There is a ball, which needs to advance to the in-zone. If you are tackled you have a down. You get four downs until you turn the ball over to the other team. You can punt the ball before turning it over to give the other team more yards to cover until they reach the in-zone. When you score a touchdown you get six points, with an oppertunity to get extra points.
