan's imperialist aims and Germany's totalitarian agenda, supplying their considerable resources and manpower to the Allied cause. Australia's werewolves, native mages and bizzarre domesticated monsters are a walking nightmare for Axis forces in the Pacific.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics: Hammer of the People

Image

The USSR is an highly peculiar nation, whose membership in the Allies is highly controversial. Borne out of the great social upheavals that followed the fall of the Russian Empire in the late parts of the Great War, the fledgling Union was the product of years of Marxist struggle against the perceived imperialistic powers of the world which kept the common worker down to benefit their greed and want of power. After the war, the death of the Bolshevik political mastermind Vladimir Lenin led to a power struggle in the country's directing Troika, which culminated with the rise of the equally ambitious and paranoid Iosif Stalin, one of Lenin's own disciples.

Under Stalin, the Soviet Union enacted a series of sweeping economic reforms aimed at creating a command economy, subsided major heavy industry plans, enforced the sometimes violent and ill-advised collectivization of the agricultural industries of the country, and performed a series of purges against individuals considered to be plotting against the establishment, the ideals of Marxist-Leninism and, most importantly, Stalin itself. The Great Purges not only led to the imprisonment or death of many valuable party members, civil functionaries, intellectuals and military staff members, but also spelt doom for many on the other side of the Masquerade.

Ever since ancestral times Russia, Ukraine and the other constituent republics of the Union had possessed a rich and varied occult underground, spearheaded by the prestigious Lodge of The Rus', the unique witch covens of the Steppes, important vampire counts and the famous werewolf and werebear clans of the country. The revolution and its following years put all of these beings in dire straits after the government acknowledged their existence and started a massive purge and exile of any occult being suspected to be a threat to the new state. This greatly diminished the strenght of the USSR's occult underground, and would come to bite it back later.

While technically on the other side of the ideological fence from Nazi Germany, in the late 30s Stalin sought to keep his far right neighbours at bay through diplomatical action, eventually going as far as signing a secret non-aggression pact with Hitler, which would come to be known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Said agreement secretly divided Europe in two soon-to be political spheres, a Soviet and a German one. Germany respected this plan when it invaded Poland in 1939, letting the USSR take over the eastern side of the country and giving them carte blanche when Soviet troops annexed the Baltic States. While Germany was embroided in the war, the USSR also fought against Finland for the control of the Karelia region in the so called Winter War, a six months long conflict which ended with an harsh, almost Pyhrric Victory of the Soviet side.

However, the apparent peace between the USSR and Nazi Germany wouldn't have lasted long: months after the invasion of France, Germany started Operaton Barbarossa, the titanic offensive and invasion of Soviet territory in Eastern Europe. Stalin himself was shocked by such a treasonous act, and spent almost a week in a state of pure shock.

The Soviet military, not fully prepared to face the German assault and suffering from lacking leadership, suffered critical defeats in the first weeks of conflict, and severe blowbacks for most of the year before the contribute of Espers, the increasing experience of ground troops, increased organization and just simple heroism from Soviet servicemen permitted the Union to win the crucial defense of ist capital city, Moscow. Hitler, enraged by such a defeat, would growingly micromanage the efforts of Eastern Wehrmacht forces. This happening would end up giving the Soviet Union a clear chance in the attempt to take back its soil from invaders.

The circumstances of war would eventually lead the Union to (controversially) side itself with the Allies, which provided to refurnish it with supplies and lend-lease equipment. Opinions on Stalin are ambivalent: some see him as a manipulating, potentially backstabbing Bolshevik bent on authoritarianism, while others are open to looking over Uncle Joe's disturbing dark side in exchange for his important contribution to the Allied cause.

The Red Army is a massive and growingly hardened land combat force, with even highly reliant and innovative small arms and armored, but suffering from high attrition rates, generally poor training, and a war industry which had just started roaring again after months of relocation to the safe Siberian steppes. Even then, the Red Army and its implacable commissars remain a crucial Allied bulwark in the fight against the Axis. Espers are heavily used by the army as a part of the war effort, along with several exotical technologies such as the psychotronic tank or tesla coil weapons. Occasionally, some of the few Soviet-aligned supernatural beings can be seen serving in Red Army ranks. In accordance with the tenets of gender equality in Marxism, many women serve in frontline positions in the Red Army.

The Soviet Air Forces, once the biggest in the world, suffered heavy setbacks during the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa, with the destruction of whole airfields and squadrons before they could even depart. Even then, they regularly engage into heated aerial battles with the German Luftwaffe, with the aid of the fearsomely performing Esper pilots and the few witches loyal to the party.

The Red Fleet, the USSR's Navy, has got a peculiar fame: with most of its ships blocked in the almost locked black sea, or occupied in breaking blockades in the Baltic and committing sub warfare, a sizeable part of its sailors and marine troops has got reassigned to land combat roles, even gaining fame for their above average combat performance.

