1938: All was normal in Italy up to this point. Mussolini was in charge and the nation warred against nature and life. The army was mobilized. The navy was on maneuvers in the Mediterranean. Things were normal up until the Germans invaded Austria. This was a shocking development in the nation of Italy. Mussolini deployed three divisions of Alpini to defend Austria, this was met with a united army of German and Austrian service men, confused the Italians held. Hitler reached Mussolini and explained to him that the Austrians wanted German rule. The Italian forces withdrew after Mussolini held a referendum-like poll to see the wills of the Austrians in his occupied territory.

1939: The Spanish civil war's conclusion lead to the return of the "volunteer" force. A shot term of reorganization lead to a reform in the military, Mussolini decided to repeal his previous reforms and changed the organisation system into what was essentially the norm for European nations. A small revolt in Somalia was put down within weeks. Musssolini signed the Pact of Steel, forming an alliance with the Germans. The invasion of Poland strained German-Italo relations, for the Pact of Steel promised no war for seven years. Mussolini was asked to deploy "volunteers" but refused. Mussolini invaded Albania and took it, forcing Zog into exile.

1940: The war in Europe continued to grow as the Germans pushed towards France. Mussolini redeployed his men to the French and British borders. Mussolini deployed an invasion force to Albania in preparation for his planned invasion of Greece. Mussolini sent an ultimatum to Greece, the Greeks replied with; "No". The Italo-Greko war began. With initial success the Italians pushed in several miles only to be pushed back to Albania. A tug of war ensued on the border.

1941: Mussolini requested support form the Germans but received nothing, at this time he decided he'd had enough with the Germans. He redeployed men to hi Border with German and reached out to Britain and France for peace. In the peace talks Mussolini offered the end to all Italian-German relations, the end of the Italo-Greko war, and volunteers for the allied side. The Allies demanded the forfeit of all Italian colonies, but Mussolini refused. After a month of secret negotiations both parties accepted the deal. Before informing his former ally Mussolini deployed eight hundred thousand men to his northern border. A messenger Pigeon was sent over the border to German, informing Hitler of the peace deal and the end of the A\alliance.

1942: The Germans and Italians both had large numbers of men on the borders ready to fight. A hundred thousand men left Italy to fight along side the Brits. The Italian air force and navy patrolled Germany's borders a few skirmished tested the stalemate, but war was prevented. The Germans approached the Greek border and at this point an unlikely alliance formed, the Italians and the Greeks formed a temporary alliance to ward off German invasion, the assassination of Hitler lead to the withdraw of the invasion force. The horrors committed by Italians troops in Ethiopia were leaked to the populace by a small band of rebellious soldiers who mutinied. This started a wave of anti-Mussolini thought in the nation. Giuseppe Messi, a former soldier started a small rebellion group in Southern Italy after being redeployed. Mussolini deployed small groups of men to deal with them but little was accomplished.

1943: With Germany falling the Italians joined in the war by sending in an expeditionary force of three hundred thousand. They liberated northern Yugoslavia and formed several protectorates. Now with the Allies to their West and the Comintern to their East the Italians are pinned between a rock and a hard place. The rebellion was growing, Mussolini passed it off as nothing, but his advisers insisted on intervention. Mussolini planned a purge in Palermo, the suspected head quarters of the rebellion, for the sake of putting his advisers at ease.

Alt-History: In late 1942, Germany was in a bad position. The British advancing in the West, the Soviets in the East, the German government, under the leadership of Hitler's successor Karl Dönitz, fled to Francoist Spain with whatever troops and ships the Wehrmacht had left. After departing, the fleet suffered extremely heavy casualties, as several ships were lost from Allied attacks on the fleet. Even the Tripitz, the last battleship in the German Navy, was listing heavily to port when the German fleet arrived in Santander. The populace of the small town was quite amazed to see German warships arrive in the small port-town.

The Spanish, despite it's heavy Axis leanings, was still technically neutral, so any attack would be violating Spain's sovereignty. The German Fleet, flying Spanish flags, was sailed to Barcelona, frequently stopping due to the poor condition of the German ships. Meanwhile, the Führer, Karl Dönitz, and Chancellor Albert Speer met with Francisco Franco to negotiate a cession of territory to the Reich. After several meetings, Franco caved in and gave Equatorial Guinea to the Nazi government-in-exile.

While the meetings were underway, the fleet was patched up in Barcelona. It made it to Equatorial Guinea and immediately started asserting control of the region. Spanish troops were pulled out of Equatorial Guinea when the Germans arrived. The Nazi government, once it was set up, abandoned the National Socialist Ideology in favor of a more realistic goal- the taking back of the Fatherland. The (mostly unrecognized) Nazi regime has since declared a cessation of hostilities with the Allies in order to focus on domestic matters.
