Beyond Humanity (OOC/Open)

Postby Skappola » Sat Jun 06, 2015 2:27 pm

(This is a reboot of the earlier Transhuman World RP)

IC: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=344979

Introduction
It is the year 2100, and the world is highly divided. The worldwide renaissance of the mid-21st century has yielded spectacular advances in nearly all fields of technology. The idea of Transhumanism - or the improvement of Humanity through the use of advanced technology - gained power in the world's governments. Cybernetic implants allowed for spectacular advances in mathematics and the sciences, genetic engineering soon lengthened the average lifespan to well over 100, and instantaneous telepathic communication implants ensured the world would be more connected than ever. The world had utopia within its sights, but failed to reach it. The high costs of mass implementation of Transhumanist ideas forced governments to prioritize specific fields. As their citizens integrated Transhumanism into their daily lives, they found themselves increasingly isolated from those under governments prioritizing different strains of Transhumanism. As tensions rose, former allies began to drift apart, giving rise to alliances based around Transhumanist ideologies rather than political ideologies. The anti-cyborg riots of 2087 solidified the divide, as governments split over the proper response and began a volley of condemnations against one another. After a failed attempt by the UN to enforce the Transhuman Equality Bill in the US, which was reportedly discriminating against Collectionists, numerous nations withdrew - eventually leading to its total collapse. Earth now stands at the brink of a nuclear world war, one from which it may not recover.

Meanwhile, in countries which have not chosen a side, riots between various Transhumanist groups and anti-Transhumanists are very common, sometimes resulting in civil wars in already unstable nations. These countries are often completely unable to keep the peace in large tracks of land where warlords or gangs have taken over. In these countries, Corporations have been able to fill the void, providing select neighborhoods protection in exchange for loyalty. Terrorist organizations have also been able to take quite a bit of control, many larger ones succeeding more than ever at achieving their goals.

Transhumanist Factions:
Image
The Biodirectionists
The Biodirectionists believe in the advancement of Humanity through the use of genetic engineering. Biodirectionists are particularly well known for having very long and relatively disease-free lives, extending up to 160 years. Due to extensive genetic engineering, many are able to perform feats of superhuman strength and stamina up until the very end - making them particularly popular amongst poorer countries which continue to struggle with disease and rely heavily on manual labor. Additionally, recent advances in genetic engineering has made it significantly cheaper than other forms of Transhumanism, further increasing its popularity amongst the poor. Biodirectionism is also particularly popular amongst doctors and medical companies, who see genetic engineering as the solution to numerous illness-related woes.

The Immortals
The Immortals a subset of Biodirectionists dedicated to achieving biological immortality (preferably within their lifetime), seeking to stay on the cutting edge of genetic modification to keep them alive in the meantime. Recently, Immortals have been rapidly gaining in popularity as scientists close in on a potential fix for the Hayflick limit, potentially giving the Immortals the immortality they desire.

The New Gaians
The New Gaians believe in the use of genetic engineering to become one with nature. This can range from the tweaking of genes to become more environmentally friendly to complete overhauls of parts of the Human genome, giving them powers like the ability to photosynthesize or breath underwater. The latter tends to be much more dangerous, as the technology is still new, but many Gaians see no other choice in their quest to rejoin nature.

The Prometheans
Combining many of the advanced genetic modification ideas from the New Gaians and the idea of biological immortality from the Immortals, the Prometheans seek to ascend the traditional shackles of Humanity through extremely aggressive genetic engineering. The Prometheans are the most radical variant of the Biodirectionists, as they do not seek to merely improve upon humanity like other Transhumanists. Instead, Prometheans seek to become something altogether different - a new species combining the best genes the world's fauna and flora have to offer. They seek to become the perfect organism.

The Revivalists
The New Ancestor Cult in China, Syndrome Corp in the US, and the Cult of the Dead in Mexico have brought the revivalists fame and controversy, many of the members having to go into hiding from mobs. The Revivalists are closing in on the secret to the revival of recently deceased corpses and organs, and are determined to use this invention to its full potential. They are hated by many, but often work closely with certain strains of Transhumanists, notably the Immortals, who want to ensure their own survival by any means necessary.