The United States of America:Arsenal of Democracy

Image

America, at the end of World War One, was a tired nation. It was not tired due to the war itself - it had lost the fewest soldiers of any major power involved in the war. It was tired of the international diplomacy surrounding the war, the social upheavals of the Progressive era, and especially of Europe. Though America and her allies had emerged victorious, the petty squabbling of the Versailles Treaty and the failure of Congress to join the League of Nations left a bad taste in President Wilson's mouth. The citizens, too, were unhappy. 1919 was marked by strikes in major industry, race riots in major cities, and anarchist attacks in Wall Street. To make things worse for Wilson and the Democrats, that year Wilson suffered a stroke.

The America on the other side of the Masquerade's curtain was not much better. It had been divided on whether or not to join World War One up until the Zimmermann Telegram, and even then there was some disagreement, as the largest lodges and covens of the Americas suspected it to be a ploy of the Albion Lodge to eliminate Germany as a power. The great covens under the Salem Charter were the most vocal about this. However, even they turned to supporting (begrudgingly) the war when it finally came. But that didn't stop them from immediately cutting off the last remaining attachments to their associates in Europe at war's end, announcing this at 1919's Salem Festival. The Grand Lodge of Columbia followed suit a few weeks later.

Harding's 'return to normalcy' was met with open arms by the American public. The 1920's were a time of great prosperity for the United States, and her presidents openly touted its laissez-faireness. Booze, while illegal, was readily available to those who knew where to find it - usually being distributed by organized crime or those on the other side of the Masquerade, who had a much easier time of hiding their stashes. Cities grew, as rural Americans and European immigrants flocked to them in hope of a better life and a slice of the ever-growing American pie. The school of jazz was in session.

But, like all good times came to an end. The stock market began to decline slowly in July of 1929, and finally collapsed on the 29th of October that year. The effects were immediate and long-lasting. President Hoover, contrary to opinion, did indeed try to save the economy. Unfortunately his methods were the old ones that had worked with old economies and much smaller crashes; with 1929's crash, things only got worse. By 1930 America had had enough of both Hoover and the Republicans, and elected a crippled New York governor who promised a 'New Deal' for Americans. Slowly but surely, and despite the enormous setback that was the Dust Bowl, America began to pull out of the Great Depression. By 1937, America was back to where it started judging solely by GDP, though unemployment was still high. But a greater threat was looming in Europe.

American reaction to the rise of fascism was mixed. Some were for it, even leading to the formation of the German American Bund. However, America's opinion of fascism deteriorated as conditions for those considered 'subhuman' in Germany deteriorated. Likewise, to the east, Japan's rapid expansion of its empire - and the brutality thereof - was concerning to say the least. But when war did break out in Europe, America decided not to get directly involved. Sure, America provided weapons to the allies, and some soldiers did cross into Canada to join the British Armed Forces - soldiers of both paranormal and non ilk - but FDR still stated that America would be neutral. He even put an embargo on oil for the Japanese in 1940, but otherwise made no moves to get involved.

Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor forced his hand. The very next day, America declared war on Japan, turning its enormous manufacturing base into a proper war machine. Factories on the West Coast began to churn out warships as fast as the IJN and their sea monsters could destroy them on a good day. In the east, American transport ships brought ever more troops, tanks and planes to Northern Africa to help wrestle it from Italian and German control. What it lacked in variety of seamonsters under its navy's control, it made up for in technological and numerical superiority to its Japanese adversaries. And what it lacked in technological superiority compared to Germany's occult and mechanical forces, it made up for in the durability and reliability of its tanks, and the skill of its witches - matched in flying skill only by the Germans, in stealth by the British, and in the accuracy of their spells and rifles by none. And perhaps America's greatest asset was the OSS, whose espionage and other covert ops actions were exceeded only by the SoE itself, and even exceeded them at times in East Asia.

In the oft-attributed but never-proven words of Isoroku Yamamoto, the sleeping giant has been awakened, and filled with a terrible resolve.

Republic of China: Three Principles of the People

China, heart of the Orient...

For millenia, it had been the center of the universe, whose culture, riches and grandeur made it the envy of its neighbours, enlightening and tempting the barbarian hordes beyond its borders. But the twilight of its last dynasty, the Qing, had cast a dark shadow on its once proud history, as Western barbarians continually harassed its people with profiteering and war. It was this catalyst that finally brought revolution to China, in the form of the Xinhai Revolution in 1911. It was hoped by its progenitor and first president, Sun Yat-sen, that this would propel the country on the road to prosperity and modernization, one to emulate the Japanese he and other like-minded Asians had so admired. That dream was to remain a failed hope.

Thirty years since its revolution, China had been fighting an eternal battle with enemies both within and beyond. From its establishment, it had struggled to pin down errant warlords throughout the land, as well as Mao Zedong's rampantly popular People's Liberation Army. Corruption rooted into its bureaucracy by warlords, officials and triads alike, and the country continued to ail just as the Qing before had. But the most dire threat came across the seas, as Japan transformed from its greatest idol to its worst foe. As militarist puritans seek to carve their own colonial domain at the Chinese' expense, Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang government was forced to fight a losing battle of attrition. Entrenched in Chongqing following its rout from Nanjing and Wuhan and with Hitler's change of support for its nemesis, the Central Government now had to turn to the very colonial powers it hated. But with even them on the ropes, can the nation hope to survive? Surrender, of course, is not an option, as Japan's long list of atrocities continued to grow on the occupied mainland...

