The best I could make it was to set it in an academic setting in my nation. :p The other option would have been MLP, and I'm sure nobody wants that.

Bran
Late college-goer working on getting into the local air force, but trying to weigh the benefits of focusing on this versus planning on settling down with his girlfriend, Rylli. Moved a long way from his family in order to attend the school, and often suffers from feelings of isolation as a result. Has a tendency to be on the end of innocent pranks by the other students (such as dressing him up as a mermaid while he is asleep).

Brit
A friend of Bran's, who is also looking into a military career. She struggles somewhat with classes, but always manages to pull through in the end. Frequently visits with the school therapist Arthur, and is extremely suspicious of the nearby Luxan shop in town which she often advises her friends to steer away from.

Torii
A student at the college's attached high school, nearing graduation. Smart but misbehaved, often skips out on detentions to wander out onto the college campus and try to blend in and learn from the diverse subcultures, whom she admires. Suspicious of some of the teachers and townies. Is friends with Marcus, Brit, and Bran.

Marcus
Also attends the attached high school, prodigy child who mainly works in math and metal shop, friends with Torii. Often mislabeled as "emo" by the other students, he has a somewhat difficult home life, and few people realize he is related to a few of the high staff at the university. Before settling at his current school he moved around a lot with his family and met many people, but hasn't managed to forget an odd, white-haired, home schooled girl living on the other side of the city he once ran into.

Thriller
The Chancellor of the university, a friendly but proud figure who manages to both value the academic success of his school and give significant leeway to the odd, fantastical things some of the students and teachers get into. He is an old veteran on the outside but still young at heart, who hopes to maintain a fair family legacy at the school.

Swith/Charumati
Thriller's wife, and technically the owner of the building and land the schools are built on. More rumor among the student and staff body than reality, she is normally elusive and stays out of the spotlight despite her influence being well-felt in the facility. The few times she does make an appearance it causes quite a splash, as it is always an unannounced surprise and people are dazzled by her kind but highly sophisticated nature. Bran in particular looks up to her.

The Doctors Von Eldritch and company
Neil and Gretta are two of the highest achieved, most prestigious, and most valuable professors the university has, and they damn well know it. Having multiple degrees in various areas (including extensive experience in paleontology), they are known to flow in and out of teaching and personal projects, and although their children technically attend the attached high school, the three are so advanced themselves that they often get away with fooling around in their parents' work spaces. They are frequently attended by their junior assist Fortu, and their family friend Arthur works as the school's human resources and psychologist. Scarface is a janitor who is not afraid to twist off the ears of idiot frat boys who have no consideration for the integrity of the building.

Naomi
Swith's younger sister, and another teacher at the university. Her calm nature sometimes allows her to be tricked or manipulated by the students, but always manages to put her foot down fiercely before things get out of control. She is married to the high school science teacher Thaddeus, but has been having troubles with him lately, with affects their son, Marcus. Few people know she is related to Swith, and she often finds herself feeling in the Chancellor's wife's shadow during the later's visits, but other than that, enjoys the nature of academic life.

Dora
Part of the human resources department, mainly in ensuring the students know about practicing safe sex. She also has a degree in studying ancient Greece and in time-space physics, but the school rarely ever utilizes these, unfortunately. She is known among students for being one of the most chill, and generally less-fucks-given staff members at the school, and is thus very popular as a result. However, that doesn't mean she lets them do stupid or dangerous things either.

The Luxans
Own a small independent shop in town where they sell herbs, scents, charms, jewelry, and other New Age, esoteric, fringe products. Often considered shady by the surrounding community, they none the less generate a respectable customer base from the local students who often shop there out of intense curiosity and a need for superficial danger. It's not uncommon for students to claim they have been cursed somehow by the products, or been given higher knowledge from beings beyond other dimensions, but so far the law has no evidence or reason to investigate the shop and likely never will.