Image
The Cyberneticists
The Cyberneticists believe in the advancement of Humanity through the use of genetic implantations. Cyberneticists, while having the ability to perform superhuman tasks of strength and speed through limb implants, are usually focused on the brain. Particularly popular implants are the Steward v24.597, which functions as a small supercomputer allowing the user to calculate complex equations with ease; the Infobank 2000, which serves as a vast storehouse of knowledge available at a thought's notice; and the IFRD-5, which assists the user in diplomatic duties by improving verbal and nonverbal communication and recognition of nonverbal cues. Due to the high cost of cybernetic implants, they are usually only used by high-ranking diplomats, wealthy politicians, executives and some scientists and professors who are given them for free. Many top universities have begun to give out free cybernetic implants to their professors, greatly improving the quality of university teaching.

The Intellectuals
Cybernetic Implants are particularly popular amongst intellectuals, who have been known to use them to great success in their academic pursuits. Cybernetic Intellectuals are particularly common in major Computer Science companies, who are seeking to change cybernetic implants to fully-optical computing, increasing their speeds to unfathomable levels. Cybernetic Intellectuals hope that computers will be able to catapult human intellect to spectacular levels, allowing Humanity to finally escape the shackles of ignorance.

The Cybernetic Egalitarians
Cybernetic Egalitarians see the good done by Cybernetics, but instead of seeking to improve upon the current implants, they seek to make these implants cheap enough to distribute to the general populace. This way, the intellectual divide will finally be destroyed, and humanity can live as one without academic elitism and the shunning of those of lower intelligence. The Egalitarians are highly popular in the poor of Cyberneticist countries, and commonly find themselves in conflict with the Intellectuals, who do not care nearly as much about making the implants cheap. The Supposed "Egalitarians" are also popular in certain low-cost retail corporations, who are merely seeking to lower the cost of cybernetic implants for the sake of profit.

The Transformationists
The Transformationists believe in going one step further from traditional cybernetic implants, replacing the majority or entire body with metal. This, in the most extreme cases, can include downloading brain onto a harddrive through the use of the Voransky process. Transformationists remain extremely rare, both due to the exorbitant cost and social isolation resulting from such a transformation. The Transformationists have come in the news recently, as eccentric billionaire and second richest man on Earth, Jenson Harvey, has successfully made the full transformation from man to machine.

Image
The Uploaders
In the mid-21st centuries, massive advancements in large-scale optical computing, cybernetic implants and scanner technology allowed for the creation of life-like fully-immersive environments - immersive to the point that the average citizen can't tell the difference between the real world and the simulation. Additionally, advanced protein & neuron simulation is beginning to allow rudimentary full-scale simulation of the human brain. The Uploaders seek to combine these technologies by "uploading" their minds into massive super-computers, where they plan to live immortally in these virtual utopias. The Uploaders are becoming increasingly popular in the richest countries of the world, failing to gain a foothold in developing countries, likely due to the high expense of the mind uploading packages.

The Full Virtual Uploaders
Full Virtual Uploaders use the oldest process of virtual uploading, which essentially consists of "copying" all the information in the brain onto a computer. The "person" continues to function within the computer, though it is unknown whether it the original conciousness or a copy of the original conciousness which is functioning.

The Voransky Process Uploaders
The Voransky process slowly moves the information of the brain to cybernetic parts or computers by only replacing certain parts of the brain at a time. Eventually the entire brain will be replaced with artificial components. A person can function with half an organic brain and half a cybernetic brain during the process. Theoretically, it should transfer the original conciousness, though it is more time-consuming than full virtual uploading and the philosophical implications of this method are still unclear.

The Biological Uploaders
To assuage those who fear that their consciousness won't *truly* be transferred, biological "uploading" keeps the old brain, simply merging it with the computer. This, unfortunately, does not guarantee immortality, and requires people to stay behind to care for the brains, but it at the very least does not instantly destroy the consciousness, which many philosophers fear happen with the former two processes.

Image
The Connectionists
Connectionists believe in uniting Humanity through the use of special genetic engineering techniques and telepathic communication implants. Modern Communicationist societies distribute mandatory implants which allow for telepathic communication between others with the same implant over very large distances - like instantaneous texting. However, this is only temporary. Eventually, Communicationists seek to eventually modify the genetic structure of the Human brain, changing their mentality to force people to act communally rather than individually. Then, children with this genetic modification are to be trained with telepathic communication implants from birth. Incremental changes from this point will allow for all thoughts to be transferred inadvertently, theoretically creating the first human hivemind. Connectionists are often seen as somewhat creepy by much of society, but have become very popular in parts of Asia.

