Yet their gear looks like was developed in the 50's and 60's.

TBH at first glance it looks like a rough sketch for Halo Wars.

WH40k is notorious for being cartoonishly grimdark. The Imperium of Man is in such a state of total war for so many thousands of years that it doesn't have the time to spare to relearn what science is, or learn what military strategy is beyond World War One's "THROW POORLY-EQUIPPED CONSCRIPTS AND EXPLOSIONS AT IT UNTIL IT STOPS EXISTING"

Restructuring the Imperium into competence would require the whole Imperium to stop temporarily. If it did that even for a day, that would lead to the world-draining aliens, population-torturing dark space elves, shit-destroying orks, and forces of interdimensional demons killing everyone in the galaxy due to that ONE day of idleness and weakness.

Their 'leader' and god is a 99% dead psychic that requires thousands of psychics to be sacrificed DAILY to keep the 1% of him alive so that his ultrapowerful presence can function as a lighthouse in the Hell dimension that is the only source for interstellar travel for humans and most life. If they skipped a SINGLE day of human sacrifice, that beacon would go out and FTL travel would be impossible for all of humanity, and Hell itself would laugh as it begins its slaughter of trillions and its destruction of the fabric of reality. Or the aliens would kill everyone. Or civil unrest due to isolation would kill everyone. Or the ancient zombie robot things would kill everyone.

Basically, everything is in a perpetual state of suck.

Yeah. While the Imperial Guardsmen's body armor and lasguns would be considered amazing to us today (The lasguns will blow off an unarmored person's arm with a grazing shot on the forearm, and the armor can take lasgun shots easily)...

Well... compared to absolutely everything else in the 40k universe...

Let me put it this way: There's a reason why the 40k fandom refers to lasguns and flak armor as flashlights and T-shirts.

Not even close. I play Halo and 40K and the ODSTs would be easily crushed by the Imperium of Man. The lasguns aren't really flashlights, they are more like mini Spartan Lasers that have amazing fire rate and "magazine" size, but since everything is tougher the lasguns are like flashlights. However, lasguns can, and have, killed Space Marine Terminators. To put that in perspective, a Space Marine Terminator is tougher than a Spartan with the armor better than a Scorpian tank. Yeah, ODSTs would lose.

Yeah. ODST and all of the other Halo fighters would probably do a ton of damage to the the no-training Imperial Guard. Like, hundred-to-one death ratio. That's even with the fact that lasguns are like spartan lasers, because ODST are actually INTELLIGENT. They could drop their outdated weapons and start using the spartan laser machineguns themselves with no problem and STILL be better shots and better trained than the Imperial Guard. Tactics would kill a TON of guardsmen.

But you see, here's the thing: The Imperium of Man is BIG. As in, they lose millions of soldiers in a battle and consider it a landslide victory. Halo's elite forces would lose through sheer numbers alone.

Although, the Space Marines are pretty damn tough. That's why they're there for when you need quality over quantity. I mean, they still charge a machinegun nest head-on with a chainsword and a handgun of the "fuck up tanks" size, but they make up for their lack of modern strategy with superhuman abilities, power armor, and massive power armored balls. ODST would be wrecked, but with spartans it would be a brain vs. brawn sort of fight.

Hey, as an IG player, I take offense to your quote "no-training". I'll have you know, our training is better than the ODSTs, that's how so many IG can survive the 'Nids. Also, the Space Marine vs Spartan has been done to death, just about everyone says Space Marine would win.

In the end, sure, the ODSTs could do something, but they'd be gunned down before even reaching the IG line because of how he IG works. Fusillades of death (sometimes).

Hey, the Imperium has its share of tactical geniuses. CREEEEEEEEEED!
Also, yeah, the IG's training is pretty tough in and of itself, and their equipment - dismal as it is by 40K standards - is probably at least slightly better than the ODST's. They're only perceived as incompetent and underequiped because 40K has ludicrously high standards in the field.
Also, psykers.
Also, Assassins.
Also, Space Marines are actually very smart (theoretically).

Which is why I don't like WH40K. Cause it makes the Soviet Union look like a bunch of braniacs who had a possibility of conquering the world.

If they were better trained than an ODST(which really is almost Spartan trained, just not started at 6 and given a shit load of genetic enhancements that usually kill or disable half of the candidates) then they would be smart enough to know that just charging at things until they die isn't an effective mode of combat.

But, I know nothing of WH40K. Although the Death Korps of Krieg I am a bit of a fan of. Just for the uniforms though.

Plus charging is an effective tactic. And they dont make the choices, they're given orders and they are forced to carry them out or be executed.

Well then ...

Whether the IG are better trained than the Halo guys doesn't really matter. We know that their training is tough, and many of them come from Death or Hive Worlds (where you have to be insanely tough to survive past age ten) and/or receive military training from birth - for instance, Cadians learn to field-strip lasguns before they can read. Equipment-wise, the IG's is probably more or less equivalent in terms of raw effectiveness, but less versatile. However, that's all rather irrelevant.
This is because the IG is HUGE. They have trillions of soldiers and billions of vehicles. They could litterally throw soldiers at the Halo guys - any Halo guys - until they die from suffocation under the bodies. Even if the IG lined up naked and let the Halo guys kill them without resistance, the Halo guys would die of old age before they went through a significant portion of the IG. That's how ludicrously enormous an army the IG is.

Now if we add to that:
- the Space Marines, who have bulletproof bones, two hearts, three lungs and can live for centuries constantly accumulating combat experience and training, and that's not even taking into account their absurdly abundant and advanced equipment;
- the Sisters of Battle, who can ignore lethal wounds and warp reality through raw faith;
- the Officio Assassinorum, where some Assassins can go through a platoon of Space Marines on their own like a hot knife through butter, and those aren't the most impressive ones;
- psykers, who have basically magical powers and can scour entire battlefields in one go;
- and all the Imperium's insane machinery, from spaceships capable of litterally destroying planets (and I mean actually wreck them at a geological level) to mechs as large as a city to more tanks in the IG than there are humans on Earth IRL;
I think we can safely say that one single squad of the ODST couldn't really do much.

- the Space Marines, who have bulletproof bones, two hearts, three lungs and can live for centuries constantly accumulating combat experience and training, and that's not even taking into account their absurdly abundant and advanced equipment;
- the Sisters of Battle, who can ignore lethal wounds and warp reality through raw faith;
- the Officio Assassinorum, where some Assassins can go through a platoon of Space Marines on their own like a hot knife through butter, and those aren't the most impressive ones;
- psykers, who have basically magical powers and can scour entire battlefields in one go;
- and all the Imperium's insane machinery, from spaceships capable of litterally destroying planets (and I mean actually wreck them at a geological level) to mechs as large as a city to more tanks in the IG than there are humans on Earth IRL;
I think we can safely say that one single squad of the ODST couldn't really do much.

That all sounds really, really lame. And a good reason why I've never been a real fan of it.
