Religion:
For centuries Spain was devoutly Catholic, it was the 2nd home of the Church. However by the 20th century this began to change. As liberalisation spread across Europe, the ideals of Socialism, Anarchism and Secularism took hold. The industrial and rural workers in most of Spain began to reject the Church. When the republic was declared on 1931, workers took to the streets and began looting churches and convents, seeing them as aristocratic, feudal propaganda. This angered the devout aristocracy and was a leading cause of the Nationalist Revolt.
After the nationalists were crushed, the state continued to take away the church's ill gotten gains. Now all religious institutions receive no public funding and are taxed by the state. Many in government, especially the powerful anarchist CNT vow to dissolve the church.

Ground Force: The commanders and fighters of the Republican army are all veterans of the bitter 1936-1938 civil war and have faced off and beaten the Spanish Army of Africa, the Italian Army and German "volunteers". The navy was small and old. When the Nationalists fled to the canary islands they took a large amount of the old, early 20th century Spanish Navy with them. Since then the Republican Navy has been modernising in to a (small) modern force. The Republic, which was involved in WW2 (only in a small capacity and after 1944) watched the battles in the pacific and Mediterranean eagerly and began building a modern force of cruisers, destroyers, subs and frigates

Assault Guards The Assault Guards were special police units created by the Spanish Republic in 1931 to deal with urban violence. At the start of the Spanish Civil War there were 18,000 Assault Guards. About 16,000 stayed loyal to the Popular Front government, while another 1,000 joined the Nationalists. The Assault Guards then took over the Civil Guards who betrayed the republic in the Civil War and assimilated its members who did not betray the republic in the the Assault Guards