Human Collective Connectionists
The more mainstream force of the Connectionists imagine a society in which everyone is more or less individual, functioning essentially independently, with constant ideas and thoughts coming in from all other members of the society. They find themselves in conflict with the "True Hivemind Connectionists"

True Hivemind Connectionists
True Hivemind Connectionists believe that the hivemind should essentially eliminate the idea of the individual. All minds in the collective would contribute to the thought process of the collective, which makes major decisions. Individuals would still be under control of their own bodies, but would be fully subservient to the collective's desires.

Anti-Transhumanist Factions

The Religious
The religious have a number of varying reasons to oppose Transhumanism, depending on their faith. They generally despise Biodirectionists, moderately oppose Cyberneticists, and have varying opinions of Connectionists and Uploaders.

(There are too many subgroups to list)

The Equalists
The Equalists believe that transhumanism creates a major inbalance of power between those who chose to become transhumanists and those who refuse to, and so should opposed on the basis of equality. In general, Equalists aggressively despise Cyberneticists, mildly oppose Biodirectionists, disagree with Connectists, and are neutral towards Uploaders.

The Destructionists
The Destructionists are disgusted at what humanity has become, both morally and physically. Unlike the Equalists and Religious, however, they believe that Humanity has long since past the point of no return, and so seek to end it once and for all. The Destructionists are unique in that reasons for this belief vary wildly from group to group, the only thing uniting them being their dedication to the destruction of the now irreversibly abberant Human species. Increasingly common in Afghanistan, the mountains of Columbia, and parts of Tibet, Destructionist groups have only recently caught the world's attention following the numerous suicide bombings in Baghdad and raids on a Chinese Nano-bot testing facility researching the Grey Goo scenario.

EST - it was about 7:00 AM when I sent that TG. Also, I send TGs and post things at all hours of the night and occasionally early in the morning, usually whenever I get around to it. Usually between 3-12 PM.

Country Name: Greater Germany
Location (Please mark on Map): Cant do... I'll find you something else. But here it is. germany, half of poland, austria,
Population: 110 mil
Government Description:
In Greater Germany at the age of 18, everyone is required to take a IQ test (and various other tests). Those that score in the top 1% are given the best genetically modified bodies (moved through mind uploading), and have moderate cybernetic implants. This is the aristocracy of Germany. The top 0.01% highest scorers are chosen to be part of the government, and are given extensive cybernetic implants. Since there is a slight problem that some of these people don't want to be a part of government. Since there is MASSIVE unrest that dumber people can never be a part of government, the nation puts a lot of money into propaganda and controlling the nation, along with people disappearing. The most used and effective system of nation control is Human Collective Connectionists/semi-True Hivemind Connectionists, which makes it so people are happy with what they have, and also have a bunch of different ideas.

Economy Description: Manufacturing

Military Description: Exactly 1 million regular soldier. All are volunteers. Joining the military is a good idea in Greater Germany, as you gain a extensively modified body, with high abilities than a normal human could hope for, and become human collective (with slight hive mind so they don't run away from certain death) (also some slight cybernetic implants that are designed to be useful in war). Since so many people volunteer for the military, the government chooses the people that will be the most loyal to the cause. Around half the soldiers are used as police to guard the nation, and also keep the separatists in poland... suppressed. The other group are doing their best to destabilize Russia and China.

History and General Description:
With Russia becoming a bully in the eastern european area, those nations started turning towards the west (except Ukraine and Belarus (Russia got hungry). With the threat of Russia invading Poland and the other eastern countries (and Denmark), they got a massive credit downgrading, so the economies of those nations started falling apart. Russia funded Russian separatists in Poland and the baltic countries. Germany intervened, saving Poland, but taking the western half of Poland for itself. This angered most of the world, but over time they accepted it. A wave of Anschluss in Austria caused a referendum in 2040, where 40% voted for Anschluss, and 60% voted against Anschluss. Mainly it was the older generation that was against Anschluss. By 2060, more people wanted Anschluss than not, and so they had a referendum, which narrowly passed. With the diversity of technology in Greater Germany, most people have a slight feeling of rebellion and unrest, with "Future-violence" (i.e. Normals vs Promethians vs others).

Subgroup (Optional): The Promethians/The intellectuals

BTW: The current Promethian body only came into being 20 years ago, so now people are starting to be able to have kids. only now.

Btw, Skappola, a question:

Could we have both a country app and a corporation app, where a corporation have a differing ideological stands as the country? It doesn't apply to me right at this moment, but I thought it may have an interesting vibe to lore-creation aspect if a corporation (or a terrorist group) manages to convert a country from one faction idea to next.

Speaking of, how much do factions play a role in the area? Is the world to a point where these factions hate each other, or is it just a lifestyle choice like what we have with political parties?

