The canal in France was actually built under the reign of Louis XIV. The expansion would surely not need the same degree of engineering as the Panama Canal since it is not cutting through mountains or swaps or anything like that. The only main issue would be keeping a constant water level throughout the entire canal, which Riquet solved when he built the existing one.

There might be another one though

Looking at river maps, if Bohemia and the NGC could cooperate, it might be possible to connect the Rhine and the Danube, and open up a massive swathe of Central Europe to Atlantic trade.

Edit: Apparently the two rivers were connected IRL in 1992, so it's not that far fetched.
Edit #2: The South German states would also need to be in on the canal-building deal.

Actually, it does cut through a system of mountains but it is nothing like cutting through Panama. The canal uses some locks but the engineering of the time can handle the construction of bigger ones.

Nice. I love these projects, shame they were never completed in RL :(

The issue was more that the NGC is supporting and bankrolling Italian nationalists, and Bohemia is fighting Italian nationalist insurgents in the province of Venice. That might not be conducive to a good relationship between the two nations.

Are it's students doing this publicly? If so, I might try sending a telegram to the NGC's government. The previous RPer asked for warm relations IC, so the Bohemian government might be able to pressure the NGC to reign in it's students.

It's a meeting of the students, no media or politicians attended. I could imagine that some leak the content of the discussion, but all in all it's rather secret. Not because they wouldn't defend what they're doing, but because student fraternities are rather secretive in general.

Edit: Of course the word will spread a bit, at least because most who will want to donate will have to tell their parents about it.

I generally didn't read into not-European things for now, because 5 pages is a lot with the post size we have in NI. It's that German-orientated thngy that South America is in dispute over, if I'm not wrong? I'd appreciate if you could fill me in a bit.

I TGed the player RPing Bulgaria and it seems he is interested in participating in the construction of the canal.

Eh, without reading further into it, I can give you this first answer: With the unification of Germany being a huge topic, it'd be a wrong message to let a culturally German nation down. Nonetheless I could imagine supporting a compromise, especially since it'd be important that South America is balanced.

If TKoG and whoever else got involved with T-L are fine with with it, ok.

I'm opposed tbh. Largely because marrying into the rather prestigious Medici family is much more desirable than some random dynasty that did not actually exist. Keep in mind this dynasty is going to provide my next Queen, and the Dual Kingdom is a rather "ancient" realm in regards to its monarchist traditions relating to family and such.

Just make whatever ICD's last name (or whatever the name he has chosen, maybe it's similar to something I state later) the name of one of the Generals or the Ministers of high importance in the civil government. Surely by 1881, which the amount of republics we have in Europe, democracy has found its way to almost every corner of the continent. I mean my current PM is literally Artur Mas i Gazzara. Artur Mas is the current "president" or whatever of Catalonia and Gazzara is my Sicilian last name. Also if you guys ever noticed, I recycle Kenneth Mackenzie, Earl of Seaforth, all the time as my PM when I am Scotland or Great Britain. Hmm I wonder why. But I'd never imagine making the Mackenzies the ruling House of Scotland or GB, just doesn't make any sense to me.

Should the students actions ever go public, the Dual Kingdom will be making plenty of noise alongside our Bohemian friends, considering the majority of our holdings are "Italian" (even tho Sicilian is largely a different culture from Italian due to its actual cultural base and then added in Catalan influence, people will consider it Italian because of its location).

Also incoming like a tone of responses to shit lmfao

Have you recieved permission from Allen to do so? The Medici's are already in the IC and im married to one of them sooo.

Also that still makes no sense for the tri-color, or T-L's IC activity to date considering they're fighting italian nationalism with me.

Just change Medici to the new house, Not very hard, And they are fighting a power that destroyed the temporal power of the pope with you,

A "power" that overthrew the Papacy in the name of Italian Unification. A "power" that is at the very heart of the Italian Unification movement. Also, a quote from T-L's letter to the DK: As we acknowledge the threat that this rebel Kingdom of Rome poses to the established order in the italian peninsula, and the long-standing friendship between our nations, we would like to extend a hand in your direction and aid you in the fight against this foe. One can assume that this "established order" means the status quo, of which the Tuscan-Lombard King does not wish to see change. The Italian Unification movement changes just that. Therefore, one can safely assume the Tuscan-Lombards are fighting Italian Unification, and therefore nationalism.

Alleniana wrote:Tricolour is a no, indeed. IRL, it was the colours of Milan and its city guard, but there's no reason for that to have happened. And even if there was, T-L is an older, monarchic, probably less nationalistic state that has no reason to go pan-Italian anyway.

Sardinia Piedmont was an Older, Monarchic state and Went full pan-Italian, Your logic does not work.

Considering the Sardinians saw the ability to create a much larger and powerful nation they themselves could rule, of which they would be able to move their older, monarchic state to. I mean their actions were largely so they themselves could gain more power. To deny that is just being foolish, I mean power is the driving force behind most actions in human history.

Yeah, my maternal grandfather's parents come from Sicily. My maternal grandmother's parents come from Bari. Or maybe its Abruzzi. Or maybe its both, I don't remember. But that general area of Italy. I'm actually 50% Italian, mixed in wit ha bunch of Scottish, Irish, English, French, and Native American nonsense from my dad's side. I can ever be considered Canadian, considering my paternal grandfather's father was born in Canada before moving to Massachusetts. But, I digress.
