Firstly, the CSA garnered influence overseas through their strong economy which prevented the economic shutdown of trade for the CSA and allowed them to gain resources for the war while still in combat with northern forces. Next, the CSA's army was composed of more elite and well trained troops, the majority of US veterans at the time lived in the South and this contributed to a major reason for their combat success. Then, on top of that, the intelligence of Robert E. Lee instantly pushing north prevented the Union from damaging or destroying major CSA strongholds, the idea was to force the Union into attacking an entrenched southern army in northern land, essentially to try to tire out the north until the level of war exhaustion forced the north to concede, however the north was more than willing to break the footholds the CSA gained in the north which led to the very bloody and massive battles often described in books.

But, seeing as the CSA in this game didn't perform an invasion of the north immediately, it puts him in a compromised position compared to the real life version of the CSA who was in a far better position early in the war. Basically, you're going to either have to garner allies for a push north or play a defensive war until you get a break against the Union which will be significant enough to push north.

Canada I suppose, or I gave California near autonomy due to Mexican threats, so you might play as them

As the Union army began nearing the town from the north side planning to begin circling the town, the previously stated ambush sprung into action. Cannons fired grapeshot into the cannoneers, riflemen opened fire, and smoke signals were made from the center of the town to alert others of the attack. There were definetly more troops than the union anticipated, as the Confederacy had very much anticipated the attack. The union men could not circle around the town because of this ambush, or even build their trenches. The Confederate troops from the northeast and northwest took the sides of the union army while the ones from the midnorth attacked the front. The smoke signals soon caught the attention of troops in Mechanicsville, just north of Richmond. They moved in swiftly to attack the behind of the union army. Meanwhile, the political officials in Richmond left the town from the south and headed to Raleigh, North Carolina.

In response to the attack in New Orleans, the Louisiana state guard moved in with cannons as the port was being shot up. There was an ammunition storage in the town, which the north would surely seize if they win. The ammunition and weapons are carted away shortly after the ships are spotted. The cannons fire upon the ship as a militia force is riled to support them. The Docked Confederate ships are quickly boarded to use the onboard cannons against the navy.

Firstly,you never said you moved those troops behind me, so yeah, and secondly, the ships for Louisiana haven't even left yet