Willow
An exchange student from Canterlot University, a sister school in the United States. Is studying in liberal arts, but has really moved to the Empire of Giovenith in order to secretly investigate mysterious letters he has been receiving from someone going by the name of Megan Zarchele, which he believes could be connected to the weird going-on's at his school's younger equivalent, Canterlot High. The Luxan shop is one of his prime investigation spots.

Pippa-Michelle
A model who lives in the nearby town. Doesn't attend the school, but does wander on campus a lot and is popular among men for her beauty, though she avoids going or hanging out with others. Not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, she is often manipulated by her managers and photo shooters, but isn't sure how to put an end to it. To cope, she turns to religion (Triitclo-Cloerith).

Mine are boring.

I rather enjoyed it, actually.

I'm curious to see how you would translate it to MLP. *nods*

Everyone is thrown into a generic school setting and thinks they're students/faculty, like in the parallel universe thing? That'd be fun.

They'd realize what was happening and who they really were after NVE drives an inter-dimensional Cadillac through the second story classroom where the teens and a teacher are learning, and starts asking why the hell everyone just up and went to another universe without letting him know.

Or regular characters meeting parallel universe characters from a reality just like theirs, and they have to work together to escape a mysterious island they all woke up on, like crucible! Except with double trouble!

Or, another one: The same concept, but the parallel character is controlled by someone else, like, for example: Alt!Torii is run by, say, Bran, and Alt!Dora by NVE or something...nah, that'd be a little too crazy.

I really like this idea.

Nick reactivated, sort of. In communal kitchen and open for interaction, but no one need interact although I would find it fun.

I'm working on the meme - I selected 5 chars at random. I'll post one at a time, because otherwise you wouldn't see them anytime soon.

BTW, Prim, I liked what you did with Nick!

Swith
Takes the form of a unicorn, but is truly something darker than a pony. Having come into being during the pre-Equestrian era, her original job was to feed off and drive the animosity of the original unicorn tribe, the pony tribe once known for luxury, arrogance, and belief in their own nobility before the unification. Unfortunately for her, she arrived too late before the windigos moved in and began to suck up all the negativity themselves, leaving very little emotion and power for her. By the time that the windigos were destroyed, it had already come as a result of the three tribes uniting and shifting their energy toward the positive, again leaving her without much room to gain power. Her situation obviously has not gotten any better, with Equestria now being the most positive and good place on the planet under the iron-grip rule and worship of the alicorns, but has since let go of that mission and made a home in Canterlot. There, she married a high-ranking member of the EUP guard (Thriller), and keeps in good touch with Discord.

Klaus
Was in the same boat as Swith, except for the pegasus tribe, the pony tribe once known for warriors, brutishness, laconism, and militarism before the unification. Stuck in his pegasus form, he used to rarely leave the Everfree Forest, but made an exception for the two times Discord took control of the country (cotton candy clouds that rain chocolate milk, roads made of soap, ballerina bison--like he'd miss any of that!). Lately though he has been wandering among ponies again, attracted by the flood of great changes in Equestria (the return of the Crystal Empire, crowning of Princess Twilight, Discord becoming allies with Celestia). He's taken a liking to Ponyville in particular, mainly due to it's tendency to attract weird mayhem and being the home of the very fun Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash. Occasionally he checks up on the Wonderbolts, given they're the closest thing left of the original warrior culture.

Ogoti
Like Swith and Klaus, for the Earth ponies, once known for mandatory simplicity, rural-ness, and connection with the natural world before the unification. Early on he was content to mix with the everyday culture of the ponies around him, and has adapted well to the shifting eras. He currently lives in a quiet cottage near the Everfree, and isn't shy about having tea with Fluttershy. Like his siblings, he is familiar with Discord.

