My advice (taking into account I've used a letter opener less than a dozen times in my life):

1. Stick the blade into the side just underneath the flap of the envelope where there should be a tiny little gap or something. You know what I'm talking about.
2. Pull the handle of the letter opener so that you're cutting the top of the envelope (i.e. cutting where the flap is folded).
3. When you're done, pull out the letter. (This last part should be obvious, but three steps are always better than two.)

I had always imagined that it would be done in a way that would leave the envelope intact except for the glue but apparently not so.

I don't get why people are busy shitting themselves and each other over how awesome Dragon Age: Inquisition is for its portrayal of LGBT people. It's like,

"Bioware, how's your new RPG stand out from the rest of them?"
