I just wanted to drop in and get clear on a few things, since I've been pretty absent these past few days from NS as a whole. Have had to play catch up with everything.

Did we ever decided on a definite mission idea? I know I submitted mine, but the last time I looked, no real ground was broken on the specifics of it. If anyone could give me a low down on anything important that has happened since this Monday, I would apperciate it

We have a mission in the works right now. I'm still looking for soldier appearances, such as what class looks like what, and so far we've got the pic on the front page and the american assault from BF4. (I'm kinda a fan of the Chinese player models myself)

It's something much worse.

It's whenever the spec ops guys get their prequel post up. As with the first mission, you'll be given a weapon class, and you'd pick from there. For example, I'll say that you get an assault rifle, and you'll pick which one from the list.

The blues remind me of a cross between a Warhammer 40K Tau fire-warrior and a Covenant Elite from HALO. If it's only a second-tier warrior maybe Grunt or POG (Personnel Other than Grunts, pejorative military slang, also known as "pogue"). Pog or Pogue?

Edit: Probie isn't a bad one for the greys. Both for their resemblance to abductees' butt-probe stories, and probie is also short for a newb or someone on probation period. Fitting for the first tier.

I tend to jump to mythology for naming things, and I think Xiuhtecuhtli is a good fit for the blues. He's the Aztec god of fire (scorch gun) and is closely linked with war. He is also associated with young warriors and rulership (leading the greys).

There is the minor issue that Xiuhtecuhtli is not exactly a name that slips nicely off the tongue... and I doubt any of the characters are big on Aztec mythology, so this is probably more a name that command or the scientists (probably the scientists, command would likely just name it "Alien Type Two") would have given, not the soldiers. So, maybe they're officially Xiuhtecuhtlis, and the troops would shorten it to something like Xices (pronounced Zi-ck-ses).

Or maybe naming the aliens after gods is just altogether the wrong precedent to be setting...

It sounds cool at the very least. Maybe just call them the Xices, seeing as it's smaller. We can add that their name is based off of the Aztec god in their description text.

I think it's reasonable for names to be thought up in the field. Like, for example if we see this thing marching down main street, and one of the soldiers yells "Get to cover, there's some massive spidertron thing aiming at us!", then it would be reasonable for the name "spidertron" to stick. Once a mission is over, though, somebody's going to end up naming each of the aliens we met before the next mission, so we need to come up with the between-mission names (and official designations) on the OOC, and we also need to name whatever we met in Moscow here (certainly the probers, probably the Xices).

EDIT: I see Vancon has already made the distinction between informal mission names and other formal names far more concisely than me. Good job.

The second pic is perfect for the gunner. Hell, that gun he's toting is one of ours if I recall correctly.

The first one is the kind of thing that may happen later on, if we get there.
