I may change my age, because the backstory I had planned was highly involved in the clone wars, but I don't know how we could tie in anything from 500 years ago into the plot....hmmm...

Wait, wait, wait. My old backstory works perfectly, if we can find some sort of fiat as to why he's still functioning 500 years later. WD-4D is intentionally made to be something of an enigma, and but he's got an extremely rich history if you can earn his trust. His master was killed, and he lived through the early days of the Empire when droids were widely feared and hated, thus he's a bit skittish. He's extremely distrustful of mandalorians and jedi: The mandolorians because they look a lot like the clones that killed hundreds of droids, and the jedi for...other reasons.

Maybe he was disabled by a scavenger using an Ion gun, but then the scavenger died in some unfortunate accident before WD-4D could be sold? But then that begs the question of how nobody managed to find him for so long.

But that would mean he's been running for 500 years with no memory wipe. And I don't think I could come up with 500 years of backstory.
