Ancient Amerland : Across Ancient Amerland, peasants look to the sky and see the burning orb of flame hurtling towards Choras. It's beautiful as it plummets towards the ground. Citadel of Light, Landsraad Hegemony

Brigands. Mountain bandits scarce better than the rocks upon which they scratched their living. They existed at the fringes of civilized society, aborbing malcontents, debtors, murderers, rapists. All the men the rule of order detested, who had forsaken the Light. Brightlord Avitus spat. Word had reached him of a veritable host of the scoundrels being marshaled under some sort of chief in the Westmarch, and their thousands, though unorganized, posed a threat to the little villages and logging towns in the eaves of the Peaks of Shadow. Thankfully a Great Company was marching in the region, on manuevers for the name-day of a nearby Citylord. They would crush the brigands, then move on to brighter things.

From the walled city of Havar the pikemen marched in their glittering rows of steel, his heavy cavalry at their back. The Sons had won the March with these men and their armored horses, their discipline and thundering charges enough to break dozens of lesser soldiers. Though not much use in a siege, that's what the sword infantry were for. Towards the low woods where the bandits were said to be encamped the host marched, their outriders about them, their weapons ready for war.

Sons of the Stars:
10 Wood, 10 Iron, 10 Steeds, 25 Stone | 10 Income
Mountain Valley: The March | No Fortifications | Capital: Spire of Eternity
Turn:

Dispatch Explorers to the east across the Mountains of Morning (bonus from Cunning?), with settlers

End: 18 Wood, 13 Iron, 14 Steeds, 19 Stone | 20 Income

Income: None This Turn

1 - Researched Metal Casting
2 - Train 3 Knights (-6 Iron, -6 Steeds)
3 - Built 2 Hulks (-6 Wood, -4 Iron)

Resources: 4 Wood, 4 Steeds, 25 Stone
Units:
Exaestuo: Richard Heart (5? points), 3 Knights (13.5 Points)
Eastern Sea, Exaestuo: 2 Hulks (10 points)

A pestilence filled the land. Everywhere in Exaestuo, even Domini the capital, death was present. Bodies, rotting corpses, littered the streets. Those who pulled the Death carts could not keep up, as even many of them had fallen ill. All around, the sick sheltered in hovels, covered in sores which oozed pus.

On the street corner, a man clad in the white robe of the Knight's Priesthood shouted at passing men and women. "Arise, holy followers of the One True Faith! Our glorious nation has been cursed by the heathen sinners, those Lakonians! They blaspheme the name of Our Lord, and offer perverse sacrifices to the false idol Sveta! They have cast a plague on us, poisoning our water, spreading the pestilence with their malicious devices! We must rise and purge the lands of these evildoers, these unrighteous fools!"

The crowd that has gathered roars in approval. They seek a scapegoat, and the Lakonians have all the right qualifications. The heathen scum shall be purged for what they've done.

A trumpet blast turns the crowd from their zealous rage, and Lo, they look upon no one other than High Priest Templar, Appointed One Richard Heart. Heart stands up on the platform that the speaker was on, and addresses the crowd. "Nay! 'Tis not the fault of Lakonian conspirators, heathen though they be, but our own!"

The crowd gasps, but they hang on every word as Heart continues. "This pestilence which has infected our land is the righteous wrath of Our Lord! There are yet those among us, among this very crowd, who do not cleave to the One True Faith! Look upon the death, you sinners! Repent, turn your hearts from wickedness towards the Light of the transcendent Lord! His way is made known to us through the revelations of the Holy Codex, yet still you say in your hearts, 'I will live for myself, and not the Way of the One True Faith'. For this, Our Lord has poured out his divine fury upon our nation, the punishment of sin. We must turn back to the Way! Flock to the fold of your shepherds, the Knightly Priests! Arise, and take up the sword of Light, to convert the heathen masses beyond our borders with renewed fervor!"

The crowd weeps, and yells, many tearing the clothes from their backs, others rushing to the Temples of the One True Faith, ton the white robes and red ichthus that marks the true zealot. Others remain quiet, glancing nervously at those around them, afraid that someone may point out their lack of zeal.

