Power Origin: Forced mutation through science, underwent multiple experiments to unfortunately get his powers which left portions of his body ruined

Weaknesses: His respirator is needed for breathing, so any damage to that could be detrimental to Helms. He does have some psychological disconnects from emotion due to the torturous gaining of his powers. Without natural created smoke or catalysts for his power, his own powers are limited to how much he can generate without nature.

Personality: Gregory is a direct, yet quiet man. He will talk when he sees if his voice is needed to reason with others or make agreements/deals with interested customers of his services. As a warrant officer for the British Army, he was a strategist and liked to make plans on how to follow through with his jobs or objectives. He is disconnected from reality and the regular life because of how he sees his ruined body, he acts like an outsider in public view. His mind is also very ruined from post-traumatic stress disorder, leaving him to have painful hallucinations of his torture and his violent past in the military.

He began his service as a young Private in the British Armed Forces in 1999 at the age of 22, after being coerced by his benevolent war veteran father. He would serve as a motor transport operator whether it be supplies, soldiers, wounded, civilians, etc. which would earn him the nickname "Helmsman" by his CO and fellow squad mates. While he loved to drive, Gregory wanted to go beyond the driver's seat in his tours of duty. His chance eventually came as he was climbing to the ranks for his prolonged service and his willingness to see the mission through. When he was deployed to the war-zones in the Middle East, Gregory's life took a twist of fate in 2002. The young Warrant Officer found himself in the middle of an ambush along with his squad. The Humvee he was driving hit by an RPG while driving through hostile territory in a convoy. The impact sent Helms out of the vehicle, leaving his burned and cut all over his body. He was the sole survivor of that explosion, his passengers were either killed on impact or burnt to a crisp in the wreckage.

He was transported back home to recover in a military hospital. Unwilling to stayed locked up in recovery, Helms begged his COs to let him back into the fight; not for his nation or his fallen soldiers, for his own personal revenge for taking him out of the area. His COs gave him an opportunity to go into a science corps for the British Armed Forces, to which he eagerly obliged. But his eagerness was met with disappointment, he wasnt redeployed into the Middle East but sent up north to a governmental science facility in Ballater, England. He was a transport driver of materials and chemicals between facilities. There was no action, except the rage he had in rush hour traffic or in some punk-metal music on the radio. He grew bored. News came up of an experimental trial of which they could augment the human respiratory system. Gregory was the first in line for this trial, he had nothing else to do but meaningless drives on country roads and highways.

The experiment went from simple to complex. It involved injecting Gregory with numerous steroids, chemicals, and other products which turned his mind into a psychological wreck; altering his emotions, affecting his thought processes, and even making him relive painful memories. The worst part came when his lungs were put to the test against severe air qualities, the scientist's favorite being smoke. Over the course of these tests, his throat and lungs began to deteriorate from the inhalation of the harmful gas. Due to the smoke exposure, he was bound to a respirator for the rest of his life. After the experiment being a failure, he was sent back to a mental ward for his discharge from the military in 2003. When test results came back, doctors had found out that his cellular composition was mostly natural elements from the smoke exposure and the chemicals of the experimentation. The experiments had left his body to become smoke itself. With this knowledge, the military minds put him into a closed environment to see the extend of his being. He could control, generate, and even turn portions of his body into smoke; it was a marvel for those to see. In the presence of fire, Helms could create as much smoke as he wanted and used fire as a tool to create large areas of smoke. From 2004 to 2013, Helms was now a premier British commando for stealth or high contingency operations.

Over the course of his career, he became a proficient killer and fighter with his powers and weaponry. He was credited with some high profile jobs; recon, defense, infiltration, etc. Along with his career, he had attacks on his psyche and his sanity. Visions of the horrific torture of the experiments and his Middle East experience left him somewhat of a cold, yet efficient soldier. In 2013, his mental state became an issue with the government. Helms had no active missions for over 2 years and was left in a facility to his own sanity. Helms was honorably discharged from the Armed forces and sent out into the public view. His disability left him scarred and disassociated with the public, and from potential associates and bosses. With no other skills or ideas in his mind of how to go about his life, Gregory decided to do what he did best: become a soldier (for hire).
