Boiling cauldrons requires a hue amount of heat, and cauldrons are very expensive to make and have. If you boiled water inside cauldrons, now, there we have a tactic, although water cools down quite rapidly when exposed to air, so it will singe one or two orcs per go.

Would the ports of Forlond and Harlond have been abandoned by the Elves of Lindon? I'm unsure as to how many elves are still living in Lindon and the Grey Havens, considering that most of them were leaving during the War of the Ring and I'm guessing that a change in plan on what to do with the Ring probably wouldn't have changed their decision.

Apparently they're effectively gone; those who remained went to Imladris, and any who remained went to the Havens. You could probably say a hundred or so refused both calls though.
