For video games and other media, it's good.
For actual life stuff, it's terrible.

Compared to a .50 though everything is light, an M249 being a LMG makes sense, the M240 being one doesn't, even with the cartridge calibers, the M240 shouldn't be an LMG.

Also yeah, .45 ACP
Actually, all of the soldiers carbines, assault and battle rifles should be using either a 5.56 or 7.62 NATO round. The Quartermaster is going to carry as few different parts as possible. Interchangeability of as much firearm hardware as possible would be important for a group like ATHENA.
All handguns, with the exception of the Ruger SP101, are chambered for .45 caliber rounds.

7.62 isn't the mainline cartridge for 2 main reasons, it kills people too easily (more supplies spent on wounded soldiers) and it's recoil (which we'll be discussing) 5.56 and 5.45 are easy to control even if you fire a sustained burst they are also considerably lighter in bulk, making the 17 pound M249 easy to carry around and with lighter ammo (therefore 'light'), 7.62 isn't nearly as easy to control as 5.56 (granted weapon weight kind of counteracts this) and is heavier in bulk so whereas 5.56 might weigh 1 pound per 100 rounds (this isn't an accurate measurement) the 7.62 will weigh 2 pounds take the M240 which already weighs almost 30 pounds and add another 2, and the only decent place for it is on a tripod or a vehicle mount, not being lugged around the desert.
Just doesn't make sense.

The M60 was only a few pounds lighter than the 240 and it's still classified as an LMG. The Bravo is also being used in the LMG role by Marines in Afghanistan, and while 5.56 and 5.45 are easier to control and carry, they also suffer from a severe lack of range and power when compared to the 7.62. The 7.62 will go farther, hit harder, and be on target more than the 5.56, which is why it's being used as such. LMGs are for suppressing fire and cutting down large numbers of hostiles.
The bigger round means that it can chew through more cover than the 5.56 can, providing more suppression. And while suppressing fire isn't exactly intended to kill, it helps immensely because the rounds are more accurately hitting the enemy position. Not to mention if you are looking to hold off on a defensive position that your platoon literally just walked into a few seconds ago, all you have to do is set your gunner up in a good position and the bad guys drop a lot faster.