Owing to its long traditions, China has no shortage of Qi-based martial artists to join its ranks in the war. From Shaolin monks to the myriad masters escaping from occupied Foshan, many flocked under the banner of the homeland to drive out the invaders. The communists' hostility towards such 'outdated traditions' only funneled recruitment towards the National Revolutionary Army, a scene the Generalissimo was glad to see for once. As a result, Japan's own occult forces was left to suffer increasingly brutal attrition against its fighters, one it was far less able to afford compared to the Chinese. And with a discipline and local training rivaling the equally fearsome Muslim Divisions under the Ma loyalists, it was little wonder the Qi Corps was greatly admired by European observers, in contrast to its European-armed divisions.

People's Liberation Army: The People's War

Image

The Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, otherwise known as the People's Liberation Army, was born from the flames of that May Fourth Movement, as intellectuals grew disenfranchised by the continued corruption and decadence of the ruling Kuomintang. As triads, corrupt officials and warlords dominated the parliament, those inspired by the examples of Marx and Lenin took to armed conflict to free China from capitalist and imperialist control. The struggles with the Nationalists had been gruelling, and the Long March had nearly driven the Communists to total destruction. But safe within the secluded stronghold of Yan'an, the PLA regrouped, establishing a foothold amidst the looming Japanese threat. It was then they formed a second United Front with the Kuomintang to expel the invaders, a shaky, if necessary truce at best. There, Mao Zedong would wage his guerrilla war against the Japanese and join ranks with Chiang's National Revolutionary Army. However, few on both sides doubted for a moment that war would continue long after Japan is driven out, and the Communists had no intention to bleed for the benefit of the Nationalists.

Despite its popularity with the peasant masses, the PLA won little, if any favour, from its age-old martial arts community. With an ideology that called for the destruction of everything traditional, it was little wonder the NRA's Qi Corps enjoyed the influx of martial artists far more than the PLA hoped. Instead, the Communists turned their attention to the Soviet Union, requesting aid in the form of esper creation and training. However, with the USSR in desperate need for espers to hold back the Nazi occultists in the west, few could be spared for the PLA in their own war in the Far East. Starved of options, the few innovative martial artists that joined the communist ranks took to creating a new, 'revolutionary' form of martial arts, one intended to be compatible to Marxist ideology. As such, the portmanteau of Gun Fu, coined by foreign journalists visiting Mao in Yan'an, was created, combining ancient martial arts with modern firearms training. The effects, as the Japanese would learn the hard way, was devastating, as sabotage and assassinations spiked on an unprecedented scale. Forced to contend with the new threat, many Onmyodo and Ki experts were pulled from the front lines for anti-partisan duty. Such results impressed the party cadres enough to give it an official corps. Now fighting alongside the NRA's Qi Corps, the Red Fighters proved an equal to their Nationalist counterparts, to the point of mutual enmity and grudging respect. It remains to be said how the final showdown for the heart of China would end. But for now, they will free China from Japanese brutality, with or without the Nationalists' help.[/quote]

Free France: Liberty, Equality Brotherhood

Image

Set up in London in 1940, De Gaulle's Free France represents the goverment in exile of France and of its colonies, in open antagonism with the German-backed Vichy Republic. Its symbiotic relationship with the highly important French Resistance and the manpower, skills and even occult resources offered by Free Frenchmen are highly valuable to the allied effort, be it on land, sea or air. French vampires and werewolves, also known as Garou, are well known for their combat prowess.

The Shadow Operations

While Nazi Germany pioneered the mass use of occult beings in warfare, the first nations to create occult special forces teams meant to be deployed to neutralize enemy supernatural threats were the Allied Powers of Britain and France, soon to be joined by the USSR, America and China. The first Shadow Ops teams were first formed in 1940, only admitting mages and witches along mundane military personnel, but later on access was also permitted to vampires, werewolves and other beings which were once considered a "liability" for the safety of operations.

The field of operations of the Shadow teams is virtually extended to the entire world, thanks to an intricate net of magical portals mantained by Allied-aligned and resistance mages, but its main HQ remains in Baker Street, London, sharing an home with the British Special Operations Executive. Due to the organization's international character, several attache offices, aides and observers from the American OSS, Soviet NKVD and French BCRA. The building itself hosts dormitories, common rooms, well-furnished armories, briefing and monitoring rooms, a training facility, administratory offices and mystic portal mantained by the Albion Lodge in its inner levels.

The Shadow Ops teams are numbered and listed using the RAF Phonetic Alphabet. Their make-up, species and nationality-wise, tends to be pretty varied: to build an all-round good, perfectly functioning Shadow Ops team, an highly varied range of skills, powers and supernatural abilities are needed. While most Shadow Operatives are volunteers, but the SOE-led Shadow Command is known to sometimes "convince" unwitting potential operatives into joining one of the squads. It's also not uncommon to find Axis defectors in the ranks of the Shadow teams. It bears to note that the Shadow Operatives are just a small part of the massive number of occult individuals employed through the course of the war.