Eaves of Myrete Forest, Westmarch

The thunder rolled over the plains without breaking, the drumming of hooves and iron-shod feet without end. Nearly a thousand men were here marshaled beneath the Lord-Commander's banner, the Highprince's black fist upon the white field. Along the dirt roads and fields they had marched for a day and more, and before them the cookfires of the brigands stained the horizon with little plumes of black ash. In the vanguard Garin rode, next to his master, the Malleator. When the lord of the Sons had ought that needed breaking, he called upon the Malleator, Ultar, Lord of the Shattered Hills, to break it. It was said that when the earth was young, and gods yet walked it, ere law and reason was given to man, a great war between the perverted forces of the gibbering shadows and the lords of the night had been waged near the lands of the Karmat. In their blows they had crushed both earth and sky, and even the echo of their wars had entered the bloodlines of those men who had come to live in those lands when god and mighty champions were myths only again. Ever the storms rolled off the Synth to pummel the Shattered Hills, and her folk were hard, tough, immune to any force. Forged strong by the heat of their trials. The Malleator was no exception, and his sword looked almost to catch fire when he drew it, so many sigils had been inscribed in fire-stone upon its hilt.

He drew it now, and Garin hid a smile behind his visor as the great bear's voice rumbled across the lines of the Sons, and even to the woods where the bandits quaked in their roughshod lines. The blade, black as the eye of midnight, glistened in the sun's light like a pale flame of crimson.

"Men of the Highprince. Men of the March. Before you stand a rabble of brigands, of destroyers, burners, desolaters. They have teemed together for one purpose- to take life, steal, and rape their way across the lands of our people. Our lord the Highprince has sent me to throw them back into the searing light which they deserve. Let them drink the full dregs of their depravity. With me!"

At the words Garin put spurs to his great warhorse, sinew and muscle spurred to action in remembered training. With the wild calls of deep horns, the Horselords began to move. A sea of glittering steel, of ordered metal and glinting plate armor, rumbling like the tide towards the ragged line of men with sticks for spears and hammer sickles for swords. The charge gained speed, and the Blackguard's own muscles worked, lowering his lance from its upright position to the lethal ten foot length it was made to fight as. Upon its tip the shining star of death that was its point was white in the noonday sun, the white of fresh bone. Before him through the slit in his visor the Horselord could make out the faces of the foe- they were full of fear. To stand against a man upon an armored horse with only a twig in your hands took suicidal courage, and that was not a possession of many bandits. It was truly a wonder that their robber baron had managed to make them into any kind of force, the natural cowards that were criminals. But it would not save them.

The distance closed with each heartbeat. A half mile away, and some arrows fell amongst the onrushing armored wave, most as harmless as the rain. Some were better made than the hunting shafts of the average lowlife, and Garin saw a single Horselord sway in his saddle, swearing as his arm was grazed under his hauberk. But the white and the black rode on, a gathering tide. A quarter mile, and the trot became a gallop, each man spurring ahead to form as they were trained in the immense wedge that could break armies, topple kings, and crush nations. These brigands were nothing against it.

Contact. Garin hardly felt his lance pierce the first man, such was the shock of the impact as the brigand was carried along with his warhorse. Two men were splattered by the metal plating on the chest of his destrier, dashed aside like so much grass. He let the lance fall, and swept out his glaive in a clean motion, still at the gallop. Before him men were fleeing, casting aside their weapons to run faster from the utter devastation of the charge of the Horselords- but they could not run fast enough. One swipe with the polearm and a man fell with his shoulder almost separated from his body, another swing and the other dropped, neatly decapitated. It was all over in less time than it took to wheel his horse around. The bandits were broken, scattered like leaves before the winter wind, and scarce six men had fallen in the entire affray. Such was the power of the mounted man, trained from his youth, armored, and battle-bred.

Onwards came the Guardsmen, marching in their serried ranks, pikes on their backs alongside shields as they advanced with buckler and mace. Their work was the killing that was too particular for a man on horseback. No criminal save the luckiest would escape this ruin.