Conservators
Crystal ponies recently restored with the rest of the Empire. They were the few citizens who were able to evade Sombra's tyranny long enough to make attempts at rebellion and to avenge the murder of Princess Amore, actively supporting and doing their best to assist in Celestia and Luna's defeat of the false king. Unfortunately despite their valiant efforts, they disappeared along with the rest of the Empire and the rest of it's ponies for 1000 years due to Sombra's curse. With the curse broken through the efforts of the Mane 6 and the rightful descendant of Amore (Princess Cadance) on the throne, they have at long last set aside their fight and are now focusing on rebuilding a life in the new and strange future they have found themselves in. A few even competed in the Equestria Games.

Thriller
A high-ranking member of the EUP guard, though obviously still under the command of Captain Shining Armor. Ambitious but dedicated, few know that when nopony else is looking, he enjoys sitting upon Celestia's throne and pretending to be an emperor--few besides his wife Swith, and Celestia herself who waves it off as harmless and turns a blind eye.

Bran
A pegasus who, while on his way to enlist in the Wonderbolts Academy like he always dreamed, took a wrong turn and wound up in the grasp of Starlight Glimmer. Forced to live in "Our Town" with his cutie mark stolen like everypony else, he found some happiness in meeting Rylli and they helped each other maintain sanity until they were rescued by Princess Twilight and her friends. Even though many decided to stay in the village and create a new life, the couple decided to leave and start a new life elsewhere, debating whether or not to settle down or complete Wonderbolts training.

Dimitrov sisters
Mrs. Dimitrov a unicorn and Mr. Dimitrov a pegasus, Katya turned out a unicorn and Torii an Earth pony. A family break-up similar to their human counterparts, Mrs. and Katya lived in Canterlot while Mr. and Torii moved to a more rural area. The two reunited by complete happy coincidence when both moved to Ponyville--Katya and Torii often hanging out with the likes of Octavia Melody and DJ_PON3 respectively. Both have hopes of eventually going back to Canterlot, Katya to rejoin high society and Torii to see if she can do some good in the royal guard.

Brit
An Earth pony mare who has hit hard times after being denied a place in the EUP training program, and has decided to move to Ponyville in order to slow down and discover herself among the small town folk. Although she has her cutie mark she feels lost, but knows she has come to the right place to make friends and find a purpose.

Kale
An Earth pony in Ponyville with one of the most famous gardens in the country. She is super social and friendly, and works hard in various support groups in order to protect the environment.

Monfrox
A griffon who has moved to Ponyville in order to give her daughter a better future than was available in the rundown Griffonstone.

The Luxans
A strange group of ponies who can hardly be called "Equestrians." They have traveled all over the world and in all sorts of forbidden areas; among the zebras, among the griffons, the yaks, the dragons, the land that Tirek and Scorpan came from. Some say that have even dabbled in the magic of Sombra, the nature of the Everfree, and possibly even Discord himself. They rarely return among regular ponykind, and when they do, they are usually feared and avoided.

They rarely return among regular ponykind, and when they do, they are usually feared and avoided.

MEME TIME! I'll reinterpret 5 randomly-selected chars as Fvaarnimarns.  As dimensional/temporal travel is...problematic, only FT, extreme PT, powerful EB, or really historically significant chars stand a reasonable chance of ending up in Bielefeld.  (If your char's counterparts (Yes, we're dealing with 2 realities, extremely similar and linked) stay in their realities/are FT, are NOT eb's, and you like the counterpart enough, let me know and they'll be canon.)

Min, this didn't run away from me.  It called Scotty and asked to be beamed out of Earth's orbit.  (I think it went to Warp Nine after that.)  I sincerely apologize if this is OOC, but I hope you enjoy it!  Thank you for unwittingly having helped to shape my canon.  That much-maligned little office/project had only the most nebulous of existences prior to my typing this; I am uncertain another char would have led to my fleshing it out to even this small extent.

Without further ado, 1 of 5!
A woman from a distant country, where honor is upheld with violence and a slight offense can spark a war between clans, she was the sole heir of her father, much to his frustration.  After years of trying to defend his legacy and her right to carry it on, she decided that she needed a vacation.  Fvaarniimar seemed like a nice place, and turned out, by and large, to be even nicer in person, at least as far as the weather went.  There wasn't much crime, either.