Yes, that works - actually sounds quite interesting. I'm planning to do the same since Voransky-Sung is an uploader company and there aren't many countries who seem too eager to give up their workforce to a massive supercomputer.

It would depend on the region. More developed and stable countries would simply view it as a lifestyle choice, while unstable or regions under the control of authoritarian regimes will be often openly hostile to those of different transhuman philosophies. In other words, it would function in a similar way to religion, but with much more fighting and hatred due to transhumanism being a new, volatile concept. A big factor that would determine views towards other transhuman factions would be how aggressively the government has taken a side.

That's actually something that I need to keep track of.

Since I was the one who sort of asked for Promethean choice, I am sticking to it. However, should (more like when) the final checks are being made to completely transform entire population into new humanity beyond homosapian, there will be more than a few buks from other political activists in the country. I like the concept and I cannot wait to explore the potentials !!

It is... complicated.

But I felt like since you have given me the opportunity, I can spin this off really nicely with current Korean trends. Namely, Koreans' desire to obtain their perfect image of beauty even at the cost of plastic surgery (although... "their" image is more like "THE" image standardized by media XDDD) as well as Chaebol Business Practice and shaky economic stands alongside looming potential reunification.

Btw, which country ARE you planning? I haven't got a glimpse of what you were in the last RP

I was playing as a corporation in the last RP - Voransky-Sung - but I am planning to play as a major country in this one. I'm going to wait for a bit to see what nations get taken, however, so I can incorporate it into my own country's history.

Country Name: Incorporated States of Korea
Location:
Image

Population: 70 million
Government Description:
While democracy still exists in Korea in the way of elections, the individual parties of Korean government have since been replaced by the corporations, who spend great portion of their wealth into general welfare to gain public support. Even the smaller or foreign corporations apart from “the Greatest Four” rank of TNCs must pay attention to public welfare which has become a common business practice in Korea. In exchange, however, underneath the democratic welfare state lies a cruel truth of Korea under the ruling hand of few Chaebol groups and their respective families, who enjoy diplomatic immunity over the masses as kings and princes of the land. Although this is not a new thing for Korea since the beginning of the Republic and through the reunification, the legal and official contracts to showcase their privileged position is disturbing to many both within Korea as well as to foreign agencies. Luckily, these elite families have seemed to thus far learned noblesse oblige of old, and have practiced good political and ethical constraints. But the ever-looming potential of corporate dictatorship of one party should one of the Greatest Four gain too much political power is never too far from Koreans’ minds.

Economy Description:
The economy of the nation is extremely skewed towards few sectors with massive transnational corporations known as “the Greatest Four.” Namely, the Inovatium Solutions, Danwol (단월) Group, HS (합법적 사기꾼) Foundation, and Jovial Ltd control the country both politically and economically, to a point where these massive Chaebol groups play a crucial role in supporting near 50% of domestic employment. Nearly all sectors of economy is completely overshadowed by these corporations in that even the smallest business sectors rely on protection of these TNCs to continue their business operations.

Since the Great Unrest of early 21st Century, the shattered government has been picked up by the abovementioned TNCs in hopes to preserve the Korean values in the Peninsula. While this means that corporatocracy is fully established and they enjoy great political power in the area, these TNCs are also obligated to create safety-nets and welfare for the masses in Korea. Although this has caused disputes and even inter-corporate conflicts in the early eras of implementation, the TNCs have since warmed up to the idea, where TNCs generally spend nearly 5% of their revenue towards improving the welfare of the nation. This has led to fierce customer loyalty to citizens long-deprived of attention of any governing entity, and Koreans have since accepted the unholy marriage of purest Chaebol practices and democracy.

Due to this corporate welfare status of the nation, the previous fear of open market has since evaporated from the minds of politicians and public alike, as Korean is ranked as one of the most open markets in the world. However, although government regulations do not play a hand in Korean market, the influence of the Greatest Four can be felt to foreign powers, which risks horrendous failure in order to keep up with the welfare policies that these firms have taken within their home country.

Military Description: 1.8 million manpower is contributed to the country’s defense
Although numbers have significantly decreased from its time of division, the reunified Korea nevertheless spend significant amount of resources in military to check their political interest in their area jammed with superpowers. Although the draft of either side has been lowered to voluntary services, many Koreans still desire to enlist into the military due to government-supported biological augmentation procedures. While it may sound unappealing to other nation’s citizens, the trend towards “perfected beauty” during the beginning of 21st Century never let off in Korea, to a point where now Inovatium Solutions is the world’s leading sector in biological reconstruction of human anatomy. As the threshold of perfection rose, so did its cost to a point where gene-therapy to reshape the very fundamentals of humanity is, although extremely expensive, a desirable treatment for Koreans. This has led towards voluntary military service and free biological augmentation during service extremely appealing to Korean youth, which has been flocking into the military in search of finding their inner beauty.

