The Eternal Grey Winter

1939, a year we all know too well, for this was the year it all changed. Hitler's armies began it's conquest, while the rest of Europe was powerless to stop it. On the other side of the world, Japan continued to expand it's already sizable empire. Fast forward 2 years, 1941, the Soviet Union is having trouble holding off the German onslaught, while Britain is still trying to recover from the blitz. Japan is preparing to attack Pearl Harbor, plunging the entire world into war. But, just days before the planned attack, the unthinkable happens: Yellowstone erupts. Thousands of tons of ash were thrown into the atmosphere. For over a week, it continued to erupt. Finally, after 8 days, it ceased. But the challenges were far from over. Over 2/3 of the continental US was buried in at least a few inches of ash. Areas within a hundred miles of the eruption were buried under more than 5 feet of ash. Millions perished. North America was plunged into a second Ice Age. Japan still attacked Pearl Harbor, but also invaded a week later. Alaska was lost soon thereafter, partially to Russia, and partially to Japan. Finally, a little over a month later, the government collapsed. Citizens rose from the ashes, creating small communities, mostly in walled in towns. The next 40-some years saw little change in their ways of life. The city-states grew, some small wars were fought, and little news reached them from the outside world. The biggest event happened in the 50s, when Hitler decided to send all surviving Jews to the wastelands once known as America. He had hoped they would all die a slow and painful death, they instead formed their own nation, in what was once Maine. They grew from 100,000, to over 250,000 by the present day, around the early 80s. You will take control of a city-state set up in the great lakes region. The Great Lakes, once a hallmark of the US, now nothing more than pits of frozen, grey sludge. The only water that can be found is by melting the snow that falls almost daily.

Chapter 1: Snow and Ashes

Image

Governor-President's Residence
Grand Rapids
Greater Republic of Grand Rapids

The Governor-President of the Greater Republic of Grand Rapids stepped out of his residence; he fondly referred to it as his "flat", although from where the term originated from he had no idea. The small apartment had been cleaned out and then fitted with various furniture and a new bed, so it was comfortable. Wearing his thick coat, he gazed at the sky; snow, a light-grayish color, was falling, creating a blanket of snow. It was nothing normal; it snowed almost every day now as a result from the Event. The Event. The word even sent chills down his spine; a cataclysmic event that devastated the entirety of the continent and even the world, killing off the majority of the population and forever altering the climate...the massive eruption had changed everything for the worse...shivering a bit, he walked down the snow-covered road- or what he assumed to be the road. He glanced up to see someone approaching him. Her surprisingly frail face startled him, but he immediately recognized her "Attlee," he stuttered. Attlee smiled a bit, "Good morning," Her voice had an accent, although it was hard to tell what country it came from- the Governor-President supposed that somewhere on earth, life was still normal, even after the Event. Countries still existed - Germany, Britain, the Soviet Union - all of them couldn't have collapsed, right? "Good morning," The Governor-President replied

"Snow again..." she replied sadly, "Are you going to meet with the Council soon?" She turned towards Hutskinson. The Governor-President nodded, "We're planning out on sending scavenging parties again. The last trip didn't go so well...but hopefully we'll get better luck this time." His mind continued to linger on the Event; while he never had actually seen it or grew up when the Event happened, he knew his parents had always said bad things about it...an eruption...disease...ash...it must've been horrible. He was snapped out of his thoughts by Attlee's response "Ah. Well, I must be going on with my business. The Speaker's asked me to leave a message, by the way; he told me to say that they've started causing trouble again. It shouldn't be hard to deal with them, but..." Her voice trailed off. The Governor-President nodded, understanding what she meant, before Attlee continued on her way. Just some casual conversation; it was perfectly normal, since being in such a small community meant that even if you were at the top, you had to socialize and be friendly towards others, or you could really never stay in power for long. At least, this was the case most of the time. Sighing he looked up at the cloudy sky again; snow was continuing to fall. It was light-gray; the result of the massive amounts of ash spewed out from the eruption nearly 40 years ago...He continued on his way; the meeting shouldn't take much more than an hour, and he wasn't expected to be there at least not for half an hour.

Chapter 1: A New Dawn
Joshua Williams was only 41, but felt much older. He had served in the Hoffenburg military for over 20 years before he was appointed President. He had fought in so many battles. Ranging from other towns to bandits. He recalled the stories his father used to tell, of America before the eruption. It was awful, but not even close to this bad. At least then they had access to food, warm clothing, and shelter. Now, each of those things were fought for. Most of the time, with great loss. That's why he had sent the convoy, made up of 2 of his 4 tanks, and 8 Deuce and a half trucks, all scavenged from one of the many factories around the area. They were using about half of their presious fuel for the trip. Their goal: Grand Rapids. Joshua had heard that there was another civilization there, one that might be willing to trade. Half of the trucks were loaded with food, the other half with troops, mostly armed with either M1903s or M1s. Both scavenged from armories. They would arrive in about two days, not long, but not fast either.

Chapter 1: Snow and Ashes

The Outskirts of Grand Rapids
Greater Republic of Grand Rapids

The scouting party of 10 looked at the wooden sign, which stated: "You are now LEAVING Grand Rapids." It was an old sign; Braggs remembered seeing it as a child. However, it was no time to be remembering his childhood - he had a job to do. Captain Lawrence Braggs was in charge of the scouting party that had been specifically been instructed by the Governor-President to explore the area around Grand Rapid, Food and other supplies were dwindling; other scouting parties had been organized but had not met much success. Now, the 10 men, 2 of which were equipped with rifles, set out with enough food to last them 2 days. The Governor-President's meeting with the Council had been adjourned for the specific reason of organizing the scouting partyf0; lead by Braggs, the men under his command knew that they would not be resting until they completed their mission. Any food or supplies they managed to salvage were to go in these carts, which would then be wheeled back to Grand Rapids. Having heard rumors of food somewhere near the Grand River, the scouting party would be venturing a little further than usual. Night would also be falling on them in a couple hours, but they had a place to stay in an abandoned farm a mile from Grand Rapids. The next morning they would keep up their scouting, before being forced go return to Grand Rapids. As the men left footsteps in the light-gray "ash snow", as Braggs called it, they were eager to finally be able to go outside, after spending weeks cooped up in Grand Rapids.