One night, a daring thought occurred to her.  What if she were to just... Stay?  She had responsibilities, yes, but someone else would take over.  They would have regardless, soon enough; she was getting to be old, and frail.  Someone would try to promote themself to her spot - and that would mean killing her.  There had, in fact, been attempts already - for that reason she had told few people where she was headed.  Meriz, a protège of sorts and - though rather young - one of her closest friends, had been left in charge, as a deputy.  If she did not return - better Meriz than another, and Meriz would not have killed her for the position.  Some would call it weakness.  Tavana called it loyalty.

A retirement away from all of that fighting and her feelings of inferiority, away from reminders of her father's scorn... It sounded perfect.

It wasn't, not quite.  Fvaarniimarns were quite civil to tourists largely because tourists sustained their economy, tolerating even the wearing of red within their borders.  The day she went to apply for a visa to remain, that stopped.  Before she would even be considered for a visa, she had to remove her jacket (red).  Whispers followed her out, and suddenly the smiling faces weren't so smiley.  No one outright said,  "We don't want you here;" she still got the idea.  As a tourist, she had been welcome.  As a new resident - for although it cost a princely sum, she received her visa within the week - she was not.

Others could have given it up as a bad job, gone home.  If she did so she would not, as she had hoped, quietly disappear with some speculation about who had removed her from the picture.  It would come out that she had tried to obtain a visa.  Tried to leave.  Her death would not be in a few years, it would be in a few days.  Worse, the House would not necessarily end up headed by a person worthy of the duty - as it would if she simply left Meriz in charge.  Meriz would be challenged immediately, but Tavana expected that her deputy would be able to handle attacks easily.

In theory she could have gone to another country... But was it worth the trouble?  Fvaarnimar was an isolated little place that few had heard of, and - given the discrepancies in politics and values - one of the last places anyone would think to look for her.  Besides, she would probably find herself in the same situation elsewhere.  If she wasn't at home, she would be a foreigner.

Tavana threw herself into becoming a little less of an outsider with determination and zeal; this was, after all, her chance at a new life. She bought a little home - a hut really, but it turned out to be quite cozy and it was in a mixed neighborhood.  She worked up the courage to ask why red was so taboo, and what started out as a few questions ended up as
the longest conversation she had since leaving home, culminating in a greatly broadened understanding of Fvaarnimarn culture and her first Fvaarniimarn friend.  She paid the exorbitant sales taxes with few complaints, even though as a noncitizen little of the money benefited her.  Slowly, she went from 'that bloody violent immigrant' to 'Tlvavsaannga.'  The pronunciation was odd, but she took it in stride.  Those back home would never recognize that name if used, and she knew how badly she was mangling the Fvaarnimarn words she attempted.  She soon came to learn that the laughter at these attempts held no malice, and her new friends - fellow old ladies mainly, some quite formidable - were just as apt to laugh at each other as at her.

It was crucial that she not be found, now, and not only for her own sake.  Meriz had known her destination, known how stressful things had been.  No one had followed: either Meriz had taken those secrets to the grave or - far more likely - concealed them still.  If the latter, exposure of that fact would at best compromise her successor's position.  Tavana did not wish to consider worse possibilities.

Things in her new home, however, were looking up.  She found out that few would poke fun at foreigners for fear that they would take offense.  It seemed that she was no longer considered a foreigner.  She joined a traditional dancing/self-defense class, and turned out to be incredible at it once she managed to slow her motions down to the appropriate pace; it also helped to keep her limber. At the three-year anniversary of her arrival, she found herself with a small stipend of vouchers for about a week's worth of basic necessities per month.  A note in the first envelope informed her that as she had spent some time in Fvaarniimar, paid taxes, and not caused trouble, she was entitled to some privileges.  It was helpful, as the job she had found as a rather low-level manager in an eraser factory after realizing that her money was running out did not pay terribly well.