I like this, but there's a lot to read.

Nevertheless, I'll probably join in once I've read.

This is what happens when Agri takes seven months to make an RP instead of the usual one.

Also Agri I'm pretty sure you're allowed to post the actual Nazi Flag in content. It's just as your nation's flag that the swastika isn't allowed. Also also the proportions of that US flag is wrong.

I foresee Danger 5 being created.

I'll probably make an ex-bootlegger who joins the Army to escape the people that are pissed off at him, though I'm torn between making him a Werewolf, Mundane, or a Minuteman.

Agri has told me that he's going to be rather strict on who he allows to be a Minuteman. But you'll probably be fine.

You can be a Mundane, since the average Mundie in the Shadow teams is Audie Murphy material.

Bio:
Transcript, C. Harris 12/29/41 wrote:"My life story. That's all you guys want, right? For me to talk about myself, and then you're whisking me away to...Virginia, is that right?"

"Well, enough pussy-footing around. I was born back in '07, up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. I wasn't rightly born in a town, you see; most mountain folk prefer to have their kids at home, in the old way of things. I was born in the same house as my father, and his father, and his father before him. We lived near Morganton, out away from the paved roads, in and among the holler. Pa ran a sawmill and made his own hooch, while Ma kept the house and the children in order. It wasn't very eventful, even with Pa selling hooch to everyone. I often had time, in between school and chores, to go out hunting and fishing with friends, and explore those ancient hills we called home."

"I lived a normal childhood, you see, normal as it could get. At seventeen, I was bored to death of the Appalachians. I had my fancy diploma from school, and a bit of knowledge about a wide world outside of North Carolina. Something was telling me to go, you know? A voice in my head kept shouting at me to look at the big abyss we call the 'world,' and jump in head-first. That's what I did, by marching my tail into a recruiting office and signing my soul to Uncle Sam. A few weeks later, and I was shipped off to the training depot at Parris Island, to become a Marine."

"I got yelled at a bunch as I was thrust from easy living into the rigors of military life. They made me live according to a clock, doing a specific task at all hours of the day. I knew how to shoot already, but the Marines honed my skill with a rifle. Rough time, learning how to fight, how to walk, how to eat, and many other wonderful, almost mundane things that were structured in a very weird fashion. Eighty or so days passed before they threw us a big ceremony; by that point, I had mostly fallen into my routine, and thus I waded into my additional infantry training with a desire to get through. Got through it, I did."

"'27 rolled around, and I was shipped off to Nicaragua in order to fight local rebels. Say what you will about what we were doing there; I was just there because Uncle Sam put me on a boat there. There was a lot of patrolling to be done, rounding up rebel sympathizers from the local village. A lot of abuse happened back then, with the Nicaraguan National Guardsmen being particularly cruel to the civilians. It took me a while to learn Spanish, but I caught onto it quick. I'd consider Ocotal to be my first taste of combat. It started with sightings of small groups of rebels, followed by full-on charges at the City Hall and other buildings."

"Those charges went on for a long time. I was up on the roof of City Hall, Springfield in hand, taking shots at the dimly-lit figures and shadows that were running around and shooting back at me. That fighting carried on until the morning, when the Navy came down with their bombers. Now, that was something. The first dive-bombing that I ever saw; planes swooping down and dropping bombs on the rebels. The ground shook mightily every time that a bomb fell, and the booms drowned out the frightened screaming of the enemy. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy it somewhat. After that, I took a promotion and some lessons on horseback riding through the wild terrain of Nicaragua, the purpose of which was in preparation for partaking in mounted patrols with the Guardia."

"I stayed in until about '29, spending the final two years on my enlistment solely in Nicaragua. My work with the Corps and the Guardia had...changed. I was given command of a Guardia unit - a platoon of forty men. I was a Sergeant with chevrons and all, though the reality was that my responsibilities transcended my rank. We stopped running patrols on the roads, instead opting to seek out high-value rebels and either capture or kill them. We only rode at night and regularly bribed whores, inkeepers, and other folks that we knew might have at least a modicum of contact with suspected rebels on a daily basis. I tell you, if you pay a whore's family fifty bucks a month in exchange for spreading herself for some rebel captain, then expect 'a return on your investment.' We literally worked as both pimps and bounty-hunters; some guys started scraping off some cash from the whores, and 'protecting' them. As for me...I prefer not to self-incriminate myself anymore than I've already been incriminated legally. All I'll say is that you can get away with a lot of victimless crime during wartime."

"The Corps mustered me out with an honorable discharge, plus the rank of Sergeant and a couple of medals for distinguishing myself over there.. Goddamnit, I didn't want any of that. I wanted to stay in; make a career as a non-commissioned officer, or maybe even seek my commission. Either way, I wanted to stay a Marine for years to come. The Corps gave me purpose, a sense of duty, and without that, I began falling into bad crowds. I ran around South Florida for a while, flunking out of colleges and picking drunk fights with equally-drunk Crackers. Between '30 and '31, I joined a schooner crew, moving 'supplies' from various ports-of-call in the Caribbean, up to the States. It was Prohibition, so we all knew what we were moving. No questions asked, as I tied knots and manipulated the sails and other pieces of equipment aboard the SS Implication. The job wasn't totally dangerous; sometimes we'd have to dodge the Coast Guard or the Navy, or shove off with a skeleton crew because you G-Men got word that we were in town. Fun work."

