Not really one or the other- it's with the lack of explanation within the lore. There are some salient points in your app, but it doesn't explain other things. Consider again the case of the first Feylin to manifest a dark energy field- even if it has drastically reduced energy requirements, it cannot speak, eat, touch, or communicate with its non-fielded brethren. On an inherent level it is genetically unfit, relying on others to bring it food and sustain its life. If it lives in a dwelling with a door, it cannot manipulate said door. It will dehydrate, in all likelihood, before the water to sustain its life can be integrated into its personal resonance field.
I'm just not understanding how they can be a functional species, since they'd have died out within a generation, or never emerged as a separate species/race in the first place.
