Read some things on the dragon age wiki and a lot of people agree that survivors of the blights, if they live in or close enough to tainted lands, they contract the taint themselves and get very sick. But that apparently happens if you stay near it for a few weeks. You can walk on it and stuff, but it would probably be all dead and barren. And nothing can grow on tainted lands either.