"Then, Prohibition just...kinda...ended. Soon, alcohol was allowed in the US once more, and we survived for a few months bringing in bay rum and other spirits. Then, distilleries started opening back up stateside, nullifying our once-vital service. Six months in, rum-running wasn't cutting it for us. My Captain, a fella named Graves, was able to swing us a job moving gizmos from Key West to some no-name place in Haiti. I had nothing better to do, so I went on the job. Instead of going to Port-au-Prince like I thought we would, we sailed to this creepy island out in literally nowhere. It's like from those horror movies; dark cloud hanging overhead, creepy rich scientist living in an equally creepy villa, glowing eyes in the jungle. I was up at the bow, holding onto a rope as the Implication sailed into a wall of fog that surrounded the island. My mind was telling me to jump over the rail, swim to safety."

"You can guess that I stayed with my crew. Was I really going to jump off and swim back to Florida? Not a chance. The main resident of the island was a creepy guy named Doctor Jean-Paul Renault, who claimed to be an accomplished brain surgeon. His gaze was creepy, like he sized up the parts of every person that he looked at. He acted like an aristocrat, going on about how the Renaults were well-established in Haiti, white nobility among the locals. I cared less about that, and more about why the blacks were always standing around, seemingly motionless and dead-eyed unless Renault told them to do something. They moved all stiff-like, wouldn't listen to anyone but Renault."

"One night, while some of the guys and I were playing cards on the boat, I heard some commotion. People screaming bloody murder, like something was coming after them. I grabbed the Winchester '73, one guy grabbed a Winchester '97 scattergun, another a Model 10 revolver and lantern. The three of us disembarked and headed inland. The screaming increased as we moved closer to the small collection of bungalows surrounding the manor, and orange light shined through the trees. Everything was on fire, burning ravenously as the night winds made it dance with terrifying intensity. It was bizarre, awesome, horrifying."

"From the fire, Renault's workers came into view, though something was different. They were standing more upright, more stable than how I saw them originally. They had tools in their hands, and they were shouting. I saw other figures running from them, some of them got struck down by the workers. I could hear them shouting in French, or whatever the locals called the local French creole. I didn't know what they were saying, but with their menacing tones contrasting with the frantic pleading of more...cultured voices, I didn't really need an explanation of what was going on. I stepped forward first, shouting at them with my rifle leveled forward."

"They came forward, and of course we started shooting. It was like something out of a horror movie. What else were we going to do, let ourselves get hacked to death like the pleading whites before us? It was disorganized fire; no volleys, just us picking targets, firing, and shouting at the workers to stop and just go home. We didn't have enough ammunition to kill them all, so we had to break contact and run after a while. More and more bad guys showed up, chasing us off of the beaten path and into the jungle, into the pitch-black hellhole where I'd be running until I saw the Implication. Only one other guy had made it back, but with him were some of the house servants; normal folks, not like the ones in the town. I was suspicious, but I only cared about casting off the anchor."

"We circled around the island, witnessing the manor as it caught fire. I don't know what happened that night, what event had killed our captain and driven the workers to start killing people. I don't really want to know, but I can tell you that this world isn't always what it seems. Whatever happened; I haven't got an explanation for it."

"Now, we're moving onto my time in Spain; allegedly the reason why I'm here on the Rock is because of 'involvement with un-American armed groups in a foreign conflict in violation of an official declaration of neutrality in said conflict.' Fuck all of you, and fuck your so-called 'best interests.' You don't have to be a fucking Red to know that Franco and his Falangists and Carlists were all for driving Spain back into the cultural Dark Ages. I only got mixed up in the wild, mixed-up, confusing debacle of the Spanish Civil War when I started protecting a Spanish diplomat in Havana. It was an easy gig - until we went back to Spain."

"Do you know what a 'paseo' is? That's what the Spaniards called the killings in the opening days of the war. We were driving down the road in Madrid around the time that Franco's troops took Seville, our car adorned with government flags. We got stopped at a Guardia Civil checkpoint but we didn't know that they were with the Falangists, so we complied with what they were ordering us to do. I watched them grab my client first; I rose up and got clocked in the jaw before I even thought about reaching for my revolver. Thye started beating him; beating him into a lifeless, bloody pulp right in front of us. They didn't focus on me much, as they just kicked him and slammed down their rifle butts and truncheons on his skull and body. I was able to pull my piece; a little .38 Colt bellygun."

