It'd take about as long as posting for me to explain the proper direction to take Shojiro in, as well as the specific level of conduct he exhibits. If he had been along for a much longer time it might have worked. But as of yet people just don't know anough about him to do that realistically.

If you're looking to start out with his work, get Revelation Space, or House of Suns. They capture the essence of his writing style beautifully. Or get Blue Remembered Earth, it's one of his more recent works and is brilliant.

If you like a noir/Hard Science Fiction Space Opera cross-over you should go for Century Rain, it's a piece of artwork.