The eager transformation of biological augmentation has reshaped Korean warfare in mind, where individuals are much more valued than vehicles. While this does not mean that Koreans completely neglect the use of traditional weapons, more than third of Korea’s total military force is focused on Special Forces, where augmented soldiers are sent across the globe to fulfill their clandestine agenda for the Korean government. This has given Korea a fighting chance against more technologically and militarily advanced nations, where human element of Koreans were able to even the playing field against the superior firepower of others. One such example is Defense Security Division (DSD) of Korea responsible for intelligence and counterintelligence. Through clever use of augmented humans, the resilience of human hackers were able to thwart the cyber-attacks from neighboring hackers in an attempt to siphon sensitive government information using superior computer technologies. The elites of Korean military continue to grow on top of these successes, to a point where rumors of completely doing away with standard army in favor of more tactical divisions have been circulating.

History and General Description:
The story starts in Korean Peninsula during the early decades of 21st Century. The long-awaited reunification comes too suddenly, where a instability of North Korea breaks the threshold and collapses. Left with no choice, the government of South assimilates the North, but with much instability in the region. This, alongside the corrupt and degrading economy of Korea at the time completely disintegrates the public trust in the government, where open revolt occurs in nationwide scale. The historians later call this era “Great Unrest,” where people in all sectors rebelled against their way of life to restart Korea from fresh.

The first real turning point came with the destruction of well-known Chaebol families. The mob turned their eyes to corrupt corporations and hunted these families even in foreign lands. The terrorist attacks in the sanctuaries of these Chaebols in foreign soil caused a stir in the global community as well as heart and minds of Koreans themselves. Before the UN decisions on this matter could come to a conclusion, however, the wealthy were quick to react to the issue: the rising pharmaceutical company at the time, Inovatium Solutions, was quick to “appease the populous” by employing domestic workers and creating a safe environment within the company headquarters. Through continued welfare and protection, Inovatium rose to fame as leading medical company in Korea, able to fill the gap of many Chaebol Groups whose leadership were either killed or fled. The success of Inovatium created a new class of capitalists in Korea: ones who recognized their nobility as a responsibility to provide towards their workers. Through private welfare and stability, the entire nation soon stabilized within short period of time.

Rest of the century was period of rebuilding for unified Korea under the guiding hand of corporations. The government soon officially changed their government stands to discontinue party system in favor of corporate system, followed by public criminalization of previous Chaebol family alongside “corrupt” politicians. This radical execution of the old political structure gave new unified Korean government as well as new capitalists the legitimacy to the leadership which further assisted in their reconstruction of corporate Korea.
The Incorporated States of Korea is economic powerhouse, although highly unstable due to few corporations owning so much of domestic market. Although corporate influence can be felt in every sector, however, the neo-Chaebol behaviors mimic almost that of nobles in Britain during the height of British Empire: Noblesse Oblige. This has allowed Koreans, notorious for being uncooperative and headstrong against authorities, to accept current status of Korea and coexistence of capitalist elites alongside democracy.

While the second “Miracle of Han River” since the Great Unrest spearheaded by the Greatest Four for the latter half of the 21st Century has created unparalleled prosperity in all of the history of Korea, the democratic equality is current being put into question. Inovatium Solutions has been unchallenged majority party in Korea since the Great Unrest, and there is no sign of change of leadership. Many political scientists and analysts alike show their concerns for potential dictatorship of Inovatium Solutions. While the conservative and older Koreans seem to support Inovatium as a longstanding tradition, few younger generations have begun to question the legality of a group that can hold office for so long.

Alongside the concerns, a new side of Korea is also stirring awake. Although the country’s policy has been solely pivoted in the Biodirectionists camp for so long under the guidance of Inovatium, Korea is also the home of IT innovation, where national digitization is still a major topic of debate among the scholars. The push for the Uploader policies is still very much of a reality among the pockets of Korea. Namely, Danwol Group which has inherited the IT leadership from Samsung Elecronics is constantly pushing for more moderate approach to polarized development of the country. The struggle between Danwol and Inovatium is an issue that is always hotly discussed among the people in Korea as Korean youth is fully divided between achieving outward perfection or virtual happiness.