Battle of the Brigand Chief: [68 Strength vs 2 Strength] 200 Bandits destroyed for the loss of 6 Horselords

4. Move Landsraad military to area west of the South Iree area to take it over

"Get up. You are needed in the leader room" The guard spoke to the prisoner. His voice was calm and dispassionate. "I don't wanna! you can make me do anything!" yelled the passionate prisoner, hiding deeper into the straw. The guard walked over to him, "We both know that that is not true. Get up before i make you." He said, his facade never cracking. The prisoner got up slowly, and unwillingly he was lead to the leader room. When he reached there, his neck chains were linked with the poles in the ground meant for that purpose.

"The Leader of the Iree Folk, burkhan khann, will pass judgement on Hakra Hala. The crimes against Hakra are murder, and lying to a official." Read the person thats job was to read this.

Khan sat for a moment, still, then his eyebrows came together in concentration. He thought then spoke slowly, "The punishment is exile to Exaestuo. Since you like to murder and lie, i give you a way to come back. Steal the technology the Near folk have developed." He said. He prisoner was taken from the room and sent on his way.

Later:
"The man i sent into exile has come back? He brought the technology? good. What does the technology do that benefits us. We could make a Workshop? Then do it." Khann said, when a minor official came up to him with the news.

A traveler told of the technological poverty in the Star hegemony. The Iree Folk sent a delegate to the Star Hegemony, bearing this offer:
Workshops for Guilds
Theological Zealotry for 7/8 stone
Civil Service for borrowing Landsraadian military, and for the purchase of the swordsmen.

The Star Hegemony's military is sent to the area the Iree will add to their empire, the area that they will bring technological development.

OOC: i get 2 swordsmen.

Archsmith Homegarde was having a bad day. One of the Forgeholds, Lady Fevrier's, had been destroyed in a earthquake, which the populous had become terrified of, and then that demoralized his Forgeguards, some had deserted, and those who did were executed, as the Republic has no place for cowards. He had promptly sent men to repair her keep as soon as he heard her plight. He had the recruiter's quota double, with the outbreak of desertion, more men would be needed to replace those who were to frightened to fight, and those who deserted.

"Get me a raven, page," The young boy ran off and returned a few moments later, carrying a black bird and a small roll of paper. On the paper, the Archsmith wrote, 'To the court of the Highprince Ajaxis Ver, We understand that our two nations are very much alike, and that you are located near the zealots of Exaestuo, I offer you assistance in the coming war. We shouldn't be in denial about our future, war is coming.
Signed and Sealed,
Archsmith Grayson Homegarde'

Laudrus Burvros shifted in his chair as Kross entered the court. He held in his arms a wrapped bundle. Unfurling it, he exposed a gruesome severed head. "This is the skull of the man who killed our patrol. May he rot." Laudrus nodded and took the head. Turning to a group of retainers, he shoved the head into their hands.
"Put this up on a pike in front of the keep. Let the people know what happens to his ilk." He suspected he had an ally in Kross.

Basr Jalmarin, Estlund Province

Ropes creaked, and the men hauled, muscles glistening with sweat under the pale southern sun. Here, on the farthest reaches of the March, wooden stockades were being erected about the small scattered homesteads. Little good against encroaching armies, they would at least help with wild animals and the occasional bandits. The Horselords and those who marched under the banner of the Stars had returned from the utter east, where they had worked for a foreign lord for a time. None had been lost in the excursion, which was well, and the wealth of knowledge- reams of paper, books, learned men- that they had returned with were a sight to behold. Here on the fringe in Estlund such advances meant little, but in the capital, at the Spire, they meant more and more as the days passed. Means of resisting armored charges, methods of centralizing resource production- all these and more were valuable indeed to the Sons. The governor, one Scythus, was a man who knew how to make coin go farther and stretch every ounce of gold from the Highprince's purse. The land prospered under his care.

Western Hills of Wrath, Outskirts of Estlund

More war drums. Infected savages, crazed by some sort of wasting plague, a judgement by the Light, had come and settled and raided against the caravans traveling east. The Sons marched against them in glory, gleaming armor and black hauberks compared to the disorderly rabble. But the disease had made them perilous, and fell, desperate and uncaring of their own lives. The battle was brutal, with no quarter asked or given. Eventually the Horselords triumphed, but not without having to bury many of their brothers afterwards. The dead Infected they burned, and waited for a month away from all other men to see if the corruption had spread, each band of a hundred waiting in their own solitary camp. Spiritual corruption had its own signs, signs known well to the Stonefasts that rode with every soldiers of the Hegemony.