"Two of them fell immediately when I fired my chamber at the huddled group of Guards. As for the ensuing melee, I only remember the four or so remaining guys raising their rifles and hastily charging their bolts, before I cold-cocked one of them in the face with my revolver. The other three...I got outta there fast, so I didn't stop to appreciate what I had done to those six men. I was bleeding myself, because I took a bayonet in the right thigh, and just as many slashes that tore up my suit. I made it to the government quarter of the city and informed them of what happened. I stayed in Madrid, up until the first attack by the Falangists."

"Ten, twenty, or so days of fighting came along. I got hitched with a militia that was manning barricades along the streets of Carabanchel. The Republican force in that area consisted of foreign volunteers, militias formed from trade unionists and Communists and anarchists, and loyal members of the Guardia de Asalto. If anyone deserves credit for saving Madrid in those earliest days, it's not me; it's those damned Assault Guards. They chose their side and fought to the last man. I should know; I was there right alongside them, shooting from behind barricades and from windows high above the streets as the Nationalists attempted to push into the city."

"I got awarded for bravery after all that, and fought in the armed actions around University City and Cordoba. I helped to carry the lifeless body of John Cornford, and rode on the back of a T-26 as I waved lines and columns of soldiers and militiamen forward against the Fascists. When the Brigades further took form, I went from militia leader to Spanish Republican Captain. Instead of carrying a Mauser, I carried a German-made MP 18; good weapon with a high rate of fire, a bit unwieldy until you get the feel for it in combat. This was a lot more different from Nicaragua;
much more along the lines of what I thought a big battle might've been like in some Gary Cooper movie. Guerrilla warfare was what I had participated in before, back in Ocotal and Madrid. Jarama, Guadalajara, Catalonia; those places are just a few of the personal hells I found myself in during my time in Spain."

"My guys were all different; about all that we had in common was that we, more or less, all hailed from the same mother country. We had Communists; radicalized workers and idealistic students who all had their different views of the 'Dictatorship of the Proletariat.' Some guys wanted social justice, or no government to tell them what to do. You could say Spain was a stepping point for a lot of people with big mouths and bigger ideas, honestly. Then, there was my category: the guys who didn't all too much give a shit about causes. We weren't mercenaries, because we all swore oaths to the Spanish Republic. No, the guys like me were cast-off workers looking to make money to send back home, adventurers looking to spice up their next war novel, and - yes, even mercenaries. A motley band."

"Anyways, I spent the years between '36 and '38 bleeding all over Spain. When I wasn't scattering a field with bullets or shouting orders over the roars of tank engines, I was drinking myself almost half-blind. I didn't have to be at a bar in order to get drunk, either; I just preferred to drink with a roof over my head. In those musty rooms, swigging cheap tequila and bourbon while watching some alluring Spanish broad gyrate her hips and sing a soothing song...that was my thing."

"I met Hemingway, y'know? I forgot what we were all talking about, but if we were in the same place, we'd naturally spot each other and conversate. Talked a lot about living down in Florida; a lot of lewd things were said over many a spirit. I'm not really intending to tell you all about the guy, but I'm just saying that I met him and drank with him a lot. If I wasn't drinking or shooting the shit with Hemingway, I was bedding local women without any due regard to my personal sanitation. Say what you will about that, and I bet you will say a lot about it."

"Understand this: there were days when I wasn't sure what was around the corner, or even outside the door. I can't tell you how many times that I would be knocked out of bliss by a bomb striking the ground nearby, or when Francoists would kick down the door and catch me - literally - with my pants down. My pants didn't even need to be down, and I'm not even going to describe my life expectancy whenever I was fighting. If I didn't have ways to release, then I would've blown my brains out. The drinking, the hash, the sex - I needed it more and more as things became more dire."

"Ebro was hell; static, World War I-style fighting without as many trenches. I watched whole sections of men get torn apart by artillery, like something Remarque would write about. Night charges into the Francoist positions were terrifying - creeping through the desolate land in the dead dark, fear creeping up your spine at the first flare. I was scared more to hear them say it in German: 'Kontakt! Starte eine Fackel!'"

"It still pales me to hear those words, in German or Spanish, or Italian. That's when you knew that it was do or die. Either you ran away and got shot by either side for being an enemy or being a coward, or you swallowed your fear, held your breath, and moved forward to close in on the enemy. I never kept tallies, nor did my men. We lost as many men as we killed. More and more, I started to wonder how much longer I could stay in Spain. Was a foreign country more important than the land of my birth? It took the Communists - and Teruel - to open my eyes."

"Had I not heard about the Communist commissars and their questionable methods of 'restoring morale?' I'd seen plenty of summary executions of men who had done things to merit it; sedition, profiteering, murder, rape. Perhaps I considered that every man we put against the wall had actually done something. After we took Teruel, when the government finally sent us in after arguing about keeping the operation 'Spanish,' when the brutal winter hit us harder than Franco's guns, that's when I realized that, yes, I was not considering the gravity of the situation."

"Us foreigners were hitting our breaking point; well, at least those of us who still had home soil to return to. What were we dying for? Sure, we had sworn oaths and such, but the service commitments were obscure, and full of loops. A lot of guys didn't want to fight when Teruel got ugly,
with the bombardments and the house-to-house fights. I saw the commissars trying more people now, accusing them of betraying Spain, and more importantly, whichever Red entity they claimed to be representing. They went after me - little old apolitical me - for my hedonistic behavior. Instead of shooting me, they gave me a battalion to command. Within two days, we were at Alfambra."

