Yep, that's the debate. I can understand you imagining it that way, but we're discussing if such an imagination is reasonable in the context of the short occupancy of anyone in the city, and the lack of any habitation in the region.

Haha they're not close enough to be an issue initially so you need not worry, but yeah, the bosses sent a company to check out this village.

Yes it would, but it wouldn't be hanging on a wall or out in the open. Besides, no random dude can walk into the lore room of Elrond and start looking around.

If Afrren were to get permission, to brief himself before the Council would he discover that?

I would say no, but sure, make it so that he was walking around and stumbled upon the lore room and read of the Necromancer.

And Elrond gets mad. . . ? But he's in the other room, so that works. Also, Afrren has a sister and a brother. I'll app for his sister later. She'll do something stupid and interupt the council with an uninvited guest.

I'm not certain. The location is noted as a large city, and so I would presume the walls would be around the city, with some form of internal bastion.

It may be important to nota that the Tower of Guard was a fortress turned city, while this would be a city turned fortress. The walls would be around the inner city, with outskirts beyond the walls (abandoned or no) and a citadel in the middle. It wouldn't be as formidable as the Tower of Guard, though.

Quite so. I think the biggest matter for clarification is how big Ost-in-Edhil is, so we can determine if erecting it essentially ex nihilo would create a wooden stockade or a Numenorean fortress. It's at least big enough to house several thousand soldiers in what I presume is a somewhat permanent manner, so larger than most medieval castles by a formidable margin.

I did further research, and it does seem highly unlikely that with Sauron large and in charge that such Orcish power plays would be commonplace while busy subjugating the various free peoples. But with him out of the picture it pretty much is Shadow of Mordor levels of infighting.

Yerp, I mean I can see casual fighting and power plays, but things like murder would be punished if discovered due to the need to maintain a cohesive command structure even at the squad level. A harsh punishment for, say, looting, or perhaps fighting with another unit over spoils, if you want to keep that backstory.

So how's this? Warchief dies in a battle with no clear favorites too replace him and starts a power vacuum. Game of Thrones style orcish political intrigue ensues with all the hilarious good times it entails and my guy is second place (aka first loser) and gets punished brutally and humiliatingly for his 'insolence'. The rest remains basically the same (betray warchief, get revenge, ???, profit). This ok?

Hmm, as long as the power plays are acts to win the favor of their superior, not slaying rivals, that makes sense.

I'm not sure I follow your train of thought? Ost-in-Edhil was destroyed, and then abandoned for four thousand years; it doesn't seem likely that there was much of a structure left to build off of, hence whatever the Elves have done there would be essentially new construction, with maybe some stone salvaged from the pillars of stone mentioned by Tolkien.

IIRC we're five years after the start of the War of the Ring. Plenty of time to build a small keep from scratch with enough labor and infrastructure in place, probably not enough time to build a fortress that holds thousands in what is essentially untamed wilderness.