A raven returned to the lord of the people that served the Forge, bearing a tiny scroll with the Highprince's reply.

Greetings, Archsmith Homegarde
Your words do me fair- our people do share much in common. Your military support against the zealots to the north would be much appreciated, but we believe our situation behind the buffer state of the white-robed men shall be enough to protect us. May your warriors grow old without needing to use their swords.
Highprince Ajaxis Ver, Dark of the Stars, of the Hegemony of the Landsraad

As the troop crested the hill, they found a large group of infected. Unsure of what to do, they encircled them and began to move inwards. After they surged in towards the group, they killed several scores of them. However, it proved too little, and they had to retreat. Laudrus commanded that the alchemists in the capital begin research into metallurgy.

Death enveloped the lands of the Lakonians. Brought forth from her vast trading networks, the plague had swept through the country, first striking the heart, Lakonia itself. After that, it spread outward, by boat and horse and caravan. With it, it brought death. With it, it brought despair. The economy has ground to a halt, with everyone from miners to fisherman sick or refusing to venture outside. The High Priestess of Sveta has called for a National Week of Prayer, and has recommending isolating the infected. Several porgroms of the infected have occurred. Blame has been laid on traders from Exaestuo and their pagan ways.

The Forgeborn shield wall stood, their shields of 3/4 inch thick steel glistened in the sun on the imperial highway. In front of them was a disorganized rabble, most appeared to have the basic traits of one from Exaestuo. Some were clearly Forgeborn, with ashen hair, amber eyes, and tanned skin. The platoon leaders barked an order from the iron suits, and the Forgeguard's blades were drawn. Each sword had a blade of razor sharp iron, the best in the world. The slightly curved blades were efficient, cold, and brutal. Just like the Forgeguard who wield them, the platoon leaders shouted something else, and the morning mist broke as the Forgeguard charged silently towards the enemy, in the battles, most men would be screaming as adrenaline coursed through their veins, but the harsh discipline that the Forgelands beat into oneself taught you that every breath counts in a battle, and every soldier should only scream in death, or complete victory.

The disorganized rabble attempted to counter charge, screaming as the mass of Forgeborn took step after step, at a pace seemingly impossible in the armor they wore. The two forces clashed in the grassy plane, and Archsmith Homegarde was among those in the fray, stabbing, slashing, and bashing with the best his empire could offer. He cut another bandit down, and a gruesome mixture of pus and blood sprayed upon his armor, creating a hissing sound as the blade tore through the Exaestic man's torso, to his left, a bandit rushed a Forgeguard who was preoccupied with another, and three bolts hissed cleanly through the man's torso, and his blood soaked the ground. The Archsmith watched as the two-thousand some brigands were slain one by one, some cleanly decapitated by Forgeguard Scouts, and others ripped into ribbons of gory flesh by bolts fired by marksman crossbowmen, and others slashed dead by a Forgeguard's masterful bladework.

The mist settled, and the battle had been won. Funeral pyre smoke could be seen rising from the Forgelands across the straits to the mainland.

Basr Kaaynal, Western Slopes of Mount Nirnain, Argeleb Province

To the south and east the land stretched, and as Cerratus looked the first drifts of snowflakes were beginning to fall. Here, in the farthest reaches of the March, winter's grip never fully abandoned the land, even during the height of what the cycle of the stars insisted was summer. The long nights here were black and fell indeed, and foolish men froze to death every season. But the land was rich in veins of the silver blood of the earth, iron, and the dark evergreen forests were bounteous and without end. A man could cut down a tree a day for his entire life and not make a dent in the vast eaves of the frigid woodlands. Timber from these places could be put to good use in building homesteads and erecting fortified Basrs, though one's diet was always rich in meat due to the difficulty in raising crops upon the barren steppes. All the same, the stars still looked down on this land, and the birthright of the Sons beat in Cerratus' chest as he climbed down from the short wall to take dinner in the longhouse of the Brightlord who ruled Basr Kaaynal. Above the winter's breath froze, drifting to earth, and hearth and home were dear indeed as the night drew in.