"Within that first day, I was lucky enough to witness one of the last great cavalry charges as it ripped my battalion apart. My men didn't have the zeal or courage that was needed as those horses charged forward. Had the lines held against the initial charge, the Francoists would have been forced to retreat. Everyone broke ranks and began to flee in terror, as the Francoists rode forward like knights of old, just cutting men down with their sabers. I made up my mind to leave Spain that same day, technically deserting the Republicans. Yep, I was saving my own hide.
I crossed into Portugal after traveling on foot and in various vehicles that I 'acquired,' and then procured passage back to the United States, landing in Wilmington."

"The return home was bittersweet, because you guys were the only ones meeting me at the dock. Five fuckers in slick suits waiting at the docks; one of them even had a Monitor leveled at me as I walked down the gangway. What was I gonna do? Jump into the sound and let the undertow drag me down? Nope; I just bit the bullet and complied with your orders."

"Those orders found me in a federal courtroom, with some ancient prosecutor calling me a "subversive Red traitor" and a "morally-repugnant swill-merchant." I got called a lot of colorful things, accused of stuff that I did and didn't do; the best one I heard was that I personally ferried Leon Trotsky around the Caribbean. Hah! That's one of the charges that you fellas slapped on me, too! Fucking hilarious! That whole trial was a spectacle. In the end, they gave me thirty years at the Rock."

"I have faced some shit in my time, but being surrounded by crooks and killers who had nothing to do but wait for their life sentences - and their lives - to expire? I've never had to be more on my guard than at Alcatraz. I knew Al Capone there; he taught me how to cobble shoes together, despite the fact that he was clearly going all squirrelly. Other guys, tough guys who knew about Capone, always tried messing with him. To see this guy -
this larger-than-life gangster - get bullied and tormented at the point where the syph had addled his brain... let's just say that a couple of those guys were unlucky enough to bump into me and my lead pipe in an empty laundry room or shower. You guys even got me for that; two charges of First-Degree Murder, which meant that I was a lifer in the federal system."

"But then, you guys came back and recruited me to fight in the war. Fuck the sidelines, so I appreciate that. I was commissioned into the Army as a Captain, and after some due training and refamiliarization with my 'old' job, I was off to fight Hitler. Whomever said

Something about now.

I know that Clark isn't terribly interesting like everyone else, but I wouldn't mind some prior history with other characters.

Asks for RP sample in the app, however I haven't done too much forum-style RP. I have done years of DnD however, does that count for anything?

Well, unfortunately I can't really get a gauge of your DnD skills or forum RPing abilities.

Though if you write something very, very good, I could let you in.

Player Character App (Shadow Ops Operative)

Name: Carrie Thompson
Gender: ♀
Age: 17
D.O.B.: June 20th (totally not a reference to anything)
Physical Description and/or Picture: Left
Species: Werewolf
Nationality: American
Ethnicity: Scots-Irish
Religion (if any): Pantheist
Bio: always a tomboy, Carrie was used to coming home at night covered in scrapes & cuts, bleeding and dirty, since she was at least six years old. Her sense of adventure and desire to see the world was much stronger than her sister's, who was more timid and preferred to stay at home. When she was nine, Marcie fell in a creek while looking for her. Their father rescued her, and after that, Carrie became fixated on protecting her sister, never leaving her side since.

Her father being a coal miner who worked in a mine the next town over, and her mother passing away before she was born, meant he often had to leave them alone for days on end. Like most men of the era, he was uncomfortable discussing womanly issues, meaning Carrie often had to deal with and figure them out on her own. One night, after getting into bed, she showed Marcie a way she had learned to "feel good." the experience left Marcie blissful, but gradually gave way to guilt. The two continued with their initially harmless experiments, which began to morph and become less and less innocent. Carrie saw it as confirmation her sister was more than just her sister, and began to grow romantic feelings for her. While she had previously teased Marcie about boys, or joked around whenever one approached her, she now became paranoid and snappy when they did.

When they were fourteen, Marcie accidentally killed her father after transforming into wolf form for the first time. After a tearful confession to Carrie, the latter helped her bury his body and erase any evidence from the house. The stress was too much, and Marcie began to transform regularly, Carrie used an old shed to keep her from being discovered during her transformations. The stress added to that awakened Carrie's own latent inner wolf, and the two realized neither would be able to live their old life.

After Carrie stole enough for them to live a few weeks on, they ran away from home and started living in the West Virginian hills, transforming into wolf form and coming down to hunt deer, squirrels, and any other wildlife they could find. Marcie came across a moonshiner who had set up a still, and Carrie made short work of him.

Around a year later, they accidentally entered into a Armstrong clan's territory. Carrie being her brash self, ended up losing a paw and part of her snout (although they regenerated once she reentered human form). The thing that kept them from being killed was the clan leader recognized their scent as similar to his daughter's, and found out they were the children of his daughter. He accepted them into the clan, making their lives much easier. Carrie took to the new life like a duck to water, pleased to know that now she did not have to depend solely on herself or Marcie.

