If you're looking to start out with his work, get Revelation Space, or House of Suns. They capture the essence of his writing style beautifully. Or get Blue Remembered Earth, it's one of his more recent works and is brilliant.
If you like a noir/Hard Science Fiction Space Opera cross-over you should go for Century Rain, it's a piece of artwork.
