I interpreted it the same way Mnar did, personally. It seemed like she was claiming that runes were unnecessary altogether, and that Sophie was being kinda stupid. :/

So, the reason I didn't address the translation device in my IC post is thus: I have some questions regarding its mode of operation.

Does it translate everything into the person's native language, or into English?
Does it translate every language the person speaks into the listener's language, or does it only translate English into the listener's language?
Does it translate text, or only speech?
If there's something that can't be translated, what happens?