When WW2 broke out, Carrie was largely apathetic, although she became more excited when she figured out it would mean a chance to sink her teeth into some humans. A discovery she had kept secret from Marcie, she had developed a liking for human flesh since eating the moonshiner. After Pearl Harbor struck, Marcie announced she wanted to enlist, and Carrie went along. Partially to help her sister, and partially to make a meal of some humans.
Psychological Profile: psychopathic and amoral, Carrie is mainly kept in check by her sister, who she's developed unhealthy feelings for.
Why do you fight?: mainly because she wants to satiate her bloodlust and sink her teeth in a few Axis soldiers. It makes no difference to her whether Germany wins and overruns remaining Europe, or whether the Allies win and march to Berlin, she'll get to sink her teeth in no matter what. But also because her sister is determined to see the war through, and she can't bear to abandon her.
Defining Quote: "You'll lose the hand that touches my sister."

Name: Marcie Thompson
Gender: ♀
Age: 17
D.O.B.: June 20th (if you're looking for a reference, you're going to be disappointed -whistles innocently-)
Physical Description and/or Picture: Right.
Species: Werewolf
Nationality: American
Ethnicity: Scots-Irish
Religion (if any): Christian (Baptist)
Bio: the opposite of her sister, Marcie was a sweet and sensitive child who preferred to stay home and sew or make tea. However, she regretted she didn't spend enough time with her sister, who was fond of going out and playing in the woods. Marcie decided to put aside her sensitivity and go out and find her sister. While searching, she ended up tripping on a root and falling into a creek. Luckily her father heard her cries and rushed to save her. She lost consciousness, but she vaguely remembered in a half-conscious state, lying in a warm bed while her crying sister hugged her and declared she'd never leave her again. Marcie never discovered whether the experience was real, but true to it, Carrie did as she said, becoming incredibly protective of her.

When she was twelve, her father went the next town over to work. The night was cold and she kept tucked under the covers. Carrie got into the bed with her, not unusual since their house had only a few rooms. Then she propositioned "I know a way to feel good and warm." the experience left Marcie blissful, but gave way to guilt. She didn't know what it was that she felt, but something told her it wasn't right, or would be looked down upon, so she shouldn't say anything to her father, schoolmates, or teacher. Carrie seemed to change after the experience, becoming more attached to her, now becoming suspicious and ready to snap at boys who approached her.

The worst day of her life was a month after her fourteenth birthday. She had started menstruation, school had become harder and her teacher stern, her father more demanding, and she constantly worried her relationship with her sister would be uncovered. Without knowing what fully happened, when her father smacked her, she transformed into wolf form and killed him, wrecking much of their kitchen due to her size. When Carrie came home, Marcie tearfully confessed and broke down about how she was going to jail. Her sister responded by burying the body, cleaning up the house, and trying her best to erase all evidence.

After the experience, Marcie began to transform regularly. Her sister responded by using the old family shed to keep her contained during transformations. In a few weeks, her sister started transforming too, and they both realized they couldn't live their old life with no room to hide their wolfish secret.

For two weeks, Carrie stole supplies for them, something Marcie was initially reluctant about, but accepted since there was no alternative. She constantly worried about her transformations, until they finally managed to make their departure. After stealing a map from school, the duo traveled east and began living up in the hills of West Virginia. While lonely, Marcie took comfort in having Carrie with her. When transforming into wolf form, they would come down to hunt deer, squirrels, other wildlife, and possibly some cattle. She came across a moonshiner who had set up a still, and Carrie made short work of him. The experience brought back Marcie's guilt, and she swore never to eat human flesh.

A year later, while moving to new hunting ground after their old one began to see a decrease in wildlife, they were countered by members of the Armstrong clan informing them they were on their territory, and if they did not leave, they would face consequences. Marcie tried being diplomatic, while Carrie got into a fight and paid for it by having her paw torn off and a good portion of her snout mauled. Fortunately, the clan leader appeared, and they were saved by the fact he recognized their scent as similar to his daughter's. It was then that Marcie learned her mother was a werewolf. They were let into the clan due to this blood relation, and Carrie took to it like a duck to water, forgetting her previous enmity towards the Armstrong's, and enthusiastically joining them on the hunt. Marcie, on the other hand, still harbored guilt and doubts.

When WW2 broke out, Marcie began to read the newspapers, hating what was happening in Europe and Asia, and desperately wanting to help. She decided she wanted to help people, and had plans to join the French Foreign Legion, before Pearl Harbor. After that, she decided to fight in the American army, and told her clan she planned to enlist. Carrie was reluctant at first, but accepted and went with her.
Psychological Profile: empathetic and kindhearted, to the point of having a Messiah complex. Constantly cheerful and optimistic, although slightly unnerved around her sister, especially with the prospect of being alone.
Why do you fight?: out of desire to help the subjugated people of Europe, who are being oppressed by the Nazi forces.
Defining Quote: "If I don't help save the world, who will?"
