And there are still plenty of planes to choose from. Further, even if this was set in the 2020s, I still wouldn't let you start with an F-22.

And the F-5 is better than the F-4 Phantom II.

Well, even most of the high-end planes in the Ace Combats set in modern-day first flew in the mid-90's, like the F-22, the Su-37, or the Su-47, so it'd be safe to assume that the high-end planes we get in the 80's were developed in the mid-70's, and likely wouldn't be as common as say, the MiG-21, or the F-4 Phantom, which in the 80's, was still a workhorse of many air forces at the time, despite its age.
