How large was the nuclear exchange? I suppose it wasn't large enough to completely turn the world into a waste land.
The total number of casualties by the end are totaled to be one billion. Now this is a three way war between three superpowers. The U.S, the Soviet Union, and the European Federation. It started when Soviet bombers stationed in Mexico City (Mexico is a stalinist state in this universe instead of Cuba) received confirmation to drop the bombs on the specified target.
It was completely a false alarm, and both countries worked desperately to solve it. While some of the bombers were shot down in rural areas to be contained three made it to New York, and delivered their load which comprised of five hydrogen bombs. 400 to 500 milion worldwide died within the blast zones while the rest died from the general chaos, looting, radiation poisoning, and other attributed conditions by January 1st, 1979, and onward.
So the U.S government retreated to Raven Rock, and with the Soviet Union designed a lottery system to ensure appropriate retribution. It was decided that the European Federation would be weakened as well to ensure no superpower came out on top, and large cities were essentially picked out of a bowl to be decided as targets. Farmlands, and other vital areas were to be left alone, but humanity would still suffer. Within 2 hours all targets were picked with the first U.S target being Moscow.
From 1979-1984 the world picked up the pieces, and in the U.S Remembrance day was established on December 7th to commemorate the dead while also leaning toward becoming an authoritarian police state. The Soviet Union on the other hand started to liberalize while the European Federation became incredibly militaristic. New York never did recover since most of it sank into the ocean, and mass extinctions occurred all over the planet. The Omega Cities however did have massive reserves of animal DNA so it was a small consolation. Nuclear summers, and Nuclear winters became commonplace well into the late 1990s, but have sort of stabilized after all these years.
As a result of the war the U.S with the backing of ever more powerful corporations had the Global Defense System established. In reality this was the ultimate trump card to prevent a second atomic war. The cost being life on 4 continents would be erased completely to save the U.S, and its way of life. Naturally the other world powers are rather wary of angering the U.S.
