To be fair, does anyone really give a fuck about field hockey? After all, it was basically invented when some posers were like, "Yo dude Canada's so cool" and decided to emulate us, eh, but then they realised that they didn't have enough ice to play true hockey, eh, so they figured out some lame-ass way to play it on grass.

No, no. Lesbians play roller derby.

I mean, one of my lesbian friends (out of several, mind you, because the universe just loves to troll me by bringing all sorts of queer people into my life except the kind I'd be most interested in dating) does roller derby, so that might be a thing.

So I was wondering, do you people think would it be too silly to try to have a roleplay somewhat based on Christian lore while having it set in a world different from Earth (clarification: an Earthlike world, but different from Earth; I'm not talking about other dimensions here)? I've had an idea kicking around in my head for a while, though I probably won't act on it soon, and I feel that conforming to Earth geography would act in detriment of my plans. I figure a compromise could be made by having the setting be a fictional area inserted into RL Earth, but that feels a tad awkward to me, though I suppose I could always try anyway.

I think setting such an RP in a not!Earth would work fine.

My main concern with not!Earth is the discrepancy (Christianism likely wouldn't have developed as such in a world geographically distinct from ours) though that is not too difficult to ignore, I suppose. Some decent lampshading might just do the trick.

Now, I still want a fictional setting because I have a very specific idea of a few of the local landmarks (and associated folklore) and things like that, plus it would give me an additional excuse to get away with 'supernatural weather' like the one displayed in A Hundred Years Of Solitude or Silent Hill :P. I didn't really intend to delve too deeply into the world outside of where the characters would start, anyway.

Well, I would say that the main things that influenced Christianity's development were:
  • It originated in a desert
  • The region in which Judaism was practised was conquered by the Romans, which greatly affected Jesus's life and the lives of the early Christians
  • As it spread to Europe, it adopted many European practices and folkloric elements
What kind of setting are you thinking about for the RP?

Eh, Earth/not!Earth-wise, it would take place mostly in a small, somewhat isolated town with lots of superstition and folklore surrounding it and the nearby landscape (mostly forests and hills). As I said, the rest of the world wouldn't really need to be defined all that much, though I suppose it would be logical to at least define in a general sense what the nation where the town is located is like.

Mmm, I'd go much deeper. Christianity was a direct consequence of the Axial Age's thought, and so inherited many Axial Age religion's new ideas, which had proved their staying power; monotheism, ecumenism and generally much more structured practises. Geography, of course, influenced it (as in its metaphors, for example) but also in terms of human geography; many of its ideas were important in such a region as Judea, discontent with Roman rule and far from the Roman centre, but well-developed, somewhat wealthy and with some of the strongest religious ideas in the world, though the lack of ecumenism prevented it from spreading. That interesting structure, with the Roman tax system being imposed over a society that had developed much more than other societies with the exact same bureaucracy, along with its economy, made for Christianity to go as it did. Jesus himself, too, influenced things, as did, you might argue, natural events and other non-Abrahamic lore from the area. In its immediate aftermath, as well, the fashion in which it spread and the nature of the area in which it spread also influenced it; martyrdom, its ecclesiastical organisation and so on coming mostly from that time.

I think I may have babbled a bit, and not in a particularly clear way, but you get the idea.

I suppose it should also be noted that Greek philosophers had a profound impact on Europeans' beliefs about the world, which in turn profoundly impacted most sects of Christianity.

Yes, they were indeed part of the early Axial Age thought. Christianity was the culmination, if you like, of the Axial Age (though you could also call it the beginning of the Second Axial Age, lasting until the founding and rise of Islam).

So, climate would be temperate?

Well, officially. I did bring up supernatural weather earlier didn't I? :P

Rome also influenced Christianity a lot; you could argue it wouldn't have appeared without the Roman Empire. Will some sort of analogue for that be present?
