Of all the anime I've watched, I can count the ones I actually enjoyed since seeing Madoka on 1 hand.

Perhaps I should just take more things at face value.

Honestly, a lot of anime pales in comparison to Madoka. It's probably the best magical girl anime yet, precisely because it sets out to subvert the entire genre. I also love that it deals with lots of serious, heavy issues without seeming heavy-handed (IMO).

Indeed. It reminded me a lot of Unforgiven and what it did for the Western Genre (Unfortunately not many anime fans are western fans too, though I wouldn't be surprised if there were quite a few due to the similarities in tropes and themes). I feel like Madoka was a good turning point for anime in general and it helped show you don't need rivers of gore to be dark and serious.

Oh, also on the point of Anime and Westerns, I kinda had some vague idea cooking around of some sort of Wild West meets eastern culture Steampunk Anime rp, with Gunslinger Samurai and such (With fantasy elements too).