The note also informed Tavana that due to her advanced age she would be eligible for citizenship in two years instead of fourteen, and hinted that filing the papers promptly would speed up the process.  After some enquiries, Tavana headed to the proper department of Iifveerfvaardaakuu.  She filed the papers.  A few days later, a letter arrived.  Her request for citizenship would of course be fully processed in a few years - but in the meantime, her qualifications and qualities, especially her interest in discovering new things her sheer determination, and the fact that she was from a different culture had caught the attention of Hodvud, a bureaucrat overseeing a terribly understaffed project to make plans for scenarios which were near-universally considered downright silly and... To search for evidence, in sources from the past and in patterns in reported news, showing that these things had happened.

This duty actually considered largely of combing through fiction, including amateur fiction.  Science fiction or fantasy authors, after all, might come up with a good plan for handling first contact, a zombie apocalypse, or people suddenly developing supernatural powers.  Meanwhile, if any events of such an improbable nature had in fact occurred in reality, it was very likely that an account of them would be passed off as fiction, or would become legend or folklore, or perhaps even myth.  Myths were a little too risky (tied to religion) and little too old.  The office was tasked with sorting through the mess of literature.  Looking for solutions... And for patterns.  Separating these from what couldn't work, what was meaningless.  Thinking of every possible OTHER reason why a pattern could be showing up in accounts. (Amusingly, Tavana ended up assigned several seasons of a close counterpart to Star Trek.)

Working for what amounted to a Fvaarnimarn X-Files office was better than it sounded. The job paid less than overseeing eraser manufacture and was the object of a great deal of ridicule among the few people aware of its existence, but it served free, good-quality meals at the 2, 3, and 4 fifths of a day marks.  Furthermore, it was an excellent crash course in Fvaarnimarn and more.  Within three months Tavana went from a halting speaker and poor reader of Fvaarniimarn to one fluent in everything save some very obscure terms and proper pronunciation, and she began to pick up other tongues.  Conversing properly with her neighbors proved quite a rewarding experience - as did conversing with her colleagues over meals.  They saw her as a peer, a valuable member of their team; they appreciated not only the different perspective a nonnative could bring to the table but also her will to succeed.  On several occasions she found decent solutions for problems which had been given up on.

Her increased command of the language opened up more opportunities.  She could be certain that she would not be denied citizenship on the basis of her Fvaarnimarn.  She could easily keep up with the news; reading it was no challenge.  People took her more seriously.  And she was able to read the information for upcoming exhibitions of 'traditional Fvaa dance.'  She attended one - and realized that it had been open to public entry.  She had been told she was good.  She could do what those other dancers had done.

Tavana's colleagues were a somewhat quirky lot.  They didn't mind her practicing dance while at work, provided that she did not bring her lelob.  (They doubted she could hold it and her assignments simultaneously, and feared that it would crash into shelves, desks, etc.)

She was, in fact, as good as the other dancers.  One provided her with information on a competition.  She attended.  It was a rather strange sort of affair.  Niceness and good sportsmanship were enforced, so people were either genuinely nice, being quite obviously fake about it, or trying to pass off sarcastic comments which would have been nice if genuine.  Tavana kept her cool until quite rudely insulted - and then she let the guy have it.  She placed that year.  She won the next - and got to meet the Fvaavimkune in person, if only for a few minutes.  She was nice, but Tavana read the news.  This was not a woman whom you wanted to be on the wrong side of.  Fortunately, it seemed that Tavana was on the right side of her ruler.

34 days shy of the two-year anniversary of her acceptance of the job, she was informed that  was extremely busy.  Despite her position, she was a member of Iifveerfvaardaakuu.  Could she sign a letter as such?

It was a letter informing someone of their granted citizenship, and her signature would render it official.  The name had been covered.  She assumed that that was standard procedure, silly as it seemed; she felt a little bad for whoever received a letter signed by no one of importance.

