Just let the players themselves decide. If their character doesn't mind, they get the carving, if instead they mind, they get the painted on rune, with the caveat that it may "go off at any moment and you leave you communications-less deep in enemy territory."

Also, I've had a question for a while. Does magic tire magi and witches? Does it use up their prana (or some other form of energy)? I've been assuming it does, but it hasn't really come into play until now.