Character App-
Character name: Lagûrz the Wolf.
Race: Uruk
Appearance: Lagûrz is one of the remaining original 10,000 Uruk-hai bred by Saruman and as such he stands at a height on par with most men and has a heavy powerful upper body. His skin once a dark ebony color has lightened some over the years to a dark grey as he matured more. Lagûrz grows no hair, preferring to shave it off rather than put it into the top knot or dreadlocks of many other orcs and uruks. He has a prominent (for an uruk) nose with large nostrils his eyes are yellow and oval shaped and the shape of his face makes them appear slanted backward. His mouth is only slightly larger than a man's or elf's would be and of course filled with the pointed fang like teeth of all goblinkind and while crooked and yellowed he has so far been thankfully free of the tooth rot and festering ulcers of so many other of his ilk.
History: One of the first of 10,000 Uruk-hai transformed from lesser orc stock by Saruman using fell magics not practiced since Morgoth walked the realms in mortal form Lagûrz was stronger, more cunning, and better trained than the ones that followed afterward; his epitaph 'The Wolf' was earned when it was discovered he could detect the presence of men through smell alone. Like many of the peers ofLurtz, Uglúk, and Lugdush his greater skill and intellect made him a natural fit for leadership in the legions of Isengard and Lagûrz proved himself at Helm's Deep by leading his uruks through the breach cracked into the wall where he personally took half a dozen slaves and killed at least ten men, cementing his captaincy and the fear/respect of his subordinates.
He eventually gained a place in the warg cavalry where he spent the majority of his service to Isengard and Mordor and was the architect of many raids and ambushes perpetrated on the remainder of the Rohinan. When Saruman's legions were diverted elsewhere by order of the Black Hand Lagûrz's unit was also split off to remain in Rohan and made subordinate to one of the lesser uruks from Mordor (a fact that he despised) and soon found himself falling in favor despite his continued habit of scoring victories in the the name of Sauron all because of his 'impure' lineage. In reaction to this Lagûrz showed his dissatisfaction by readopting the White Hand standard of Isengard for his unit and refusing to recruit from the Black Uruks even to where he found he had to begin picking from the lesser orc and goblin stock to keep his numbers up, he also kept his promotions exclusively within the ranks of his own Isengard bread-kin.
Most recently a poisoned wound killed the warchief Skrithûrz the Knife and Lagûrz ceased it as an opportunity to bring back a measure of respect and deference he felt was deserved to him. Over the course of weeks Lagûrz and many other captains of the orc hordes vied for power through various machinations and duels in a bid to be declared the successor of the fallen general. Though it was an uphill battle for him Lagûrz had very nearly attained the coveted place in the command structure of the armies of Sauron when his chief rival, Naga the Shadow, came up with the brilliant ploy of using The Wolf's use of Insengard symbols to convince enough others that Lagûrz was all but a traitor to Sauron along with the rest of Sarumon's legions.
Lagûrz was not just defeated, he was stripped of his rank and his chest was branded with the Eye of Sauron then tied with metal wire to a pole where he is humiliated daily in full view of Naga's camp - this is where his story begins.
Alignment: Himself
Goals: To get revenge and to gain the respect and power he believes is his.
Other:
How active will you be?: Moderate to very.
Did you read everything?: Most of it.

Hmm, a few things.

1) IIRC, gunpowder was never used at Helm's Deep. In this canon the forces there were much smaller, and easily overrun by the forces of Saruman.

2) It doesn't seem that there was a difference made between Uruks and Uruk-Hai of Saruman by Tolkien,

3) Saruman isn't (yet, or necessarily ever) a traitor in the eyes of Sauron, so having him strung up for associating with Saruman's symbols doesn't really make sense.

Perhaps after he was passed over in favor of one of his rivals, Lagurz simply deserted with a portion of the forces that were loyal to him?

Like many of the peers ofLurtz, Uglúk, and Lugdush his greater skill and intellect made him a natural fit for leadership in the legions of Isengard and Lagûrz proved himself at Helm's Deep by leading his uruks through the breach blown into the wall where he personally took half a dozen slaves and killed at least ten men, cementing his captaincy and the fear/respect of his subordinates.
Lagûrz was not just defeated, he was stripped of his rank and his chest was branded with the Eye of Sauron then tied with metal wire to a pole where he is to die in full view of Naga's camp - this is where his story begins.
Alignment: Himself
Goals: To get revenge and to gain the respect and power he believes is his.

1. I'll edit that to broken.

2. I don't think there is a functional difference but there is a cultural rivalry between the Isengard and Mordor Uruks. I was going by things read in the IC and in another App (Delsola's) I just figured Uruk-hai (which would be Orc-men translated from black speech) was a way that Isengard Uruks differentiated themselves.

3. I never meant for that to be actual. Just the reasoning used by Naga and the other Mordor Uruks to justify stringing up Lagûrz. Basically the reason is because screw Isengard, but there is also Delsola's faction The Legion of the White Hand that is sort of in defiance of Sauron's orders too. I can try to write that more clearly?
