Well, one of the major factors in their defeats in WW2 is poor leadership. Italy being unprepared and having outdated weaponry didn't help things either...not to mention Italy has less raw resources and way less industry than the other powers...anyway, by the Ethiopian campaign do you mean the first war, or the second, or the one in WW2, or what?

Outdated? Italian Equipment was the best adapted to Desert Conditions in the war.

Hmm..interesting. I thought Italian tanks and aircraft were outclassed by the British in the war, and they had sucky equipment because of their small industry. But under German leadership the Italian troops performed way better than under most Italian generals.