On the fifth anniversary of Tavana's visa application, a letter bearing a very familiar signature arrived.  She gasped, and cried, and laughed, but soon her thoughts turned to more serious matters.  As a citizen in a highly socialist nation, her basic needs would be taken care of by the government.  Should she keep her job?  She was getting old, but she was after all being paid to read.  And maybe some of her work could be important someday... After some thought Tavana decided to reduce her hours.  That would give her more time for friends and recreational activities.

For a few years, that worked well.  Unfortunately, this Tavana's aging was not reversed.  It started out slow, subtle.  It was more difficult to dance.  She stopped winning competitions, even at the regional level.  And then she stopped placing... And then finally she stopped entering.  Her creaky old joints and bones weren't up to it.

She was told in no uncertain terms to stop straining her eyes - or risk damage beyond what glasses could correct. Thirty minutes, perhaps, of reading per day.  Either she would need to quit her job, or do it via audio; either she could tell her boss, or the doctor would.  She did it via audio - after having received a hearing aid.  Someone had to go through shows and movies, after all.

The crone was beginning to understand her people's tendency to cull those growing frail and elderly.  She considered returning and letting them.   Being in this state was humiliating.   Her people aimed for death in battle.  She was probably too old to fight, but... She could try.  Doing it herself held little appeal to Tavana; she wanted for her death to have some meaning.

In most countries a person would join the army for that purpose.  Tavana gave notice to Hodvud, who had expected her to retire years earlier.  A farewell party was thrown, and Tavana asked Hodvud for a letter of recommendation.

He was absolutely shocked when the CORPS OF FVAARNIMAR, of all the insane places his former employee could have tried for a job, called to follow up on the letter.  The Corps was an elite unit, tasked with espionage and guarding diplomatic personnel.  They were far from keen to admit someone who really ought to be enjoying a peaceful existence at home, and a little unnerved by her foreign origins.  Tavana was asked why she wanted to join; she told the truth.  The case was referred upwards, to Fvaavimkune.

Tavana had made enough of an impression to be remembered; it had been a favorable impression.  She was admitted to Corps training.  Had she not had substantial training in the use of the weapons in which she was being trained and experience in combat, she would not have been able to make it past the first few days.  As it was, the training really did hurt her joints and bones, but Tavana was deteriorating.  She wanted to go out fighting.  She took enough pain relievers to compensate, and was very careful to avoid putting too much stress on her bones - a broken bone would quite likely have disqualified her.  Those she trained with - years younger - quickly grew to respect the elderly woman in their midst.

Thirteen years after her arrival, at the age of 79, Tavana set a record as the oldest person ever admitted to the Corps of Fvaarnimar.  She received a cane, with a wood end which unscrewed to expose a steel blade and a rubber ball just above the cap for the blade.

No one expected her to hold the position for long - not even herself.  She often received the less taxing assignments; even considering that, people were quite surprised that she could keep up.  With enough medication, she could.

Three years later, someone tried to shoot a foreign official, and Tavana stepped in front of him.  He received a minor wound to the arm.  Tavana began to hemorrhage internally.  The doctors in that country tried to treat her.  She was too weak to refuse; they could do nothing anyway.  A surgery might have helped someone younger, but she wasn't expected to survive it.

The foreign government was willing to charter a plane to Esine, where Tavana returned to a heroine's welcome.  Many of those she had known once had come, and there were a few minutes for Tavana to say her goodbyes before she lost consciousness.  Soon afterwards, her heart stopped. She was buried in a gown of hunter green.

No, I'm not sure that the other four will be equally detailed. :p

Ditto on what Torsi said. :D

I think that Tavana is a character who would have a notable story, no matter what reality it was set in.

That said, I'm beyond thrilled by your reactions to this version's story! Yours have been very interesting to read as well. (Stay tuned!)