Laudrus paced back and forth. "This plague runs out of control. We shall have to find a way to stop it." An advisor, from the guilds no less, stood up. "Maybe the Flesh Guild may assist us. They can make a cure to this malady." Laudrus nodded. He began writing a letter to the Guilds.

Elsewhere, a man suddenly stood up in a beerhall and ran out. He stumbled to a nearby manor, and began jabbering to the Ritter there. Within hours, the other Ritters in the area had come to hear of him. He was trying to get them to make something he had envisioned. A massive building, with the strength of 5 Keeps. They laughed, and then listened. Elsewhere, a soldier started asking his friends to hold their spears forward while they ran. The idea soon caught on.

Resources:
24 Income, 20 Wood, Iron, 12 Steeds, 30 Stone, accounting for turnly gains (which are none).
One hero. Metal Casting, Theological Zealotry and Civil Service available (Brilliant Scientists).

All those in Exaestuo are gathered up. They are asked to repent, to offer sacrifices and pledge allegiance to Nostra Lumen. Those who do not show proper devotion are cast out of the land for their sins.

Many leave, fleeing to unknown lands, but some stay.

"We will not submit to you theocratic rule! Nostra Lumen! Bah, let it strike us down with flame if it is real! Can't you see that these zealots have made up this sham to control us? We will have freedom!" A plague-ridden man with a sword yells, a rather large band of fellow heretics with him. They take up their swords and pitchforks as the Knights arrive.

"These heretics shall pay for their transgressions upon Nostra Lumen and the followers of Unum Verae Fidei. Purge them from us. Smite them with the sword and burn the bodies of these blasphemers. There is no mercy for those which defy the will of the Lord." Heart calls out, as the zealots charge to trample the unbelievers beneath their steeds.

The day is won soon enough. Some Knights lie dead, martyred for their faith, but many more live, and the land is cleansed.

The boy was glistening with sweat. His voice came out in ragged shrieks. "Monsters! Monsters!". The people looked at him strangely as he ran down the street. He ran up to the guards and repeated the same bit about monsters over and over again. Over the next couple days more folks came in with the same message. "Sir. We must do something. These people report the sightings of monsters. The descriptions they gave sound like plague people. I also got 1 report of a military insignia. We believe it's from.... brigade 7." the military intel man stiffened after he finished speaking. Khann looked at him. "Assemble the army. All of it. We must deal with the scourge quickly, and with lethal forces."

A day later he stood in front of his whole assembled army. "Men of this nation, we call upon you in this time of need. I believe you should know the whole situation. Out there, there is a military unit that caught the plague. It is our job to kill them. We must do this not only because it is our job, but because morally we cannot let such a scourge exist because it threatens our children and peace. It threatens science itself! Fight against the scourge of the plague, my brave soldiers!" He spoke passionately. After the finished there was a pause for a second and then there was a massive yell as the whole army yelled as loud as they could. Khann got upon his horse and lead the way to the plague unit less than a mile away. He rode at a slow trot, as he and the other knights weighted a large amount, and they had to have a lot of infantry men nearby. Khann did not often ride horses, but he was good at it anyhow, a trait many of his people had. Soon they were just a couple hundred feet from the infected. The army lined up, and then at the same time they all shouted. The knights galloped at the enemies. Khann watched from the front lines, as knights cut down 7 or 8 men before they were dragged off. "FORWARDS MEN!" He yelled, and the army and the other half of the knights charged. He was charging with his lance, and saw the first mans head cave inwards, as his lance hit the soldiers face. A fountain of blood sprung up, heading forwards and backwards from the hole. Khann could feel some blood get on his face. He killed 7 more soldiers like that. He saw a man run at him, trying to pull him him, when a broad sword cleaved through his skull, and even more blood and some slight brains got on Khann. He reached up and wiped his face,"disgusting. Thank you." He said, first to himself, then to the swordsmen. "Your welcome, good Khann. May i guard your side for right now?" The swordsmen said to him. "You may, but what is your name?" he said. He looked around, and saw that where they were was now behind the battle line. "I am Chester Rajar. I am a hero." He said.
"May i offer you service?"
"I work for a guild house in the star lands. You should send money there to pay for me."
"I will do that."
