I'm honestly thinking this could be a better character RP than a faction/nation one.

Really?

Just coming up with the terrain and geography alone would be difficult, resulting in plenty of arguments. In addition, that would only leave room for 12 RPers.

Not necessarily. You don't have to each control the city, but rather factions in the city. Shortage of resources could be a good cause of the cities splitting up into different factions

The terrain and geography is as you said. Flat land, chiefly dry and warm, a Mediterranean climate of sorts.

Perhaps people could control non-government organizations as well. Gangs or criminal syndicates.

I'd imagine so, but the question should be are there intelligent native lifeforms.

The galgoolazon: a giant carnivorous sandworm like snake species that is about the length of an 8 car passenger train that roams the sands of the desert looking for a meal, any meal it can grab. It's tough skins allows it to burrow in the sand to hide from other predators though its tail has a stinger on it which is used to inject a deadly fast acting venom on both predators and prey alike.

Small flipper like appendages assist it in burrowing below the surface. The galgoolazon is known to be able to burrow at least 30 feet below the sands but can only burrow through loose sand type sediment. It stays beneath for most of the day so as to avoid the sun which burn its skin and kill it or at least make it very very ill. Because of this they do most of their hunting at night.

It has no eyes or ears but hunts by feeling the vibrations on the surface and goes after anything that moves, sometimes springing out from below the sand at the last minute to catch prey. They are also capable of hunting above ground. They hunt in a manner similar to a shark in earth's oceans and just like with sharks if you kick them with a steel toed boot, they run away. Just be careful you don't kick the mouth because you'd loose your foot and leg due to the 200 razor sharp teeth in the creature's mouth that move back and forth like chainsaws. This movement is the source of the creatures horrific sound as it feeds.

The different human settlements have developed different slang terms for the creature.

The Toucans - Nomadic unintelligent slightly deer-looking bipedal creatures. They are omnivorous and appear to be very focused on tribal life with every person in the village performing a role. Originally they were called the Tuskens after the race in the movie franchise Star Wars but this evolved into a different name for them, the Toucan. Traditionally very non-aggressive, they are very afraid of the humans and their new weapons, so they never attack human settlements or towns, staying confined and running away at the mere scent of humans. Have learned to make crude weapons and tools. Sightings of Toucans have been rare and only a privileged few have seen the Toucan.

I think that a diverse biosphere and topography would be better than one of narrow focus. This is an alien world after all. Lets have some fun with it. Mountain regions, highland steppes, prairies, plains, jungles and deserts all coalesce to make a truly believable world. This option gives us a diverse environment that will never run out of options to entertain us.

I would suggest avoiding known animal names. In an IC post, if you were to say Toucan, I'm thinking this, not whats up above. In that regard, Seventh Sanctum and Fantasy Generator has some really great alien fauna names.

That's the point. People named them after Star Wars.

If you'd like. I like how you tie in the inspiration of the name to its actual source IC'ly. Personally, I would suggest something novel, so your creation isn't overshadowed in relation to the name it shares with the. What about Tolenep (Tol-e-nep), or Tsudecan (Su-de-can). Or any other name.

I must thank you all for your help. Will add the ideas to the OP shortly. Can anyone help me with formatting to make it more appealing?

How about this? It'd be cool if we had that big squid-thingy in the distance be lurking around in the oceans. We could give it a name like Leviathan or Sea Titan or something cool like that :p
